Recommend me a DAC for a TEAC VRDS 25x

For that kind of money I would suggest that you give the BMII with a battery pack a try at least. Imagine what you could do with the left over change if it hits the critical spot.

The machine you have was pretty darned good wasn't it, so what's the matter with it? The Beresford, which was supposedly a huge improvement over the previous Caiman, has just had yet another 'massive improvement' I read elsewhere, albeit for a 'mere' tenner or so, so I don't know how similar or different this may be to what you already own :scratch:

If you're using the now rather relentless ATC 50 SLA's, then my suggestion for DAC given your budget, is probably the Benchmark in all honesty as it's claimed to have no 'sound' at all as it is and gives you precisely what goes in, and experience of ATC's of all types is that they don't like the added colourations of audiophool products and will magnify harshness and added warmth/compression, now they're brighter toned since the SL mods came along in the 50's some years ago now.

I know you like to fiddle and mess around with your 'stuff' but before you add anything to the main system, I wonder if one day, you'd take the power conditioning out and many of the fancy wires and see what the 'vanila' system sounds like, just to be sure all this money you've spent on add-ons really helped things?

Wise words. Im not quite sure what you mean when you say the ATC's are relentless. They are pretty ruthless are showing up shit recordings if thats what you mean. I love to fiddle and mess, it's what keeps my interest in the hobby. Now, with regards the cabling, I'm afraid it's all homemade stuff, nothing fancy. And with regards the power conditing, I had Isotek (hated it). My feelings are well known on the forum about it. I bought a P10 and the system improved. The "vanilla" system sounds fantastic thanks. The system I have now sounds even better. I don't listen to that many CD's but I thought a DAC may well improve on what I already have.

Knocks anything else (up to Audio Research kit) I've ever heard into a cocked hat! I only slightly exaggerate when I say that the first thing I do every morning is kick myself that I got rid of my set as a part ex for an albeit excellent TT!

Before I bought my Chord QBD76 DAC, I had the opportunity to compare side by side against Naim DAC and PS Audio PerfectWave DAC. I very much preferred the Chord but I friend of mine who was with me preferred the Naim. Quite different presentations, the three of them.

A couple of thousand, it would have to be my own DAC. Whilst I haven't heard an Audio Note 4.1 Sig have been told that I have nothing to worry. Pedja Rogic used to be very active on the DIYAudio forums, our own Leo was a fan of his AYA DAC but the Audial Model S is in a different league to anything I've heard.

IMHO you can spend thousands and get a lot more than casework. Most of my case is taken up with 2x potted transformers, a huge power supply and output transformers. As it's sold direct £2k is astonishing value with the likes of Zandens, and Audio Notes, AMR etc. costing a lot more as they do have bling, marketing and dealer markups.

I have used the Beresford Bushmaster Mk1 and Mk2, which are great DACs and put a lot of expensive gear to shame, but not a match for the natural timbre, dynamic contrast and deeper, more 3D soundstage of the Audial DAC.
