Hmmm, I think I may be a fellow sufferer. I've started saying 'cool' a lot, 'dude' is another word which has crept in unannounced too. Most of my mid-life crisis experiences began in my early 40's though when I suddenly discovered nightclubs again and developed a burning desire to own fast cars, motorbikes and screamingly fast gaming PC's to satiate my need for prettier explosions... Fate stepped in to save me from making a complete wally of myself and knackered up my back, so now my most prized possessions (other than my system of course) are a dressing gown and a pair of tartan slippers...

Ninanina
25-01-2014, 22:56
dressing gown and a pair of tartan slippers...

Sorry but I've told all the peeps I know that if I start wearing a dressing gown or slippers they must shoot me.... a couple of years ago my sister bought me a pair of slippers and they are still in the wardrobe just to remind me what NOT to wear...

I'm with you on the 'cool' and 'dude' bit though... it's a mystery... I've certainly already done the fast motorbikes... when I got home after a fast ride if my hands were shaking then I knew it was good.... hang gliding was the only other sport that gave me hand shakes... :mental:

If it's a mid life crisis and I'm now 51 does that mean I will last until I'm 102 ????? What an awful thought, especially as I didn't think I'd make it to 50....!!

My puter dictionary says the meaning of 'hippie' is:

"a person of unconventional appearance, typically having long hair and wearing beads, associated with a subculture involving a rejection of conventional values and the taking of hallucinogenic drugs"

Some is true of me.....

The Hippie revolution was Originally a 60's American thing, Sex.. Politics & Drug experimentation were the thing man, of course the same thing spread to Europe & the UK to a certain extent..A lot of people get confused by certain aspects of the 60's they tend to throw them all into one box.. A lot of folks just like the image but know very little about the true aspects of the revolution.

Sounds like you're just enjoying life Bev, we're only here once so get on with it :eyebrows:

I think my 'crisis' must have been the reason I took up paramotoring, haven't looked back since.
You have some good attributes to go that way Bev, a lot of pilots come from a motorbike background, and you've done hang gliding so you know how exhilarating flight is.

Just a thought,

Nothing to worry about Bev...:D

I had my mid life moment back in 2004 at the age of 40...

I quit my well paid job, went traveling for 3 1/2 years, had my ear re-pierced and got my first tattoo.

Came back with a different mindset and threw the entire contents of my house out and I mean everything. Every knife, fork, spoon, TV, bed, sofas etc and started again (all except my lp's ;))

Now I have a shit job and a sparse house but great memories...

Hippy phase is ok in principal. Let me know if you would like my signwriter friend to do you one of his specials - a park "keep off the grass" sign with a little marijuana leaf in the corner. But be careful listening to Hendrix and learning guitar. He plays left handed, but with an upside down right handed, and has fingers that can lace shoes. Just don't go there

Not sure I agree with your view of 'how it was' Andr'e.

I was there in the thick of I suppose. Perhaps the beginnings of it all were a couple of years or more before in the US, but the 'Hippie Scene' blew open big time in the UK about 1967/1968 and I was 19 coming up to 20 at the time (you work it out). The politics probably drove things harder in America, especially the peace movement (remember The Eve of Destruction by Barry McGuire, 1965), but it affected things here too, very much. As for the Flower Power thing, well that was definitely kicked off by the yanks, but we ended up as much into it as they were, All the Acid & Ganja you see. Peace Brother! ;)

The Barbarian

Getting back to the archetypical Hippie that people have a picture in their head of is a Woostocky USA thing not what you saw in the UK. Where in the 60's UK did you see naked men & women covered in body paintings with Flowers in their hair, peace man & all that?

The UK counterculture was different from the USA as was dress code. Thats all im trying to say.

The far out places to go around 1967/68 were places the UFO club Tottenham court road. Scruffs that don't get a wash, long hair, glass backs that don't want to work don't make an hippie.

