The path of a music lover is not an easy one

Hi All

Addicted to music and hifi from my teens I have seen a lot of changes of kit. I got myself on the Naim and Linn ladder and ended up with what I thought I wanted which was active SBLs and a pimped Linn deck. On reaching these heights I decided I had enjoyed the journey but the arrival just didn't do it for me. Sold the lot including all my vinyl which I sort of now regret, the vinyl bit anyway. After a brief dalliance with active AVI speakers I have been on another journey of trying out all the stuff I have ever fancied and some more.

I have a large digital collection on hard drive and CD and am going through a retro phase of wanting to play physical material rather than summon it up on an iPad. To this end I bought a Wadia 381i and am currently enjoying it very much. Having recently been to a bake off where vinyl was the only medium being used and feeling like a bit of an outcast I am now pondering whether I ought to dip my toes back into the vinyl pond!

Any suggestions?

I have had the same addiction since my teens and went from vinyl/valves to Digital /SS and now back to vinyl. I have listened to digital for the last 25 years and recently heard systems which are at the cutting edge of digital with DSD and 24bit recordings. However recently I spent a day in London with a dealer friend of mine and listened to some amps which I was going to buy. We spent most of the day listening to CD with the amps on a using a very high end player. At the end of the day I suggested maybe just to listen to some vinyl using the same amps. It was like being born again. From that day I was so gob smacked I never touched a CD or digital recording again. I regret having wasted 25 years messing around with digital trying to make it sound listenable. My vinyl system is a revelation and has vastly increased my enjoyment listening to music - which its all about:)

Hi Mike and welcome to AoS. The pros of vinyl are probably known to you - when it's right it really is the best medium IMO, and I think you get more back from the extra effort that you put in. On the other side of the argument, it can be expensive and frustrating if occasional pops and clicks are unacceptable to your ears.

I would say go for it, get yourself a nice tube amp and some decent vinyl pressings, light your pipe, don the slippers and time-warp back to the days before the aberration that is rap and autotune polluted the world of music ;)

You have the right name so you're already on the right track

I want the best sound quality I can get for sensible dough. AoS is a good place to find that.

I had similar to you Linn and Naim, still have Isobariks
Hearing Martin T's system showed how incredibly far off I was so I started upgrading
System is now wonderful, see below.
Being efficient (lazy) I'd prefer to click and listen but the best results come from vinyl.
If you are serious about the very best quality it has to be vinyl.
