has anybody had any experience using different types of material/compounds directly under bookshelf speakers.i have been using Atacama gel pads for a number of years and saw an article online the other day stating that oak cone feet give a much cleaner, smoother sound and also placing jumbo oak feet under components really opens the sound up is this just another ounce of snake oil oozing out of the internet or has anybody honestly heard a difference.i would appreciate your thoughts on this subject:brickwall: pete.

There are no absolutes - you have to try this for yourself. No-one else will have done it with an identical system, room or supporting surface, much less your ears! Give some different things a go, but my own opinion is that spending money on cones made from magic audiophile oak trees is money wasted! The are plenty of other ways to skin this cat more cheaply than that.

Hi Peter, The Grand Wazoo is correct the only way is to try it for yourself. I've just been experimenting with Atacama gel pad under my Q Acoustics 2010is myself and find that the sound seems to be better focused than without the pads.I was thinking about raising a similar thread myself as I'm awaiting delivery of some new speaker stands and was wondering what other people's experience was regarding coupling/decoupling the speakers from the stand.

I use Auralex Mo-Pads. They are used widely in recording studios to isolate studio monitors. They are very effective and only cost £26.99 on Amazon.

Blu-tak for stand mounting.

On other surfaces I have had good results with these:

...but then I haven't tried oak cones.

sorbothane spheres work well under my Monitor Audio 7s for more than 20 years,
I also used foam from discarded harddisk packaging material which works equally well but looks less posh.
Whatever keeps your bookshelves from acting as a subwoofer is ok.
