Why "Not MOV thank goodness."?
I've been very impressed with the stuff I have on that particular label.

WRT The Nightfly, I have a very nice and clean first press from 1982, mastering by Robert Ludwig.
It would be very difficult to improve on it, yet I'm partially seduced by the promise of a better sound ...

In house mastering DMM system that will only deal with digital files. The Warner Nightfly is at least done on the BG tube mastering system (even if from digital tape). MOV pressings are high quality but to me have a certain in house digital sound which can be especially annoying for older analogue recordings. More so if you are familiar with the original pressing. I stick to buying only 90s and 00s recordings from the MOV label unless produced from lacquers supplied from a known outside mastering house (60s Dylan titles).

We use the best audio available to cut our records. We receive and use different kinds of masters: analogue tapes, original metal parts, lacquers cut from analogue tapes and high res digital files 192/96khz/24 bit. Music On Vinyl does not use CD's as masters.

The Nighfly is an all digital recording, mix and mastering, preceding CD.
Ironic really, considering that it came out on vinyl first.
The only thing you could say about the original vinyl is that a digital delay line was used to control the cutter head's journey across the laquer.

Email them and ask about a few titles sources. Mostly they will say from 24/96 files. Old metal parts and analogue (external mastering) are the exception. Granted they don't use CDs so they aren't the pits like companies such as Plain and Vinyl Lovers. I doubt any of the reputable labels are using a CD as source any more.

Paul, you are indeed on the money. I was totally mistaken. I recently bought a batch of albums some from MOV and others merely heavy vinyl. The Nightfly is the one you pointed out. It's still bloody good though. With regards to the MOV titles, i am unsure of you findings but i am very pleased with miy haul of MOV titles notably Moving Waves (Focus) Moonmadness and Snowgoose (Camel) all terrific.

If you had an original Moving Waves on the Blue Horizon label you might not be so enthusiastic. I emailed MOV after buying it and they confirmed it's from digital and you can tell. It's maddening as I expected them to have access to the masters for Dutch bands. My rule is to only buy MOV if it's as rare as hens teeth / very expensive for originals or it's post 1990 and likely to be digitally recorded (or originals cut with digital delay). Many 90's recordings are all analogue still so an AAA reissue is welcome. The recent all analogue reissue of the first Gomez album shows up how bad many contemporary remasters and most 90's recordings are. The Nightfly reissue is a lot better for not being a MOV release. In fact it's from one of the best mastering houses and pressing plants.

I have a copy that I bought back when the record was released but it's wrecked frankly.

I have what I think is the same version, and it says on the inner sleeve "recorded and mixed entirely on 3M digital 32 track and 4 track machines at Soundworks Digital Audio/Video Recording Studios, N.Y......"

I personally have never had a bad experience with Music on Vinyl (admittedly only a handful of purchases) so I would be interested to see the difference in sound.
