Yes it is a shame that most people thing it grey sounding, I bought mine from Radlett Audio in the late 80's.

I've made a few changes the NE5532 stage has be replaced with a home built Naim style gain-stage, this cleared up the one issue that I felt was a problem, and that was the matching of preamp section to the amp!

Also I've found it was very speaker depended to my ears it sounds very good with the ES14.

The main problem is the bass it doesn’t match the quality of the panels.

Hmm,. a quality sub would sort the bass out I reckon. I've heard PPS-1's for myself and their imaging capabilities are quite startling... ;)

You've obviously got taste, Sharif. Not only the Intek, but also the AU101, the first hifi amp I ever owned and the Wharfedale loudpanels, which I also owned at one time :) As far as I remember the loudpanels aren't that great at sharp imaging, but, rather than having a sweetspot they sound pretty good way off axis. Obviously being flat they don't sound boxy and transients are pretty good too.

I wasn’t expecting much but the panels have a very un-coloured sound and as you say are quite startling.
The sub needs some serious rework the last time I heard one note bass was in the local nightclub.
What would be a good sub to use?

Anything from REL's range springs to mind or if you are on a budget Yamaha have produced some capable but good value subs over the years. ;)

I've now had a little listen to my refurbished QC22 and it sounds very good in between my CD player and amp.

So far it appear to be very neutral with a good portrait of tone detail and dynamics.
Each part of the mix was clearly identifiable with poor quality recordings ruthlessly exposed.

Also QC22 preamp added no noise with the inputs disconnected and volume control at maximum, there was no hiss or hum.
To my cloth ears it added nothing to the sound other than gain and to me was indistinguishable from the direct
CD player connection, I will need to have a longer listen.

Time to dig out the Quad II's these haven’t seen daylight for 15 years, this was on the wife's orders when the kids were small.

I've owned these amplifies since 1980 they only have one previous owner, not sure if it makes any difference,
I was told when I bought that they were a closely match pair with only three number between the serial numbers.

Best value subs I think are BK especially as they are available direct. I picked up a BK XLS200 II recently and can recommend this, either new or used.

I'm looking forward to listening to my Quad's I need to do a few check under the bonnets to make sure everything is okay.
For now I'm frantically trying to find the mains leads and the Jones plug to phono plug adapters.

Thanks for the tip for the sub I also heard they are good and I’ll added to my list.

Something to note my pair of Quad II are not standard.

It's been thirty years since I've used a QC 22 preamp with my Quad II's all that I can say is that I'm very pleased with the results.
The mods that I've done to the QC 22 have transformed it to a very natural and revealing sounding preamp, gone is the soft warm bass and the mushy valve sound.

I have been listening to a number of live recordings made on my Tascam DR40 these have highlighted how poorly produce most modern recording are.

Love the Quad IIs!
Curious to know what's non-standard about them?

Look closer and you will see no GZ32 or GZ34, these have a modified psu which cleaned up the bass and also improved the detail and dynamics.

It is a very simple arrangement and all HT voltages remain the same.

The GZ32, GZ34 has been replaced with a plugin module with two power resistor and two diodes, also the 16+16uF have been replaced with a 220uF and a 47Uf capacitor.

The two resistor are place on the AC side of the HT before the two diodes, by having the resistors on the AC side dampens the the switching pluses generated by the diodes.

A slow start-up circuit inside the case to protect the transformers HT and the valves, which also means the GZ34 will still work.
