Beresford as preamps

Just wondering if there's much love out there for these dacs being used as preamps ?
I have a 7520 with gator board currently on dac duties, but am going to give it preamp duties for a week or 2 ,

I had a highly modified 7520 using the variable output. I thought it was superb and very hard to beat.

The TC-7533 can't be used as a preamp on its own. You would need a passive preamp or something similar to connect at its output.
I am working on a preamp version, but the start of manufacturing date is a bit uncertain right now. I got an operation coming up that is going to sideline me for a while. So I don't want to press the GO button without being able to overlook the QC etc. at factory level.

I used a Gatorized Caiman as a pre-amp a couple of years ago purely out of curiosity and was subsequently impressed by its openness and clarity. The only reason I stopped using it as a pre was due to it not having a line input to accommodate my TT and phonostage otherwise I would have been well sorted ;)

That really won't work I'm afraid. The line out on the TC-7533 is fixed level so you'd only get a balanced sound at one specific volume level and headphone outputs aren't designed to drive a line level input, so you could cause damage. You could get round this by splitting the line output to your speakers and sub and then using the level control on each of them independently but it would be a constant battle to get a balanced sound every time you changed the volume.

So, not enough current (I think).
But I'd love it if it could be inexpensively modified i.e. removing the headphone up to where it connects to the sound path and putting relevant circuitry in, unless you have to faff with power supply et al. Can tell I know nothing of electronics

Like Dave (synsei) I used a gatorised Caiman as a pre and very good it was too. Sold it when I was recently reaquainted with vinyl and the scales dropped off my ears!!:lol:
