Stan kindly sent me a new chip for the BM2 to try. This implements a commissioned personalized software modification primarily written for battery users. It is not suitable for the BM1.

It only arrived yesterday so I have only had a limited opportunity to assess it. The first thing I noticed was how much smoother and airy the presentation is. Frequency response sounds totally flat right across the spectrum - I previously commented that one of the pluses of the BM2 was it had no sonic signature - this aspect is even more pronounced with this mod if that makes sense? There seems more space around individual instruments/voices which well up from an uber quiet low noise floor - sounds like it was recorded in the dark!

As the amps warmed up the bass just got deeper and deeper but not at the expense of other frequencies. It sounds even more analogue than before. I hesitate to use the phrase but it sounds "dry" but this is a good dry not a bad dry!

I am guessing that these differences are down to even better noise filtering that's possible using a high capacity battery but I'm sure Stan will tell me I'm talking bollocks.

Anyway, FWIW I like what it does even more than the standard BM2 and that's saying something.

Thanks Stan £10 well spent.

Stephen,
Is it straight forward to swap the chip over ?
I would be interested in giving this a go in my battery set up.

Yes - piece of cake - take cover off - lift out old chip - drop in new one - replace cover - 10 minutes - simples!

Just a quick update around the mod
The music seems to have a bit more texture, moving more towards what my turntable does. As Stephen says giving it a bit more of analogue sound, however I do find it dry. It certainly worth the small amount of beer money

Just got mine installed. Initial impressions echo Johns description.....more texture, the granular nature of voices is more apparent. Sound is even more unforced and separated. As Stephen mentioned the noise floor is even lower. I was expecting just a subtle difference but it is a very noticeable improvement across the board.

Had mine a couple of weeks, this is part of the email i sent to Stan...............

Hi Stan,

Just had a listen to Bryan Ferry's 'Smoke gets in your eyes'. - Vocals sound less sibilant.
Cat Stevens 'Morning has broken'. - Intro piano sounds clearer and more controlled.
Jimi Hendrix '1983 a merman i should be'. - More controlled and slightly deeper bass.
There is some delicate cymbal and drum work on this track, it sounds clearer.
instrument separation is slightly better, the soundstage seems wider on all tracks, especially on the Hendrix track.

Would the chip mod bring any improvement to the standard DC-powered BM2 ?
The mod is designed to take advantage of the lower noise floor that you get from using a battery as a power source. I am really pushing the development of additional information extraction that the cleaner power from battery use is bringing to the table. We are crossing the boundaries of what was previously technically possible as far as DAC reproduction is concerned. I don't want to promise that it will also make the DAC sound better on mains, when I myself can't hear an obvious difference in each and every listening test with the DAC powered by a linear or the standard power supply. The mains in my area is super noisy at times which I have put down to the fact that it is on the same sub station as the local industrial and trading estate. So I have to be cautious that I am not getting tricked into believing that the mod works for the standard PSU as well due to false positives.

I am working on an alternative FW however that is crammed with various code routines to improve the sound of various power sources and audio sources that are connected to the BMII. So that will be suitable for battery, linear PSU, and SMPS. Those that have contributed towards the development costs of the battery FW will get a free upgrade to the next version if they so wish, for the cost of the P&P.

At the same time I am doing some tests with the same codes to get them to work on the BM MKI as well. Unfortunately the MKI and MKII use two different types of chips, and they are not interchangeable. Worse still, I can get a lot more out of the MKI compared to stock, but that requires some mods to the PCB. I have found one willing victim who is prepared to send his MKI to me so that I can install the mods and then evaluate the end result. So stay tuned.

Chips arrived and I switched them over. I have two bushmaster II's. Sound is frigg'n amazing. So clear. Dialogue and lyrics are perfect. Even in my living room, which is fairly lively and less than ideal for audio, the sounds are now all there top to bottom with NOTHING missing. In the bedroom setup, which is much better, as the bed cuts down on the reflections, well all I can say is that it is SCARY good! Tom Jones, Yo Yo Ma, Ute Lemper, Mark Knopfler, Johnny Cash, Camille O'Sullivan - all now sound present enough to reach out and touch. Whisper sounds that were missing before, drums and cymbals, brush sounds. Room decay and reverb, all there. Miles Davis cuts through the air. Orchestra instruments all distinct. And soundtracks!!!! WOW! Lows vibrate the bed without any bloat or boom. Complex mixes clear and distinct. And I thought the Bushmaster MK II was amazing before!!! Don't know what magic wand Stan is waving, but H. Potter should turn green with envy.

