I agree with Dave, but it might take you some time to find the exact version that your after.

Trying to avoid the bay if possible for a number of reasons, must be that exact plinth, must be totally original too.

What's the bearing and platter like compared to say a Thorens 160?

Different! :)

(but probably on a par)

Very helpful Geoff!!

I was just wondering what might be responseable for it's apparent sound quality. Maybe the way the motot drives the platter.

My guess would be the good quality bearing, the considerable mass of the well balanced platter, the very smooth running and stable motor & drive assembly and the sturdier than average base plate.

By the way, the TD160 should not be disregarded. It's a good TT and can be upgraded quite easily to a very fine standard. Just doing one up right now actually.

Hi Ralph

Is it the same as the one pictured & does it have the lid?

Am I right in thinking the motor drives the underside of the top of the platter, rather than at the outter edge?

I used to have a Thorens 160 and Hadcock Geoff and loved it. Sad tale of woe which I won't bore you with.

Yes, the largish idle wheel drives the undersurface of the platter, which is very finely machined. The tapered motor drive spindle sits parallel to the platter (underneath obviously) and the idler wheel is drawn across to contact both and transfer drive. Very neat and effective.

Thanks Geoff. I presume doing things that way was thought to have some particular merit over the more conventional way of driving the platter.

It seems to have some benefits. I've had many Goldring Lencos and never seen a worn idler wheel, whereas I've seen quite a few rim drive idlers that were worn out. I'd say rim drives are mechanically noisier, you can often hear a whir from them, but the GLs are very quiet. Also the speed settings are moveable and the detents can be unlocked and reset to allow very accurate speed setting with a strobe disc. You can actually sweep across the whole speed range if you lift the lever and move it back and forth ignoring the detents.

How does the GL 72 compare ? There is one for sale locally for £125.

I don't want it, but someone on TAOS might...

The 72 can sound nice, but it has a lower mass platter which limits its potential. With a bit of messing about, it can be adapted to take the 75 platter, but it's not worth the bother really. Just get a 75 (or 78 or 88 or 99) in the first place.

If you want to fit a 'GL75' platter to a 'GL72' you need to swap the bearing also but they are not a straight swap the bearing housing mounting holes don't line up.

Treat yourself to one of these Martyn:

Give it a clean & lube, bung a good mat on it, mount it in a nice solid plinth with a good arm and you'll be making fine sounds!
