Please help me out and jot down which in your opinion are your best 5 LP's purely on a sound quality basis so I can add some
to my collection for demos etc, much appreciated if as many can post as possible before the end of February when the Bristol
Show begins. If they are totally un-obtainable (if you know that for sure) no need to put them on your list, thanks. :)

Hunky Dory first to third pressings

Ziggy Stardust E matrixes (6 & 4 I think).

Any KOB up to about 1964 but the Columbia six eye mono is 'The One'.

Everyone Digs Bill Evans repress

John Martyn Solid Air

I've seen the six eye stereo version of KOB going for £500+ btw, the pressing plant should be no 4 on both versions

Thelma Houston on Sheffield Lab.

' I've got the Music in Me '. It was a limited direct-cut pressing and only so many were pressed.
It is possible to obtain a copy, usually from the USA. Someone over there bought a few copies upon its release, and puts them on the market occasionally.

I purchased two in Sheffield in the late '70s, for £9.00 each. You can, I understand, buy it on CD, made from the back-up Master tape.

I dread to think what it sounds like...

David, a few suggestions

OneZero - Nitin Sawhney - 45 direct cut - which you've got !!

Emily Barker & Red Clay Halo / Dear River - Linn. You also get a high res (24/192 I think) download so you can demo against each other.

Blur - Parklife - from 21 reissue.

Dire Straits 78-91 box set (and pretty good value)

I have found that virtually all the Music on Vinyl (http://www.musiconvinyl.com/) pressings are excellent, for example Miles Davis' 'Kind of Blue' is a good demo album.

Naim and Linn's redcordings on LP are also very high quality, as you would expect.

MOV lp's are mostly digital sourced and frankly not where I would go for anything recorded analogue. Pressing quality is very good though and they are a no brainer for titles from the 90's onwards that had a very limited release originally. I would suggest the Classic Records issue for Kind Of Blue but it is OOP and expensive.

As an aside, this site gives some background as to why it was a good idea to remaster the original recording, and I agree with their conclusion that this is a superb recording:

Only one that I'd really single out as a stunningly good recording. It's a live recording of an excellent jazz band in a Stockholm pub, and for recreating an atmosphere, as well as the dynamics of the instruments, there nothing to touch it. The vibes in I'm Confessin' are simply there, in front of you. If there's one thing I'd like to hear on Dom's new cartridge, it's this!

Nina Simone Live at Townhall is good sound wise, personally I'm not that impressed with the content, but Elton John said it is his favourite album ever which was the reason I bought it.

Of course mine is a re-press (4 men with beards) and no doubt Elton's copy is a first pressing or similar.

Tell you what though, Roy Orbison's in dreams the greatest hits produced by David Lynch and T Bone Burnett is stunning.

Sinatra at the Sands is a great shout too, I've the mono version and it really is top class although my copy is a bit noisy.

One lp that really surprised me with regards sound quality when I got it was Katrina & The Waves S/T album. It sounds quite hard-hitting, attacking and "rocky"!

What about 12" singles, if you can get them? Three favourites that come to mind are: 10,000 Maniacs - Eat For Two. Prefab Sprout - Cars And Girls. Linda Rondstant - Blue Buyou.

The La Folia vinyl is best on the original Harmonia Mundi but they are very hard to find and not cheap. There is an almost comparable pressing on ATR. There is also a pressing on Speakers Corner, which looks like the one on Harmonia Mundi, and which is the one I gave Dom. It is the worst of the three due to some surface noise and slightly lower quality.

FWIW, these are among the Divinity of very few records in the list by Salvatore Rubio, all of which that I have acquired are simply superb. However, some of them are getting hard to find and are very expensive.

Good for you. I think the 1982 version is the best but the ATR is very good.

Unlike the other posters, I'm not enthused about the music on the Jamie Newton record. In fact, I would be willing to sell mine if somebody wants it.

Regarding Paniagua, what was also on the Divinity list was the Musique de la Grece Ancienne, which is reconstructions of ancient Greek music from the few remnants of notation that are left on musical instruments that they built according to pictures of what they looked like. I think it is absolutely superb. As a result, I have ended up buying that and almost all the other records they ever made, and love them all. These old records only seem to come up from Spanish sources in Discogs, and often have slight surface noise. Paniagua stopped recording a few years ago but is still well known in Spain.

Another one on the Divinity list which is superb is a recording of Tibetan bells by Prevencer, which comes up in Discogs about once every month or two, and which is of equal quality. But it is sounds rather than music. Beautiful, haunting sounds.

