View Full Version : Pioneer DV737 in need of a little love...
A while back I took a punt on one of these players but unfortunately it is just about unusable due to a couple of issues. Firstly the drive tray returns back into the machine when ejected and also when playing disks it sounds as if there is a teeny, tiny saw mill going at it full chat inside the cabinet. These problems are beyond my skill to fix so I was wondering if some kind person could look at it for me to see what might be needed to return it to functionality? If you choose to accept this mission please PM me.... This tape will self-destruct in five seconds... :D
That'd be affecting the sound quality too. Sorry I can't help to fix, but I do have 4x 717s (same player without better video) that I could dig out when am doing my next project in which case I'd be happy to send it. Alternatively I have an unused working DV-505 (tad less refined than the 717/737 that you could try to see if you like the sound!).
Gut feeling is it has issues with the servo and transport, but replacing / repairing would cost the same as a fully working one from eBay. Having said this when I've had issues with the Pioneers it's down to capacitors rather than outright replacement of mechanisms…!
It does play then despite making this noise? I shall do some research...
Does it make the noise with all types of disc? Cd and dvd for instance.
It sounds as if the laser isn't tracking right which would be a case of adjusting a variable resistor to get it back in the right spot.
If that is the case it may also point to the cause of the tray issue as well.
If one vr is out of whack then it may be that two are.
It does play and sounds pretty good too, although it is not a patch on my Arcam CD72. Plenty of peeps have mentioned that it should be bettering the Arcam significantly so it does sound as if all is not well. When playing it will randomly skip as if the disk is dirty or scratched, even on CD's which are flawless, it will also occasionally fail to read a CD.

I would be most grateful if you could spare a 717 Neil. Let me know nearer the time and we can discuss monies... ;)

That's interesting Andrew although I wouldn't have the faintest idea what to adjust, I think I'd rather leave this to someone who knows what they are doing as I have a propensity to kill stuff when I attempt to fix it...
Have you put a dvd in and does it make the same or any noise? Trying to diagnose this before I hazard a guess as to whether or not I can fix it Dave.
As a side note, what colour is it?

When it skips does it skip forward or back ?
As a side note, what colour is it?
I believe the purple ones are particularly troublesome.
Marco.

It's packed away just now, I will dig it out tomorrow and try it with a DVD... ;)

Forwards I think James, again I will try this again when I have dug it out tomorrow... :)

Good one. I sense a potential addition to my stable Marco hence my question.

Champagne gold Andrew ;)

Oh baby!
Oh dear, have you had a little accident Andrew??? :D

Now you can see why I am keen to get it working. Incidentally the remote control is awesome, it has a button on the side of it which illuminates key function keys in red so one can use it in the dark... ;)

As an aside, I use a Pioneer DV-717 DVD player as a CD transport - truly excellent!

What's the Pioneer like Dave compared to the Arcam used as a transport? Or have you not had a chance to try it previously?

Your best asking someone who has a properly working example as mine has had these problems ever since it arrived here, sorry Paul. Others have told me that when working properly it should kick the Arcam CD72 into a cocked hat as a transport and that is no mean feat as the Arcam is an excellent performer...
Nicely priced too, I've added half a dozen to my list of champers delights on an auction site.
Seems a straightforward enough fix so hopefully someone nearer can tweak your pots.

I assume you've tried shouting at it ? Maybe a gentle yet persuasive "thwack" on the lid ? :D
If tomorrow when you test it again it skips forward then I would guess some part of the servo/transport is out of kilter as Andrew says... FWIW, skipping backwards like a stuck record IME indicates the sled rails need cleaning as the factory lube can go tacky impeding the laser's progress whilst reading.
I had a DV-717 years ago that flat refused to read CD's unless placed vertically on its side.. DVD's worked perfectly. Go figure

Oh of course, I gave it a damn good telling off and sent it to bed without any tea... :D

When I have got over my debilitating bout of Lazyitis I will attempt to pull it apart to remove its gizzard, upon which I shall clean it thoroughly and replace it with skill and precision, that'll learn it....
Did you mention earlier that you had cleaned the lens? If so did you mean you'd spun a "lens cleaner" disc?
While you've got the top off give the lens a gentle clean with a spot of alcohol or similar (lighter fluid does the job for me) on a cotton bud or soft cloth.