Stan, wasn't the whole point of much of the redesign to make the thing immune from mains supply issues? I'm really confused that you now think a battery supply is better when the special circuit you developed is supposed to eliminate this sort of thing

Posted in a different thread some screen grabs from my scope that showed the noise attenuation at the output pins of the regulators. Some shots were of the BMII fed from a SMPS, a Linear PSU, or a 12V battery. The battery was still the best performer noise wise.

I think it would be asking a lot for the BM2 to have built-in power management that could handle any and all noise that can come from mains power. I'm OK with Stanley having made improvements to the BM2 in that regard, while in the same breath admitting that those improvements can't compete with a clean, battery source of DC power. There are power conditioners out there selling for many times the price of the BM2 - and all they do is re-manufacture the power.

I received and installed the new firmware ROM into my BM MkII last Friday and have been listening all weekend. I can honestly say, that for the first time, digital now sounds as satisfying to me in my system as vinyl. I played Agnes Obel's Philharmonics (FLAC rip from CD) last night and it sounded sublime. Normally, when I enjoy something digital that I haven't got on vinyl, I check to see if the vinyl is available - this time I haven't bothered.

So since I started this thread I have been enjoying what the latest Stan mod does exclusively via Croft 25R/S4s into my Epos M22i speakers with a variety of digital sources - I'm pleased that others have posted very similar findings to what my ears have told me. :)

Well folks I am hear to tell you that it can be even better than this :stalks:

If you think it's good through amp and speakers just wait until you hear what it does to your headphones

I've been listening tonight purely with my Grado GS1000's using a Macbook Air with HiFace 2 and I have to tell you I am blown away. All the improvements mentioned in previous posts and then some more. I have never ever heard Rodrigo y Gabriela or Einaudi sound like this - I am running out of superlatives. PRaT like you won't believe, ridiculous deep and controlled bass, detail never heard before - just the biggest silly grin :yay:

If you have not tried the BM2 mod with headphones yet then drop everything and plug in your cans. If you have no cans then beg, borrow or steal a pair. :trust:

As an aside to the topic the Hiface 2 is a gem. I am now uber lazy and just lying back on the sofa headphones on and controlling everything from the Macbook with my HTC one with a neat little android app called retune

I'm with you Steve!

The Bushmaster MkII's headphone out is great with all but the more inefficient headphones.

There are certainly a lot of phones it could no doubt drive well. I have listened to the Bushmaster MkII extensively with the Sennheiser HD800, HD650, HD600, HD280 Pro and Amperior, the Audeze LCD-2 rev.1, the Beyerdynamic DT1350, and Audio Technica ATH-M50, as well as a soon-to-be-released, flagship headphone I've been Beta testing for three months, through multiple prototypes, that I'm not at liberty to reveal.

In my opinion, with my tastes, my ears... for this short list of possibilities... none is a better fit to the Bushmaster MkII than the Sennheiser HD650. And I've never heard the HD650 sound better on any other DAC/amp, including amps with a lot more power. This is an awesome pairing.

My second choice for the Bushmaster MkII headphone out (among this list of headphones) is the Audeze LCD-2 rev.1 - remarkable, considering that Audeze recommends a minimum of 1W rms per channel. It's true that the Bushmaster MkII isn't powerful enough to give the LCD-2 all the bass control it needs, but the dynamics are still remarkable. The LCD-2 sounds really, really good on the Bushmaster MkII, despite sounding better still when using the Bushmaster MkII's analog outputs to a more powerful headphone amp (good luck finding one that's sufficiently transparent and neutral to be worthy of the MkII's DAC section.) But overall, the HD650 is a better match to the MkII's headphone out.

Hi Mike
One of the beauties of the BM/BM2 and Stan's stunning after-sales support is that he can "setup" the DAC depending on the headphones to be used so before mine arrived it was optimized for my Grado GS1000's - the new mod just makes them sound even better. I also have a pair of Beyerdynamic DT990 - 600 ohm cans and while I've not tried them with the new mod they sounded too thin with the BM2 before - and really needed the added oomph from my SOHA II hybrid head amp.

