De-blinging the stock platter

Has anyone attempted to "de-bling" the stock platter?

By which I mean, one way or another, remove the dots on the outer edge?

I have seen some customisation services on ebay which appear to remove the black, so it's all silver...but I'm in two minds.

I thought that possibly I could create a smooth look, maybe by carefully applying chemical metal (it would not be very thick and so I guess would have negligible impact on the balance) and spray it a smooth, satin black.

Just wondering whether anyone has tried anything?

I do not really think of them as "bling" - now the gold plated technics - that is a different story. Anyhow - I do not mind the dots.

I meant no offence to to those who DO like the stock platter, of course!

No offense taken of course - haha- I'm just ok with the platter as is. I think Zu has a service where they upgrade the platter and as a option they grind off the dots - but at that point I'd buy a Mike New platter. I've seen others paint the platter edge black - it also looks pretty cool and is a low cost way of hiding them.

Inspire Hi-Fi machine the dots off when they do their 'upgraded' version of the 1200.

I would think a competent local machine shop would be able to skim the dots off on a lathe without too much trouble. Check yellow pages.

Agreed and very good idea - should be very low cost - when I was into cars - I took my flywheel to a machine shop known in the area for balancing/blue printing - for lightening - they knocked off several pounds and balanced it at the same time.

Hi Keiron99,

I haven't tried this with my 1210 platter but I did use brasso (silver) to remove the matt sheen on the outer edge of the platter of my LP12 to uncovered a high polished finish :eek:.

I wonder if elbow grease and brasso liquid would effectively remove the black paint on the platter leaving a silver finish...anybody tried this?

What do you get if you join the dots? Anyone tried?

If I had one (and I don't) and wanted to de-dot the platter (and I wouldn't ), I'd use fine grade wet 'n' dry wet.

Yeah I've done that. It comes out as nude maggie thatcher on my Mk V. The Mk II comes out as something else. Anyone?
