View Full Version : Where do you buy your music from?

Hi everybody!

I was interested in knowing where you buy your music from. Do you generally use the big stores or are you loyal with your local record shop? Do you use the internet? In my case I use ebay a lot to buy records but I go at least once a week to Ben's Collectors Records in Guildford (I live in Woking), which I recommend without reservations as it has unbelievable prices and I always find something new, it has everything from classical to heavy metal. You can have a look here if you're interested. Just bought an Ann Peebles record there for £2...

Ben's Records (http://www.bensrecords.com/)

Anyway, where do you usually buy? I'm thinking of records mainly, but I'll accept any kind of recommendation ;) . What do you recommend?

I tend to get CDs from either HMV if I'm in a wandering and browsing mood or Amazon if I know what I want.

I buy CDs mostly from Amazon and other on-line shops, and occasionally from high street retailers such as HMV, etc, but when it comes to vinyl I get it from a variety of sources.

New vinyl I get either from Diverse Vinyl, Amazon, Stamford Audio, or from Probe in Liverpool. I also use specialist on-line retailers such as Pure Pleasure for really high quality 200g stuff.

Second-hand vinyl I get either from my local record shop Moonlight Records in Wrexham, Grey & Pink in Chester, Hard To Find Records in Birmingham, or from Hairy Records in Liverpool. Sometimes I also get stuff from Oxfam shops and car boot sales.

aedagnino, your link to Ben's Records unfortunately doesn't work.

Nice one, Rob :)

It looks like a great place - wish it was near me. I'd never be out of it! I would imagine that it can't be far from you.

You need to buy a turntable, mate.

Just imagine playing all the 80s stuff you're into on vinyl! With a 1210 you could even play the 12" singles, which sound superb... :smoking:

You'll be able to hear the SL-1210 then, too :)

Alex D

... as it will change your listening habits for good! I have a 1210 too and I'm pretty happy about it, but I have to upgrade it soon, seeing all the sexy stuff you can do with it! I'm thinking of getting the fluid damper by KAB, and probably a better cartridge.

Yeah, Ben's shop is great and he's such a friendly guy, which is breath of fresh air when you've had bad experiences before (I used to live in Brighton and there were a couple of shops over there that had pretty snobbish sellers).

I've found this new internet shop, whatrecords.co.uk, that sells new vinyl too. Has anyone used it? If so, would you recommend it?

Hello

A great place to buy music online is Musicstack; http://www.musicstack.com/

I have only ever purchased CD's & SACD's, not LP's from reputable sellers but the delivery times and prices have been excellent. I have several CD's of the same album pressed in USA, Europe & Japan; I have found the higher quality pressings are from the USA.

Regards,
Mark Bartlett

Alex D

... can be great, but you have to be careful as the prices can be too high for anybody's liking. I've bought through them (records, it's been a long time since I bought a CD!) a couple of times, but I tend to use ebay more (even though this can be more risky as a lot of times the sellers don't know how to grade records). But yeah, musicstack, netsounds and gemm can be great to search that rare record you can't find anywhere else. Although, at least for me, nothing beats rummaging through stacks of vinyl and finding a lost gem. I found the Pixies first two albums for 50p each at a local charity shop the other day, mint!
By the way, I'm going to Bristol in a couple of weeks, can anybody recommend any good record shop there, that is walking distance from the town centre?

jimdgoulding

Amazon, CD Baby, CD Universe. I usually buy from independent sources at a lower price if any are listed. New vinyl from Classic Records and Acoustic Sounds.

Rick O
20-03-2008, 17:10
I try to buy my music directly from the band/artist, as it means they get more money.

I would feel loyalty to an independent record shop if there were any in my vicinity that stocked CDs that I was interested in.

Mike

This thread has just made me realise why I have to buy all my vinyl from online source's these days (I'll use any I come across, and eBay quite a lot)..... There is not one single surviving record shop where I live that I know of!

:(

If anyone knows of one in the Teesside area please let me know.

The vast majority of my CDs (I buy half dozen or so classical discs a week, on average) come used from eBay or Amazon Market Place.

