Red Nipples On Vacuum Tubes

I have some Russian OTKs and have just seen some Tesla E88CCs with red painted nipples.

Does this actually mean anything that was consistent between manufacturers? Or if not, any info on a particular manufacturer would be cool.

Manufacturers would often mark those selected samples of the E88CC, reserved for post and telecommunications organisations, by painting the glass vacuum seal at the top; which I assume is what you mean by "nipple".

There probably is a "more correct" term than nipple but it seems intuitive and mildly amusing.

Interesting. I was kind of thinking it may have meant they were duff/rejects or something of that nature.
