AR XA with a Denon DL110

By the way I have a ADC/NAD 9200 , complete with a new Swiss made Mantra Audio stylus, which is surplus to requirements now. Underrated cartridge...

I have a DL-110 and really like it. Massive improvement on the AT95E I had before.

I'd be really interested to hear what would constitute a worthwhile upgrade from a 110 - what would I have to spend to get a significant improvement in sound quality? (bearing in mind that I'm very happy with the presentation of the 110)

I went from a DL-110 to an SAE 1000LT the difference was huge and a complete no contest, I sold the Denon straight away.

There's two version of the SAE an LT (line trace) and an E (elliptical) but seemingly there's very little difference between the two of them.

Retail prices for the two versions are about £250 (LT) and £200 (E) but I bought mine NOS from a fellow forum member for £150 delivered.

M91-ED or XLM II or III is where the XA used to be at - oh alright, include an AT120E too :) The arm ain't as bad as it seems on the surface and I'd probably suggest a cheap cork mat as well (chizzwizard on eBay does a lovely one for a tenner or so, so not expensive).

A shame the DL110 has doubled in price in very recent years, the pound/dollar situation enabling an extra price increase well over and above exchange rate differences to filter in for so many bits of audio paid for in US dollars :( Back in 2006 or so, it could still be got for under £70!

Although the DL-110 is getting more expensive, it is a fantastic cartridge, and always worth consideration. I love mine, it squarely trounces some much more expensive offerings from other manufacturers.

I also have an Entre 1 MC from the late '70s. It cost me about £90 when new.

A lot of money in 1979...

I have had 4 ( I think it is ) styli fitted by Expert Pickups. Wyndham Hodgson ( Prop. ) told me
it is still one of his favourite cartridges.
I haven't tried the DL110 in the system the Entre is used in.
Could be an interesting listen...

I had, actually still have, a DL-110 and it was fabulously good, in fact it gave my Benz Ace SL a decent run for its money. But it was good. Both cartridges were running on an ifi iphono stage. I have since changed phono stages and the new phono stage and the Denon do not like each other ... maybe something to do with loading which is all a black art to me. So to answer your question as to what you would have to spend is really tricky as you may have take the phono stage into consideration. Making it more difficult is the fact that it is virtually impossible to 'try before you buy'.

If you mention your tonearm, table, phono stage, star sign and preferred football team - preferably in a new thread - then there are several on the forum (more knowledgeable that I) who can point you in the right direction.

Does it sound lean/bright/harsh? Try loading your phono input down from 47K to 1-8K ohms.

A Hong Kong seller on eBay has it for £83.
