Out of the blue, I suddenly have a hankering for a good old fashioned analogue tuner with a backlit blue dial. Yes indeed.

I haven't had a tuner for a good number of years after I bought a Denon 260L which I thought was crap. Flimsy little thing that skidded across the rack every time I pressed any of the buttons. No doubt a few blobs of blu tack under it's feet would have stopped that nonsense, but give me a big beefy solid built tuner that just sits there and behaves itself any day.

I remember back in the 70s walking into Unilet's store in New Malden which was almost in darkness with shelves full of these beauties all glowing away with their backlit dials and illuminated pointers. Happy days :)

Any idea when analogue transmissions finally get killed off Frank?

It'd be a shame to get a good tuner, only to find that maybe a year later it becomes a doorstop.

The latest I have heard is that the great British public wants to stay away from digital in their droves, so we might get a U-turn yet on the switchover.

DAB is crap in the car and I did have a DAB tuner for a very short while and was unimpressed with it.

Anyway, if this loony government abandons FM then it will still look very nice glowing away in my rack in my dotage

The idea of another tuner has its appeal, but I won't bother as I hardly ever used my last one and gave it away.

FM provides a significant part of my listening pleasure - it is in use every day I am at home.

Current tuner in use is a Quad FM4, but I have six FM tuners:

Quad FM3, FM2
Cambridge T55
B&O 1700

and a Leak Troughline Stereo.

I also have two AM tuners, but these are not used:

Quad AM1 and AM3.

I have a lovely quartz synthesised Technics tuner from the late 70s - silver with brushed aluminium fascia and soft touch keys. Lights up blue and orange. Might stick a picture up tomorrow. Wired into dedicated roof top aerial but I never use the thing. I can't cope with the ads on the commercial stations and the BBC is more chat than music.

What do you think of the Cambridge Audio T55? I really liked mine when it was working. Sometimes, depending on atmospheric conditions I used to be able to pick up some foreign station - in stereo - and it sounded excellent.

Frank,

I too was sceptical but the DAB implementation done by Naim in my Naimnet system is surprisingly good and non-fatiguing.

You have got the essence of what I mean Al.

I don't want just any old tuner to listen to, it's the looks the old tuners have with their gorgeous backlit dials and the illuminated pointer that has got me hankering after another one. I had a Pioneer SX-636 back in the 70's feeding a pair of Ditton 15s

and that was tasty in the looks department.

Now, who wouldn't lust after the mighty SX-1010?

But the SX-1280 although huge and impressive hasn't quite got "it" for me

It sounds fab as a headphone amp, not tried it as a speaker amp yet, I need some speaker cables with bare wire ends!
