I saved up for a new Pioneer SX-450 in 1977 - my first proper bit of HiFi. Even if it sounds crap, it's a lovely thing to see and touch. Likewise the Pl-71, of course!

What speakers are you running with this? Hopefully something suitable huge and teak clad?

Sorry to disappoint, but the speakers are modern Avalon NP2.0s. I think the SX-450 might faint at the sight of my Quad 57s. Also, these two won't be staying on the lovely sideboard (early 1960s by Richard Hornby for Fyne Ladye Furniture).

Your sideboard looks a lot like the radiogram that my parents cherished for nearly forty years - a lovely piece of furniture, with a very high gloss finish, but its audio qualities left a lot to be desired.

I often wonder how much damage the old Garrard autochanger did to their record collection, having a huge cast alloy tone arm with a tracking weight of about three pounds! :)

I do like the old Pioneer receiver though. It looks like new.

And have you seen the price of them now? There is a clear parallel between buying classic 20th century furniture and classic 20th century audio - buy carefully and you are unlikely to lose money. But you know that, of course!

I'm waiting for some cheapo Van Damme speaker cable to arrive so that I can try the SX-450 in my office system. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it holds its own against the Quad 34/306/FM4. The Quad 34 is a lovely thing to see and use, but (even after a full Quad service) it is not exactly a vibrant performer, and rather holds the FM4 and 306 back.

Don't get carried away with the receiver PLEASE!

The PL71 definitely deserves a good home and modern cartridge, but the beautifully engineered receiver has a heart of crossover distortion and shedloads of global feedback from memory, so don't expect a walk-in soundstage ;) Enjoy it for its tactile qualities, but Luxman, Harman Kardon and Yamaha (CR400, CR600 etc.. pre the *20 series) it ain't I'm afraid.

Calm down! The SX-450 is destined for my office system, playing a mix of Radio 2 Pop Master and Radio 4, so nothing very taxing. It certainly does have tactile qualities - they knew about proper knob-feel in those days!

Agreed - so easy to fall into the 'comparison trap' which often just ends up in tears. Been there, done that, and I'd be lying if it didn't rear its ugly head on occasion now.

I'm still using an 18" CRT TV, though it doesn't look quite as '70s as that.

Nowt wrong with that.. some CRT's have excellent picture quality. You just need to know how to tweek em.

But if you want the real feel of the 70's (or at least a part of it) you need to turn your power off at 8 o'clock... was it 8?

I'll find it out but i think i mentioned a while back that i have a late 60's Sony 'Trinitron' TV.. You know what it's like when yer an era magpie..

That's a fair description of the SX-450's sound; however it's probably a bit tired inside and I may do a bit of servicing with new electrolytic caps etc. It's such a nice thing to look at and operate that I can forgive it for sounding quite average. Part of me is wondering if it's possible to replace the power amp section with some Hypex modules, just for fun!
