Unico amps?

Anyone using Unico amps? Just wondered what they were like in general. :scratch:

As above Steve. I tried a Unico Unison a while back. It was inoffensive and quite gutsy but a little coloured. Finish and build quality were ok but nothing special. If you want to tame bright sounding speakers or want to fill out the mids, it may be ok.

That is my general impression as well and I have listened to most of the products in the Unico line up. Things do get interesting further up the ladder - I liked the newer 50 integrated and the pre/power combo - generally entertaining and gutsy but I found the highs to be a little rolled off and a tad shut in and the bass a little too blossomy for my taste. Would certainly agree that the build and finish, at those price points, are rather ordinary; they're OK overall, but I think that there are quite a few other alternatives out there that score better in vfm terms.

I had a Unico at one time too but past it on as while it was quite musical, it wasn't particularly transparent.

Much better would be the Pathos Classic one, this hybrid punches well above its price point and can be turned into a 175 watt mono integrated from a 75 watt stereo integrated, so you end up with two one for the left channel and one for the right. I would recommend the mk2 version as it has a more coherent overall sound than the mk3 which sounds a little leaner and more forward. The mk2 is a lot better sound wise over the mk1, as is the mk3 over the mk1 but the mk2 is the best of the three version in my opinion.

The mk2 also looks better in my opinion with a more rounded transformer cover to the mk3s more square cover.

Possibly one of the prettiest amps around too.

Yep, as above.

Very "nice", but coloured in a nice way, and a bit nicely smoothed over so music always sounds nice.

If you want just nice to listen to :thumbsup:
