Having noticed the discussion on pfm, and the link to the BBC article, I sent Del an email at work, entitled 'Wrexham zoomers'. Here is word-for-word what I sent her (including the link):

To which she replied:
"Fighting over 50p!"
...and my reply:
"Pathetic, isn't it? No wonder Wrexham can't sustain the existence of any shops that are remotely specialist in nature or out of the norm, with clowns like that around, driving down standards!"
Wrexham is a great little town, especially the surrounding areas, which are quite beautiful, but there are too many brain-dead idiots and chavs with no ambition in life or any sense of joie de vivre.

Your statement describes the state of affairs in most towns and cities around the country and it'll only get worse as falling incomes drive an ever increasing number families below the poverty line. Poverty breeds desperation unfortunately...

At the risk of turning this into a serious thread (heaven forbid), not all poor people are chain-smoking alky's with 100 inch tellies and full SKY packages. Some of us have the where-with-all to manage our finances, that's not to say times ain't hard however. If it ever gets so bad that selling the system leads to getting us out of a hole I wouldn't hesitate, it'd be out the door in a heartbeat...
Dave, I hardly think that you can put yourself into the same category as those zoomers in Wrexham. You may not be rolling in it, but I suspect that you're no poorer than any of the idiots shown in that BBC footage.
Having had a business in Wrexham for the last 14 years, and getting to know the town and its people rather well (despite what you may think, it's largely a thriving town and the biggest in North Wales), I can tell you that the majority of the idiots in that Pound shop would've been the relatively well off looking for something for (next to) nothing! :rolleyes:

Lol - I'm not saying that some of them wouldn't have been genuinely poor, but let's just say that experience of living and doing business here has taught me the 'Wrexham mentality', and it's not one I generally get on with or relate to. It probably explains why most of my friends live in Cheshire! ;)
I'll give you an example... One of my Italian friends, who's a successful businessman in the area (running a chain of hairdressing salons), and also a local councillor, decided to open up a beautiful delicatessen in town, and stocked it full of the finest Italian meats and chesses, fresh crusty loaves and ciabatta, and all sorts of gorgeous goodies - everything was done to the highest standards.
It lasted about 10 months before he had to close it, as it just wasn't paying. It was considered by the locals as 'too fancy and full of foreign muck'. In its place a tearoom opened up, selling half-decent cakes, chips and pies. The place is crowded out every day...
Let's just say that your average Wrexham person has rather basic tastes, a lack of adventure and imagination, and a innate desire to obtain something for nothing!

Nah, he knows Wrexham folk as well as I do. It was an attempt to 'educate' the palate of the locals, and tempt them to be a bit more adventurous! Sadly, it failed, but it wasn't disastrous, as it was a predetermined exercise in 'speculate to accumulate' :)
The market you refer to wouldn't have interested him one iota. Ironically, the clients in his hair salons, whilst not being fans of 'fancy delicatessens' don't have any problem stumping up for expensive hair-doos!!

Having experienced the wares of a very good Italian deli in Kettering not so many moons ago I can tell you I would have been amongst his clientele if I lived in Wrexham, it was one big 'nom-nom-nom' shop for me. The family who ran it were lovely and allowed customers to taste their wares before parting with any cash, a rare thing these days. I had my first taste of genuine Parmigiano-Reggiano there and it is exquisite, I have not bought a tub of 'smelly socks' granulated Parmesan since... ;)

Seconded! I was accused of being "too posh to live round ere" when my answer to what I was having for dinner was Moussaka! Guilty as charged I guess? Totally agree about the lack of good food suppliers too, have resorted to returning to my old Butcher, 100 mile round trip's a bit excessive but need's must, Wrexham Sausage Championships, do me a favour!
Lol - you've noticed it, too? It does my head in! Trying to drag them out of the dark ages is a thankless task...
Btw, for a quality butchers, try Hugh John Jones, in Henblas street (with the old-fashioned bicycle outside). His lamb, beef (and especially Gloucester Old Spot pork) are to die for!! :)

Yes, the conversation started with "What's that in your trolley", to which I replied "An Aubergine."
Thanks for the recommendation, tried HJJ, agreed his lamb is very good but I don't really eat that much Pork, his beef is good, but I prefer my old Butcher's with the exception of Rib Eye, HJJ has some of the best Rib Eye, I've ever had:). I'm more of a poultry guy and everywhere round here tends to stock Bicks Chicks, Freerange? Unlikely! I go to Lewis' Farm Shop in Eyton, which has a nice selection and stocks Chicken from the same farm as my old Butcher, which is actually in a place called Llandinam some 65 miles away. Tim's (Fish and Game Merchant opposite Tesco) was good but now sadly gone, had a great selection of fish, amazing Wild Boar Sausages, and exotic meats, just regret not trying more, maybe I've been in Wrx too long :eek:.
