Full marks to Henley!

A small tale of excellent customer service.

I received a new boxed Ortofon Cadenza Blue from a well-known hi-fi retailer which arrived boxed but without a stylus guard and I was having kittens as it sat exposed on my TT which does not have a dust cover. I rang Henley to buy a replacement. it was sent out immediately and they would not hear of my paying for it.

I don't know what the guard retails for, but I do know what the potential financial consequences of damaging the needle or the cantilever would be, so I was grateful for this prompt and free service. It is the kind of thing which buys my brand loyalty.

They normally charge £7 incl. postage, but this is normal service for Henley Designs who in my experience and having dealt with them for many years offer superb support.

I would mention that I have doubts about the supplier of your Cadenza Blue. I have NEVER heard of an Ortofon cartridge being supplied without a stylus guard. Gave me palpitations when I fitted your cartridge.

The absence of a stylus guard is one reason not to purchase a Benz. I get the palpitations on a regular basis!

I've had cause to phone Henley for advise a couple of times and they are always helpful and never condescending when answering questions posed by a numpty, top firm.

Frankly unless the box was factory sealed I would be suspicious of your supplier and frankly would have sent the cartridge back. Obviously if this was a factory error then Henley are under obligation to put things right. This is what I would expect as Normal customer service and any company falling below this level would not get my business.

I would also point out that Henley Design are distributors and have no input of how an item is packaged. As I mentioned on a previous post, Ortofon, to my knowledge have never accidentally left some thing out.
The finger has to point to the retailer who I suggest used the cartridge for demo purposes and when re-packing left the stylus guard out. The cartridge should then have been sold as ex demo at a suitable price and not sold as new.

I have known retailers to get up to this sort of trickery in the past. One reason why many don't deserve to remain in business. Best to order from an online specialist in sealed boxes. If it appears to be opened and from that one would assume is used it should be returned for a full refund.

In general, Ortofon cartridges aren't supplied in sealed boxes.

Interesting, Dave. What do they come in, then? :)

All the SPUs I've bought, which have come through Henley, were in sealed boxes.

I have all the 2M range plus various Vivo, Rondo and Cadenza and all are in unsealed cardboard boxes. Maybe, the more expensive ranges are supplied in sealed cartons - I'm not sure.

MY black came in sealed box. At that price I expect a little shrink wrap.

How was it sealed then ? The Red, Blue, Bronze and Black I have here are not sealed.