Nope I have not cleaned the lens as yet and would never entrust my disk spinners to a lens cleaning gadget, Q-Tips and Mr Muscle window cleaner FTW. There's a really kinky plot for a porno movie in there somewhere... hehe
record cleaner works as well....honest
I might add that they all seem to suffer from tray itus, but I find that leaving a cd in the drawer reduces this quite a bit. been meaning to open one and see if it has a small tray belt like the nads that suffer the same problem.... as for the noise , it could be a dry guide as well.
I currently have the bonnet off this unit and inside was pretty much a mess. Dust everywhere, much of it clinging to crucial parts of the transport mechanism which explains its reluctance to work reliably. The carriage rails for the laser assembly were caked in black, semi-solid gloop consisting of old lubricant and dust. The original colour of the lubricant is white as I found a little lurking nervously at the extremities of each rail. All is now clean, including the lens, and I have re-lubed the rails with graphite from a soft pencil. The insides now look as good as new.

Firing it up after a mornings work reveals a working DV737, although the deep clean did not solve all the issues I reported. The draw extends and retracts more reliably now however it does still dive back inside the unit very, very occasionally but I can live with that. The noise from the spindle rotor however is somewhat epic, it sounds like metal to metal contact although I've not had this section apart yet to investigate, thought it'd be wise to ask whether there is anything I should be careful of before carrying on, knowing how ham-fisted I can be...

I have the same unit and it too occasionally does the drawer returning just as you're putting a disc in thing ....
Any simple fixes for this does anyone know?

T'is exactly what mine does Stu, it's as if there is a photo-electric cell inside the draw which detects hand movements upon which it drags the draw back inside. Maybe there is as the draw itself is very flimsy, perhaps it is to avert accidental damage?

Well it catches me unaware from time to time - you go to get the disc in the drawer just as it decides to close and the CD ends up getting trapped in the mechanism. Will do some research and see if there's a fix.

Q: "my pioneer dv600av-s tray will close almost immediately whenever i open the tray it closes on its own even before i have a chance to insert the disc
A:I have run across this the odd time, this is caused by a stretched loading belt, the reason why it opens and closes is it cannot complete the cycle to open because the belt is slipping, replacing the belt will cure this problem. "
Different player but same problem. Anyone competent who tries to replace the belt will you take pictures please.

A deep clean seems to have lessened the frequency of the issue Stu. To the rear left of the tray is a spring-loaded tab which may be part of the mechanism which recognises when the draw is fully extended, I will investigate further shortly ;)

A short term option might be to apply talc to the belt very sparingly, depending on how far gone it is of course...
Okay, service complete and the DV737 is now sitting in the system playing Sting's Live In Berlin album and sounding pretty good. Sadly this player possesses a cheap and cheerful mech which is where the problems lie, which is a shame as the rest of the unit is of reasonable quality. The plastic locating disk' is what was responsible for the loud rubbing noise, when a disk is loaded the top surface of the locating disk is pressed against the metal structure it is attached to so I smeared a very thin film of light hair clipper oil over the top surface of the locating disk so now there is only a gentle 'swish' instead, and you virtually need to put your ear to the unit to hear it. It will stay in the system for around a week and I'll decide whether I am going to keep it or not by next weekend. I will put it up for sale if not ;)

Good job
If you do decide to move it on dont give up on the Jap DVD players. Give a DVP-S7700 a go, its a very different kettle of fish to the usual Pioneer & Denon suspects... Around the same price too ;)

Thanks James, I'll take some pics of it in the system tomorrow when I've got some decent light. Despite its slightly suspect nature of the mech quality I must say it is sounding lovely. It's different in in its presentation compared to the CD72 although I think the Arcam just about edges it. I'm quite surprised how close these two are in performance terms to be honest as the mech in the Arcam is much more solidly built plus the Arcam saw fit to install six separate power supplies in the CD72 whereas there is only one in the DV737...

Glad you got it up and running Dave. Quite close in performance to the Arcam also? :eyebrows:. Very interesting...

That's as a transport Paul, I've yet to hook it up directly, something I shall try tomorrow as a Pioneer stable platter unit I had here a while ago sounded a bit 'meh' through the Rega but hooked up to the DR5 via IC's it sounded awesome ;)
