Speed out of control on my Techie

OK, its time to ask for some help here. One of my turntables is speeding out of control. It was pulled over and got a speeding ticket as a result. :eyebrows::eyebrows::eyebrows:

As soon as I power up my turntable, it speeds up, perhaps to 200 RPM without hitting the start button. Both the 33 and 45 RPM lights are on as a result. I tried changing the IC AN6680 but it was all in vein.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to relieve this situation? I love my TTs and want to see them back to its pristine operating order.

Hello there,
Runaway speed is usually a sign of no speed feedback from the rotor to the control circuit.

Check for dry solder joints on the motor PCB where the tacho coil connects to the board (common on SP-15s :rolleyes:), and inspect the tacho coil itself. The coil is available as a standard spare (from Connect Audio amongst others. No affiliation, that's just where I saw it).

If you have a collection of Diana Krall music you could well just leave things alone. Not only would the extra speed improve the sound but the records would be over much quicker.

Perhaps we could look into this as an intentional mod for the Techie - imaging the relief we would get at hifi shows and demonstrations if all the Diana Krall was played in this manner... It's a brilliant idea!

I recently bought some top quality (to me anyway) 45rpm records and I played an entire side of one (Gladiator) at 33 & 1/3 rpm and thought the record sounded fantastic but it wasn't only me, my daughter's boyfriend came in and listened and said that he though the record sounded amazing too, either that or he was just trying to get on my good books by telling me any old bollox:eek:
