Again, thinking out loud as a longbterm plan - If my RB251 does not sell, I may as well use it, so I need suggestions of a good second hand deck which will give me a different sound to the Technics. I quite like the looks of the Gyrodec and similar styles, but sneaking an expensive deck past Mrs H will be difficult.

The Technics sounds good, but I think something with a more "relaxed" sound for chilling out to would help.

Dunno what your budget is, but you could pick up a decent 401 for £350-400 if you're not scared of servicing it yourself. Very plinth dependent though.

How about a Heybrook TT2? To some people they sound really nice, perhaps even better than the traditional fruitbox of the 80's?

Er, what about a Rega?

Rega? Expensive over here in France, but thanks for the suggestion.

Is a Lenco L80 any good?

Interesting, but won't ship to France.
I have found a Planar 3, and a Thorens 166 Mk.II
The Rega is quite a bit cheaper, but which is the better deck?

I have this problem all the time (non shipping to France that is!!)

Do you not have one of the UK companies that do UK shopping for ex-pats operating near you? There are three here and will all bring stuff out if you get it delivered to their UK depots.

I even had a big lathe bought out and that cost me only €40 instead of the £110 a courier wanted. If they want more than €10 for a TT it would be a surprise. Might be worth checking.

I regularly ship to France and it doesn't cost much more than in the UK - next day delivery.

Seconded! The TT2 is a cracking turntable

However, Rega arms work superbly well on Michell T/Ts (as well as on their own ones, of course).

I own a stock SL1200 and Planar 2. If you want a more relaxed sound but without sacrificing timing then I'd suggest the Rega.

Yes, good call. A Rock works very well with Rega arms.

But does the Rock do relaxed?

The Rock is comparatively low on colourations and therefore pretty neutral, it does whatever kind of listening you choose. Check the online reviews out, you won't find much bad said about the sound.

+1

The Rocks are VERY revealing turntables....they don't take any prisoners!!