Erm, excuse me mate for being somewhat critical, but why not take care of CD purchses yourself? Does Tasha take care of your pants purchases, too? If so, what 'secret' websites are used?

Tasha at home here in front of the pc:

"I've found those CDs you were looking for online. They only cost £6.50 each including postage. Do you want me to order them for you?"

Me out working in the taxi:

"Yes please."

Now read into that what you will. And no I don't buy my own pants. As you once said,

"I've got my minions to do that." Hasn't every bloke?

Hi Howard and welcome to the forum :)

Which 'mega stores' in London do you use - I presume you mean the multiples such as HMV, etc?

Incidentally, I have upgraded your account to Trade Member (Dealer). If you are also a distributor, or if there is a more appropriate title that reflects the nature of your business please let me know and I will amend it accordingly.

Thank you for the welcome. Not taken for granted, I assure you.

Re music, I use HMV Oxford Street and Virgin at the corner of Oxford Street and Tottenham Court Road. However, as I have an interest in Folk, Folk -Rock and related types, I use Ian & Stephanie Rennie at Musikfolk Limited for material that the megas won't stock VERY highly recommended. They can be found at: www.musikfolk.com

I used to spend £50 a week in our local independent shop until it closed because the rent got doubled overnight. I was so gutted. They were brilliant at labelling their favourite releases with listening comments or recommendations by the staff and I picked up hundreds of great things I'd have never come across any other way. Sadly, since Imperial closed none of the other shops in Bristol have come close.

When I was back in the Midlands I used to shop at Swordfish in Birmingham which was and still is a brilliant little independent shop. The only place I've seen 4 AMM releases in a row...

These days I get my stuff from Amazon, eBay, online independents like Norman Records, depends who has got whatever I'm after in stock. I buy a lot of stuff from Sierra Records in the US, a country rock / bluegrass specialist who focus on Byrds / Burritos related reissues and hard to find stuff.

I do miss thumbing through racks of well labelled stuff though. Shopping online doesn't allow for the serendipity of old school shopping.

Play.com or Amazon.co.uk for me. I still like my occasional wander around the local HMV and Zavvi, there’s sometimes a bargain to be had but internet rules pricewise 90-95% of the time. If I can get over to Cambridge I like to have an hour or so wandering around their Fopp searching for bargains.

My fave indie shop is down in Camberley, Surrey. The Rockbox. Great little shop I’ve been going to since the early 90’s. They do a great selection of vinyl as well, both new and secondhand. Tidy little shop which I heartily recommend to everyone.

I tend to price shop, so eBay gets first crack at me. If I cannot find what I want there, I look into Amazon, CD Now, Accoustic Sounds for 180 n 200 gram vinyl or if I am only looking for the HQ digital recordings, elusivecdisc.com.

One of the world's largest CD shops for Classical and Jazz is Beck's in the centre of Munich, well worth a visit.

Depends what you mean by browsing, Hans. Not in a physical sense, of course, but you can 'browse' the various genres of music for sale on-line. Also, I like taking a punt on something different that I've not heard of before. I've discovered quite a few gems that way :)

Playing the safe option tends to give you a somewhat limited music collection. As an aside, I can never understand how some people only listen to the one type of music. I see it as a bit narrow-minded and boring.

HMV online is a very good service for more recent releases. I got the 'seeger sessions' dbl heavyweight for £14. They have an huge back catalogue and delivery is free. If you've got several hours to spare just type vinyl or lp into the search. For specific artists just type lp after their name. I have found it consistently cheaper and more reliable than any online source. I use what records but their postage can be steep. Musicstack is revelatory at times.
for local convinience I use and reccomend soundclash records in Norwich

I use Amazon, occasionally ebay. Amazon marketplace are great (I usually end up buying from Caiman), and I've taken to buying second hand where I'm not too sure about an artist.