Scott can you be kind enough to list on AOS as of today/tomorrow what you have IN STOCK in your house vinyl wise, I for one would buy more but based on my very first order which you showed on your site as being in stock but wasn't leaves a bit of a sore taste, others have said the same, so list away and providing you ship same/next day I will place some orders, what I don't like is things advertised that are not in stock, yes we all run out of things from time to time, I do myself, I sell mofi label records but usually work to wish lists these days as it's impossible for me to spend hours listing all the available vinyl on my site, but I let customers know within a couple of days if I don't have stock of anything listed, same goes for the clearaudio titles too. thanks :)

Which edition of the Red Album? If it's an original 1973 will sound rather better. They did a DMM remaster around 1993 and I believe there is a current version which may not use the new remastered sources? Same would go for Blue album.

Paul, both the Red and the Blue were bought new by me before CD replay came out, so that would place them around the late 70's and I guess ties in with your statement of why they sound the way they do. Didn't know that. I always thought the Red seemed to have a slight edge on the Blue, but with this new knowledge I'm going to listen more critically and see.

David,

Are you looking for records to show of systems with good dynamics, texture and a good mix of frequencies? If so there are some that have been favs of mine for years and they are also good tunes.

Classical Kyung-Wha Chung Beethoven Violin Concerto D Major, Op.61. This was one of the first DDA recordings using Decca's newly invented system that recorded on uMatic video recorders. It has great range and textures and in '79 Kyung-Wha Chung's fluidity had to be heard to be believed.

Billy Joel 52nd Street. The brass on this is ethereal and so is thevocal timbre, cooking tunes as well.

Supertramp Crime of the Century a good pressing of this, especially the MoFi half speed mastered one....WOW! Slam, pace, texture, excitment, it's got it all and a fine record to boot.

Jazz masterpieces are endless, Miles, Coltrane, Monk etc. All with Great SQ. Pick one and for me it would be Coltrane's Blue Train.

For a modern recording I would go for Stephen Dale Petit's new one Cracking the Code. This is an analogue recording with tremendous verve and excitement. It is a history of the blues in one record. It has guests ranging from Patrick Carney from the Black Keys, Ex-Stone Mick Taylor, Dr. John, Chris Barber and Hubert Sumlin, Howlin' Wolf's guitarist. . In fact, Sumlin died just thirteen days after the recording. It's anincredibly well put together album, a great listen and really shows of systems well.

Thanks for these recommendations.
I already owned the Seasick Steve recording on your recommendation, and it is quite good. And I've managed to find the Proprius on eBay in NM condition for 8 Euro plus shipping. It arrived today from France and is absolutely superb organ music. Highly recommended.

I also ordered the Ry Cooder and Tacet recordings from snvinyl. Unlike the dire predictions by a couple of people on this thread, Scott shipped them within 2-3 days and the Ry Cooder arrived today together with Gladiator that I ordered months ago. The Tacet is still in transit.

I like the Ry Cooder, although I don't think it is as good as Buena Vista Social Club live at Carnegie, where he also plays.

Unlike others who have been thrilled by Gladiator, and although I love old DCD recordings, I am very unenthused about Gladiator and would be very pleased to sell it on.

I also listened to Stimela on Hope by Hugh Masekela with your cartridge and it sounds wonderful. In contrast, some records don't seem to have unexplored secrets in them, e.g. a mid-70s Harvest pressing if Pink Floyd's DSOTM doesn't sound any better and in fact seems to be missing the extended trebles I'm hearing with some records.

Vinyl is fun.

I agree regarding Gladiator, don't get me wrong it's a fantastic recording and it does sound amazing however my own phono amp is away being modded and I'm using the phono stage in my Brio-R and to me the music seems congested.

I was at Scott's picking up Gladiator and I bought Dead Can't Dance-Into the Labyrinth from him too which, to my ears, on my system, is far better than Gladiator but I'll hold off making a judgement until I get my phono stage back but Gladiator will be getting moved on if it doesn't sound much better.

Perhaps you need a really top quality system to get the bes out of that record?

BTW, I apologise for making flippant remarks about Scott, I've had a few dealings with him now and I can't say enough about him and also his genuine hospitality but Scott knows I was joking and has taken no offence, I hope.

If anyone gets a chance and are able to go and pick up their orders directly from Scott then be prepared to empty your wallet cause the guy has some of the most incredible vinyl in stock and he certainly knows his onions in that regard plus his prices for top quality recordings are very reasonable IMO.

Dom's two other recommendations have arrived:

Faglarna Och Kallorna, Proprius PROP7742 (eBay)

Four Seasons, Tacet label from Germany all tube recording (Scott Nangle)

Both are super recordings but the Tacet recording is particularly good.

+1. Undoubtedly the best way to get the full 'Nangle experience' is to visit the man on his home turf, especially if he's doing rolls in square sausage with broon sauce! ;)
