Volkswagen Scirocco

Has anybody got one? I have to get rid of my Lexus soon and as the kids are grown up I might get myself a two door coupe. I like the look of the Scirocco and the reviews I have read seem to rate it.

The depreciation has already happened, and a looked after example will not be unreliable, it's a myth that Alfas are unreliable cars. You will get a great example of a V6 for under £1500. Bargain or what?

I bought an older model years ago and really was surprised just how roomy and economical it was. With the back seat folded down it was almost a mini estate car. 44mpg wasn't shabby either despite me having a heavy right foot :eyebrows:

My only gripe with the latest model is that it doesn't really stand out amongst the corporate VW image, having a similar body style to other models in the line up.

The old scirroco was a cool car. The Corado was even cooler.

The new version looks pretty good but its a golf really. Not that is a bad thing.

You will probably hate this Ali but I would go for a diesel one as I do a fair few miles. A sheep in wolves clothing....I would go for a year or two old one.
I know what you mean about the corporate styling Frank. Its not bad but a coupe should be a bit more exciting. I looked at the Astra GTX which, I think, is not bad style-wise but the depreciation is bad.

Did you know VW also did VR6 versions of the Jetta and Vento. Very rare now and not common back then.

Vr6 jetta they were great cars a mate had one , the trouble with the new scirocco is its just to high the roof is the same height as a golf its sporty look is an optical illusion

My diesel Lexus is has a crap engine so anything a bit nippier would be welcome. I have had three Audi,s, loved them all. The A5 is quite a big car isnt it?

Circumstances demand that I continue to have a sensible car at the mo. After the Sierra failed its MOT, we bought a 15 year old Audi A4. Most impressed with the build quality and the way it drives. An Alfa it ain't but that can wait for a couple of years.

We had to go to the local Volks/Audi dealer to get some bits and whilst there, looked around at all the shiny new cars. There wasn't one that would have tempted us to spend any more than we did on the A4.

We have had this discussion before of course, about standing out from the crowd. Boring, boring, boring. Even the attempts at coupes seem bloated and lacking in any real style. Corporate, committee designs the lot of them.

I remember the original Scirocco. Very nice car, I seem to recall that JK Setright rated it very highly. The Corrado VR6 I drove and that too was a very good car that somehow managed to hide its Golf underpinnings.

I often sit and try to decide what car I would buy these days if the budget was unlimited and I haven't yet seen anything to convince me that 'this is it'. I'd probably buy seven old Alfas and really enjoy my motoring again instead of having to drive like an old man.

Don't know about the new one's, but i had an original MK1 Scirocco Storm many years ago, it was Schwartz metallic in color, with biscuit color leather, i loved it, great little car, however, they rusted like hell, i spent a fortune on mine on body work etc.

My brother had a new Q5 3.0 TDi V6 which he kept for a year. That went like the clappers and was even good on fuel, but it had problems. He sold it after first getting a puncture in France and finding that the 'no spare wheel' policy was a total let down, as the tire re-inflator/repair kit didn't work and he was stranded waiting for recovery for hours and next, back in England, having a mysterious total electrical failure which the main dealer could find no explanation for, as the car restarted and then ran normally after recovery. The Q5 was traded in (on very good terms) for a new Eos 2.0 TDi which has been very satisfactory and just about as quick.

It is based on the A6 chassis so is a little bigger than the A4 but drives amazingly :)

Biggest bit of advise is don't touch Audi, BMW or Mercedes between late 2004 (54/05 plate) and early 2008 (57/08 plate) as they were all cost cutting and you'll have problems with them. My current car is a 54 plate A4 and I have had quite a few niggling issues. My main issue has been with the brakes.. Their cost cutting meant that they have put A3 spec brakes onto a A4 which weighs more and is faster… doh! :doh:

They say that once you test drive a car the salesman has you. That was me today, I bought the Scirocco on the spot. Its a 2.0 litre Tdi and handles superbly. I will take a snap when I get it home in about a week.

If you've a hankering for a Scirocco then go for it. A tidy well kept one will always stand out over a lot of the modern day generic, no character jobbies. I always had an eye for them and that gorgeous Corrado - To think they put a big V6 in a car that size :eek:

Just keep your right foot planted to the floor and it shouldn't spin - its a front wheel drive problem:)

The very first Scirroco is even nicer with slightly less angularness, similar soft corners to the original Polo. Corrado yes a cool car.. Friend's dad had the Golf Mk3 VR6 as soon as it came out - it's coolness was unfortunately marred by the stink of stale cigarette smoke in it :( Currently being driven by his now widow at about 26mph and had been for the last 18 odd years :(

Sadly cars are all looking the same these days .. VW is getting some BMW vibes which in turn look like Japanese style car design. Health and safety regulation gives too many design constraints to have cars looking different.

There are a lot of cowboys out there doing this kind of thing. I'd suggest joining some VW forums and asking for recommendations of who to use.

Quite large gains can be had - 50hp or more is often possible. Modern diesels are detuned and the likes of DPF and EGR valves added to lower emissions.

There will be several options to go for - power versus economy, the choice is yours. I'd opt to be a little more modest in the power gain, which will be kinder to the gearbox and clutch, and the increased torque should even give slightly better fuel economy, as long as you don't drive it like a loon of course. :-)

If you take a look at say BMW 1 series, the 116, 118 and 120 diesels are exactly the same engine, the extra power output is down to mapping.

Great drive providing that suspension was looked after but ultimately flawed, much like the Mk2 Golfs. Head gaskets went for a pastime on these and electric relays burnt out with regularity on mine. Had the head skimmed and gasket done at 90K miles but it went again within 10k miles. Mine was a 1.8 GTi 8v and pulled like a train. So much quicker (torquier) for its modest 115BHP than later 1.8 injection engines strangled by Catalytic converters and leanburn engines. Sadly it all went downhill after that when I joined the Manta GT/E club!

Depends on the map you opt for. I'd decide what you want to go for and run it past your insurance before you go ahead.
