View Full Version : Snell type E speaker repair

On behalf of a friend.

Yesterday one of his type E's stopped working very suddenly ! The tweeter still functions, it's the bass driver that's dead, could it be the xover?

Any ideas, the amp is an Art Audio Diavolo which is fine.

Any suggestions to where he could take it for repair?
Obviously both speakers will probably need some servicing as they are 25 years old.

Hi Chris

If it's the woofer then there's two main possibilities. Either a dry joint on the LF crossover section with the inductor (unlikely) or input terminal or perhaps the voice-coil itself has had insulation breaking down and has shorted. If the latter sometimes you can tell as it will seize if the coil's welded itself with heat and you wont be able to move the woofer in by gently pushing it. A multi-meter across the woofer will tell you (given that it still moves freely) if it's the voice coil as well.

Thanks for replying Paul, I have a multimeter, the woofer appears to move freely? John's looked at the xover and it looks ok, wiring appears ok, it was working and sounding great the day before?

Then yesterday the bass driver just died?

Try removing the tri-wire links at the back and put the meter across the woofer (bottom) set of terminals set to the lowest DC resistance scale and see what you've got. It could be something very simple in which case it could be a very easy fix.

Paul, there is no resistance across the LF terminals, the HF is still measuring something.

Pretty certain now the fault is in the cross over, as we managed to test the driver and it still works.

Interesting but bloody frustrating afternoon for John.