Audioman

Ever seen footage of the first Glastonbury festival? - plenty naked hippies. I remember seeing hippies around in trucks and vans into the 70s. There weren't that many and probably not that many real hippies in the USA except for California - just they congregated at music festivals. Up to the 80's Evis let hippie/traveler types into the Glastonbury festival for free. Also there were a bunch that turned up at Stone Henge every year. All this came to an end due to disturbances and growing commercialism.

The Barbarian
27-01-2014, 11:28

;) I've dug out my purple desert boots and blue crushed velvet flares. The rainbow tie-dyed grand dad vest is in the tumble drier after a wash, I've found my elephant hair wrist bands, my neck beads and suede sweatband and tassled belt, so I'll be ready for anything!

Here's one view of hippies:

They took a whole bunch of acid
So they could see where it's at

They lived on a whole bunch of nothing
They thought they looked very good
They'd never ever worry
They were always in a hurry
To convince themselves that what they were
Was really very groovy

Yes, they believed in all the papers
And the magazines that defined their folklore
They could never laugh
At who or what they thought they were
Or even what they thought
They sorta oughta be
They were totally empty
And their lives were really useless
So what the f***?

They didn't have no sense of humor
Now they got nothing left
To laugh about
Including themselves

They were mellow
They were yellow
They were wearing smelly blankets
They looked like Donovan fans

They were walkin' 'round
With stupid flowers
In their hair and everywhere
They tried to stuff 'em up the guns
Of all the cops
And other servants of the law
Who tried to push 'em around

Now I've seen 'em tightenin' up they headbands
On the weekend
And they get loaded
When they came to town
They walked around in Greenwich Village
To buy posters they could hang up
In them smelly little secret
Black light bedrooms
On Long Island
Singin': "Jimi come back!"

Now come back and regulate the boy's fuzz-tone
Your haze was so purple
It caused your axis to be bold as love
Now Jimi (feed back) gimme some feedback
Come back and feed back on my knapsack
You can feed back the fuzz tone from your wah-wah
While you bend down
And set your stuff on fire.........

Well, that has a ring of rather sour grapes to me. Maybe a lot of it was just nonsense, but I can't think of another period when so many people basically just had generally harmless fun, or for so long.

The Grand Wazoo

I don't think any sort of grapes had anything to do with it. Frank Zappa, who was very much there at the time, was never one for calling a spade a manual earth turning implement, was he? He was also the only person with a public voice within the so called 'counter-culture' to see it for what it was at the time and say so.

Yes Chris, good old Frank, got a lot of respect for him. Was that a quote? I didn't realise. Don't recall it even though I've got most of his albums. He certainly said what he thought though (much of it a wind up).

Lou Reed wasn't too keen on hippies either:

http://deadessays.blogspot.co.uk/2010/09/velvets-and-dead.html

Reed and Doug Yule, in a 1970 interview:
LOU: We had vast objections to the whole San Francisco scene. It's just tedious, a lie, and untalented. They can't play and they certainly can't write. The Airplane, the Dead, all of them...
DOUG: They lose track of where the music comes from - they start thinking it instead of playing it. Especially the Dead. Now I saw the Dead when they just started, and they were a bunch of scuzzy kids just having a ball playing rock & roll - they were a lot of fun. But then they started thinking about what they were doing too much.
LOU: I can get off understanding the kick it was to play Lovelight.... But they're amateur...they can't play. Jerry's not a good guitar player. It's a joke, and the Airplane is even worse, if that's possible.
DOUG: Jerry, he'll play the same solo for a half hour, but if he'd done it for just two minutes....he plays the same notes over and over again.
LOU: You listen to the Beatles, or you listen to 'Gimme Shelter' by the Stones, and Keith isn't playing many notes, but the notes he's playing are so thought out, so perfect...
Q: But don't you think a lot of people get off on something like the Dead because it's so loose?
LOU: It's what people are settling for....they're getting third-hand blues. It's a fad.... People like Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, all those people are the most untalented bores that have ever lived. Just look at them - can you take Grace Slick seriously? It's a joke. And the whole thing is, the kids are being hyped this on FM radio. Well, now finally it's dead, the whole San Francisco thing is dead.
