Is there anything more exciting in life than being woken up on a saturday morning by the parcel delivery man, signing for the package and rushing into your listening room wearing only your wife's silk panties
to place said slab of the black stuff on your TT to be rewarded with a sound that was everything you dreamed it would be and sheer delight?

Maybe a lottery win could be but I live in the real world!

I bought the Thelma Huston album from Discogs, very good copy and sounding fantastic but it's a wee bit Dixieland big band sounding to me, don't know if I'll keep it.

I've also ordered Gladiator and Hugh Masekela (Hope) and Monk's Dream.

Can't wait to hear the two AP records above though.

I've had the Thelma Houston album on the Sheffield Labs label for nearly 40 years and have just ordered off the bay the James Newton Howard album on the same label, it's on the way now so I am hoping its in good condition.

What is the Thelma Houston album?

In the USA there was a label called Sheffield Labs who decided that it would be a good idea to record straight from studio to master disc, forgoing tape or mixing. As I'm sure you realise, this meant that each side of the record had to be recorded in one hit. This put a lot of pressure on musicians, singers and engineers. The results were spectacular. There were very few albums recorded this way. The most famous of these was an album recorded by Thelma Houston & Pressure Cooker called "I've Got The Music In Me" obviously due to the process only a finite number of albums could be pressed.

I may still have a copy of it knocking about. I saw Thelma performing this about then. I think it was in Virgin studios. My recollection of much back then is a bit fuzzy. Pretty sure I may also have a copy of the Sheffield Labs James Newton Howard album too.

I've also still got two new 'Music For Pleasure' mag, super quality pressing releases from the eighties, still in their unopened cling film wraps, Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd and the first Rickie Lee Jones album.

Interesting. I didn't know Music For Pleasure did super quality pressing as that label was also EMI 's budget label during the 60 & 70's.
Is the label now one of the new breed of labels producing 180grm records?

I personally think that Kiki Dee's version is much better than Thelma Huston's.

The album is great though, stand out tracks for me are, Got to get you into my Life and the last track on side two, the intrumental of I've got the music in me.

BTW, Gladiator is f@cking awesome but my system is struggling trying to play it, think it's the Rega Brio-R's phono stage that is having a hard time trying to play the album, my modded phono stage is away being, ehrm, modded:eek:

I know exactly what you mean David. Actually just this very Saturday morning I was woken by the Courier at the crack of dawn with a large parcel. In me boxers I rushed said package into my living room and unpacked my new phono stage!

Don't you mean the Practical Hi-Fi (which changed it's name to Hi-Fi Today) releases? I have both of those titles and you are missing out big time if you have not played the PF. If not a PF fan you are best keeping it sealed as I estimate it's worth £5 or 6 hundred quid and the RLJ £200.

Seriously though I'm not saying that Kiki Dee is a better singer than TH just that I prefer KD's version of the song to the one on the TH album.

I am a child of the seventies, I was a teenager when the album came out, 17 when KD released her version in circa 1976.

I also prefer the Kiki Dee version. She has to be one of the all time under rated singers and has written a few decent songs as well. First white artist to be signed to Motown.

Mine parcels arrive to work. For me the exciting time is when I can finally flop down at home, pour a nice glass of scotch and put the new vinyl on the LP12. I really look forward to those first few crackles on the lead in :)

Certainly is a fantastic record no question about that, probably one of the best recordings I've ever heard, just not my thang though.

Having said that I love 70s soul and was brought up on Motown by three older sisters who played it constantly!

BTW, Peter, just thought I'd mention this before you send dosh but the runout on this album is very noisy on both sides, no idea if it's just my record or that is typical for all of them but wanted to make you aware of that.

The record and sleeve are in great condition and the record is very quiet otherwise but it's just the very last groove on the run out however I find myself moving sharpish to get the needle off the record.

Don't think I've another record like that.

I have just received a copy of the Sheffield Labs album of "James Newton Howard &Friends". This like the Thelma Houston album is a direct to disk recording.
I'm listening to it as I'm typing this missive. If you wish to hear what vinyl is capable of you should beg, borrow or take without permission a copy of this record. The music may not be to everybody's taste (I like it) as it is an album of rock music composed and played on synthesizers with drums and percussion. Recorded in December 1983 it has had rave reviews from both stateside and UK reviewers. One British magazine wrote "the sound is fabulous...makes other albums sound dreadful by comparison.