I bought 50 new jewel cases on eBay for £8, so if the disc is good - it usually is, and there is recourse if it's not clearly stated in the listing - and the artwork is acceptable (it's usually better than that) I can get good bargains for a pound or two - just slip it into a shiny new unscratched case (something Freudian in there...).:eyebrows:

Sometimes this isn't necessary - I got Cara Dillon's newest album on Amazon marketplace from a private seller (Philistine) who had played it just once. It came as new, a day or two after it's release date in new condition for £5 less than anyone else. It's great as well, though I'm not quite as sure about the production on this one compared to her other releases. Maybe I need another listen.:)

Recent experiences with eBay have generally been pretty good actually. Of the last 6 albums I've had through all were pretty much as described.

The stand-out items were:

Copy of Visage - Visage where the guy thought that no-scratches = mint. Trust me, it wasn't.

Copy of The History of The Who, totally spotless 1970 pressing that didn't look like it had been touched. 99p plus P&P!!

Copy of Genesis - Genesis which was actually OK but the seller INSISTED on refunding all my money (inc P&P) because HE wasn't happy....

When I go back to Glasgow I usually go to Mixed Up Records where the prices are very reasonable,in fact, dirt cheap sometimes.

Yesterday I bought 9 albums from the local Marie Curie shop @ £0.49 each and after a quick wash on the RCM,most of them don't look as if they'd been played.

This morning I received Zeit by Tangerine Dream in mint condition, for £2.99 + postage from this seller on e-bay.

I did not go through every post so if someone else mentioned Half Price Books pardon me. I'm in the Dallas TX area and there are HFB locations in every part of town, and they all have a used vinyl section, some larger than others. You have to check them out good because some of them are pretty beat up but I have found lots of gems for a couple of dollars. Not sure how many cities they are in (in the US) but I think several.
Also, for anyone else in the Dallas TX area, Forever Young in Grand Prairie is a warehouse-sized place with a fantastic vinyl selection. They are more expensive than HPB but always in beautiful condition.
I sometimes find myself down in Austin, and Waterloo Records is my choice when I'm there.
I am originally from New Orleans and when there Louisiana Music Factory is far and away the best place.
I also buy cd's at all of these places and occassionally on line.

Marcus at Sugarbush certainly has an interesting pricing policy - with a heavy emphasis towards providing him with a prosperous retirement. He'll also clog your inbox with a 'comprehensive' stock list every week. I specifically asked not to be on his mailing list & he wouldn't take me off it until I followed his lead by sending him back a few of his regular emails..........

Basically, IMO their stuff is as you'd have found it in the shops new, unless clearly stated otherwise. I've bought from them a number of times and been very pleased with my purchases. I bought a couple of 2nd hand CDs today from CEX, one of those places that buy your hardware and DVDs, games and CDs from you.

The one here in Southampton is quite big and they have a lot of CDs, some at very low prices. I picked up REM's Around The Sun and Accelerate for £2 and £2.50 respectively. To be fair, a lot of the cases are broken or cracked but as long as you're happy with that you can pick up a bargain. Mine have gone straight to lossless and into a storage box.

A lot (but definitely not all!) of the music I listen to is fairly obsure electronic stuff, which mostly dictates buying from more specialised shops. I've had good experiences with all of these:

While I really love having a physical object, and to flick through the booklet and credits etc., I'm not ashamed to say I purchase the majority (if not all) of my music on iTunes.

I'm studying music and the business of it at the moment, and while I will always prefer having a physical object, the vast majority of music purchasers are moving to a digital downloading business model. We are vastly shifting the may music is manufactured and sold, and I'm a big fan of the new way music is distributed and sold.

What is everyone's opinion on Digital Distribution? Good, bad, ugly?

While I really love having a physical object, and to flick through the booklet and credits etc., I'm not ashamed to say I purchase the majority (if not all) of my music on iTunes.

I'm studying music and the business of it at the moment, and while I will always prefer having a physical object, the vast majority of music purchasers are moving to a digital downloading business model. We are vastly shifting the may music is manufactured and sold, and I'm a big fan of the new way music is distributed and sold.

What is everyone's opinion on Digital Distribution? Good, bad, ugly?

wether we like it or not, digital (downloading) is the way things are going. Personally, FLAC is the 'lowest' quality that I will go for if I can.

Bad and ugly, I'm afraid.

If a majority of consumer's tacitly accept data-reduced music, how long do youy think it will be before the music biz starts ONLY recording data-reduced music?

Play.com mainly for me, service is usualy pretty good however my last order with them took 2 months to dispatch.

Went into HMV in Southampton last weekend and they only had chart CD's on display, also went into my local store in Newbury today and it looked they were beginning to clear the A-Z & Genre CD racks, so I don't know if HMV have decided just to concentrate on the DVD & games markets or whether I just happened to go into two crap stores.

The Wrexham and Chester branches of HMV are (happily) still full of all genres of CDs :)

Apparently, HMV are selling the Beatles Mono Box Set for £100 at the moment.

Also, Neil Young's Archive's Box for £30

Check your local store, and ask at the counter, they may not have them on display.

Edit: Southampton's HMV store had 3 on display for £100. I didn't get one

Apologies if this is old news, but I've just discovered the Marketplace at Discogs.com (http://www.discogs.com/). Basically if you don't know, Discogs is one of (if not the) definitive discography sites, and you can also buy records and CDs from traders on there - all seems to be much less informal and cheaper than ebay or Amazon marketplace, and so far I've had an excellent experience as I think a lot of the people on there are enthusiasts as much as traders. I picked up a CD from the States today for $20 that is virtually unobtainable over here, and listed on Amazon at over £140! The seller is also making me a CD-r of some of his own favourite little-known trip-hop/downtempo tracks which he is including for free (hoping for some repeat business, of course, but great service nonetheless.)

Anyone else had any dealings good or bad, and any cautionary advice?

I generally buy (music) CDs (which are ripped to FLACs) from the likes of Amazon or wherever else is the cheapest for what I am looking for, have also got the odd MP3 as a download from Amazon...

Hi Alex

How did your dealings with Discog go? The only thing I've experienced with them is complete confusion, bear in mind that's not uncommon, but I just can't figure it out. Any clues as to how it works?

Cheers.

I think Discogs acts a "middle man" and introduces you to a seller who has what you want.

I have made a few purchases on there and all have gone very well with items shipping from Germany very quickly.

bought a fair bit from discogs never had a problem, yes they are just a middle man, you buy nothing from them direct.

not sur if its been mentioned but www.beatport.com are ok if you take time to wade through the crap, and there is alot of crap, but they offer full quality .wav downloads for a fee.

I've been using 'sneaker net' of late...(very poor IT joke)

And have been using Rise Records at Warwick Arts Centre, they are the remnants of Fopp records (which was snuffed out by a bearded fellow who's name sounds like a particular pickle brand - 'allegedly'). There's a few branches around the country.

Very good for filling in gaps, lots of stuff for a fiver and under

I use Sister Ray or Vinyl Junkies in Berwick street London for all my vinyl purchases. They have a good selection of new and used records for sale. They can be a bit pricey on some items but hey ho if you want it at least you got it.

I took a leaf out of the dealers book and place an advert in my local free classified adds plus a couple of local newsagents from time to time stating I was interested in buying CD collections.

Words, actually, at the latest edition of Hifi Zine just out online from down under (North Sydney, actually). The Music Corner to be precise. There are some other writers there who are way better than me. Patrick Dillon has an article in a previous issue (there are only three thus far) that's a flippin riot and on the money and in the newest issue an excellent review of the Bryston BDA 1 DAC. And feel free to comment about any artical. That would be welcomed. I wrote about some Indian classical music, flamenco, 70's avant garde jazz (the album of the decade for me), and 60's rock. Hope you enjoy. Think you will.

I don't buy music any more, I either get it for free or rent it off the internet. I only use legit sites though.

Good deal for you there, Martin. A nice eclectic bunch of stuff - there can't be too many people who buy Rose Rose and Ted Nugent albums on the same day!!

:lolsign: Poor old Ted's got a lot of stuff languishing in the baragin bin these days. I have a lot of record cleaning and listening to do when my neighbours are up and about - bit early yet:)

The clearence rooms have to be seen to be believed - if you want to go through everything allow about 5 hours . I could have got a lot more but I am limited to how many I can carry back home on foot...