Had a good listen to the 650s last night......best I have heard them yet. The most noticeable thing about the mod is the way that it separates out vocals-tracks I know really well are revealing backing vocals or double/triple tracking I hadn't been aware of. Sat up to the wee small hours this morning just enjoying my favourite tunes heard afresh. Wonderful !!!

I was up until after 3am listening to some live Bob Marley tracks, some Jeff Healey, and a couple of tracks off Free Live. All through a pair of AKG K550 headphones.
It never fails to amaze me at the previously unheard detail the Bushmaster (with new FW and battery powered) draws out of the recordings.

It's not an exaggeration to say that the Bushmaster has given my music collection a new lease of life.:)

I have also enjoying the benefits of the BM2 and new chip for several weeks now (I run the Anker battery on my setup).

Just one question for fellow HD650 users - one thing I find slightly disconcerting is that often I find that I can only use less than the first quarter of the the BM2 Volume Control ?

I run a Squeezebox Touch with the EDO mod which fixes the Volume at 100% (which I guess maybe partly to blame). However, I used the EDO mod with my old BM1 and that had more of the Volume Control available to use. BTW I also know the BM2 has a log type volume control compared to the linear type on the BM1.

Furthermore, the majority of my music is fairly quietly mastered. I spend a lot of time scouring the Steve Hoffman website for tips on the best (and quietest) masterings. I suppose I have an extreme alergic reaction to brickwall mastering - consequently most of favourite ripped CDs date from the 80s and 90s before the Loudness Wars kicked in.

I am worried that with so little travel on the Volume Control I am not getting the most out of the BM2. I read that the first few millimetres of the volume control are used for setting the balance.

Don't get me wrong I love the sound of the HD650 with the BM2 but I suppose psychologically I would be happier with a volume dial at least above a quarter to the hour !

How do you other guys find the the volume control with HD650s ?

I run mine between 11 o clock and 1 o clock. Have you tried removing the foam inserts in the 650s I found this really cleaned up the sound without any harshness. I run all my speakers without grills for the same reason. You could the BM 2 with CD transport and see where the level sits..

20-03-2014, 17:31
Hi Tony - Crikey 11 to 1 o'clock I never get anywhere near that. Although I did play an 80s CD the other week and managed to get slightly above a quarter to the hour (sounded bloody good too - really enjoyed it - people shouldn't knock those old CDs).

I haven't removed the foam from my HD650s to be honest I prefer a warmer sound anyway and I can't imagine it would affect the volume much.

I have wondered about trying my Pioneer Stable Platter CD Transport - I may give it a go tonight. I take it you use CD as a source do you - I know 2v is the average CD output. I wonder what voltage SBT runs at on 100% volume?

Trouble is I don't really want to go back to CD. I keep the Pioneer and Laura Ashley cabinet in the lounge full of CDs as an emergency backup in case my internet connection fails. I just love the convenience of loafing on the sofa with my Tablet browsing my 5000+ album collection to play on the SBT !

I just did some searching on the web for the voltage level of the Squeezebox - the comments on this thread by John Swenson suggest the SBT should be about the same as a normal CD player at 100% volume :-

http://forums.slimdevices.com/archive/index.php/t-81343.html

...anyway I'll try the CD player later tonight after the family have gone to bed and the house falls silent for me to focus on the sound.

I often wonder about all the comments on the web about how over rich the bass is on the HD650 (and how they are veiled etc). I have never found this to be true with my pair of HD650s which I was lucky enough to win in a Hi-Fi forum competition around 2006. I also believe the HD650s were modified by Sennheiser around this time and mine are the later model. I have always assumed the later model is more neutral and a lot of the adverse comments on the web about the HD650 are based on the earlier model.

I run my HD650 at 1 o'clock, with the BM2, like wee tee cee. The only way you could reduce the volume coming into the BM2 would be to reduce the bit depth - which is best not done with 16-bit recordings, as it reduces dynamics, but can be done sparingly with 24-bit recordings.

What I don't understand about your situation, assuming your HD650 is no more efficient than ours and that the output of your BM2 is no more powerful, is how your incoming digital signal from the Squeezebox could cause any increase in SPL at the headphones, more so than the 100% bit depth delivered by any other digital source, via coaxial or optical input.

I know that some DACs output more or less than a 2V rms analog signal into an integrated amp, which can certainly make a difference in where you set the amp's volume control, but here, we're talking about all of using the same DAC and amp - the BM2.

I'm stumped, except to conclude your headphones must be different from ours.

Yes, I don't hear anything in the way of a "veil" with the current versions of the HD600 and HD650, but I've never heard any of the earlier models. I find mine to be completely transparent. Here's a great article, by Tyll Hertsens, on the history and the differences:

The Very Important Sennheiser HD 580, HD 600, and HD 650 (http://www.innerfidelity.com/content/very-important-sennheiser-hd-580-hd-600-and-hd-650)

Looking at his Frequency Response graphs, on the last page (http://www.innerfidelity.com/content/very-important-sennheiser-hd-580-hd-600-and-hd-650-measurements), comparing the HD600 to the HD650, you can see the additional bass of the HD650.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for all - of course you are right - I was forgetting the 2vrms figure quoted for CD players etc is the analogue output level.

The stuff coming into the BM2 is digital so I suppose the Touch at 100% is the same as any normal CD Player (without a volume control). I am suspicious of the possible negative effects of using the Touch Volume Control so would prefer it to stay at 100%.

So it is a mystery - I know I don't like loud compressed music but even so I never get anywhere close to 1 o'clock on the volume control with my HD650s (in fact very rarely am I at 11 o clock - except for very quiet early 80s CDs).

Maybe I just have very sensitive ears !!

Stan - if you are reading this - did you do anything to boost the power of my BM2 Headphone Amp? I remember when I originally ordered the BM1 you kindly did a mod to it for the HD650. However, when I ordered the BM2 I had forgotten all about that and so assumed my BM2 was a standard issue one.

From my message to Stan after the firmware upgrade: I’m hearing more soundstage and more fine detail retrieval in both 16/44 and hi-res formats. The new firmware seems to benefit both Sky HD and Touch. Edge definition and attack are enhanced. Depth and hear-through are definitely better. Touch has probably benefitted best from the upgrade, 16/44 CD least. I'm listening to Radio Paradise on the Touch (hi-res stream) and it sounds excellent, very close to CD as a source into the BM2. Sky HD sound on some Sky Arts programming is superb.

Touch & BM2 battery powered, Touch via co-ax, Sky HD via optical.

Hello all,
I purchased this week a used Bushmaster mkII ... The seller purchased it in the beginning of march....My question is: is the new mod included in this purchase ? I am astounded by the sound , and thanks to Mr Beresford, for a price ridiculously low, new or used, anybody could benefit of this audiophile sound ..... I want to experiment with the new mod, the new firmware ROM, but i dont know if this was implemented automatically in the model purchased by the first owner in the first week of march........i forget to mention that i have the Ankaka battery charger with it.....
if not already implemented i want this mod..... the Beresford is for me the most extraordinary dac combo ever for the price.. I want this mod ....On the site "Beresford.me" i have not see this product in the section "upgrade"... Perhaps this mod is new? where do we purchase it?

The new mod definitely provides an additional level of clarity and a little more subtlety too. Watched, or should I say listened to Ep 1 of Jamaica Inn and could here everything, even a soft coat being put down over the back of a chair. The dialogue seemed natural, but I can understand those with poor TV sound having a bit of trouble. Onto episode 2 and someone had certainly made some changes! The dialogue track was much higher than previously and quite a bit of presence seemed to have been added, perhaps too much, giving the speech quite a hard bite.

Anyway the BM2 with the upgrade certainly lets us hear what is going on!

Thank you John, i have email to Mr. Beresford, he emails me back in 24 hours time, and send me the mod for the battery charger users... I amazed already of the sound without the mod... I cannot imagine how this will possibly go better.... I will write my impression here soon.. thanks to all....

I listen now the bushmaster mk II rev.4 with the mod....I am amazed by the sound improvement.... i want to thanks Mr. Beresford for his dedication ... There is no comparison before the mod and after... For 20 dollars i have more than i have ever imagined possible.... Mr. Beresford is more interested by the satisfaction of his customers than by money.... Its clear for me, thanks sincerely for my joy....
