Technics plinth again...

Hi,
we had this topic around here somewhere and it was filled with a lot of information and some of it was not always related to plinths.

Finished plinths come from KAB and from Inspire-HiFi. They look really good but what bothers me is that they're build around the deck. I would
prefer a solution where the plinth replaces the rubber base. Now that would look great, wouldn't it. At the moment I'm hesistating to take my deck
apart and take a closer look at the possibilities because it's winter and I listen to records a lot. Of course, perhaps I'll strip the deck and set it on
some feet without the rubber base and plastic compound.

The questions that arise are:
- is it possible at all to fit a plint directly under the deck)
- how thick can the wooden panels be?
- how to add weight to the plinth?
- keep the plastic compound or not?

Of course a lot of design ideas come to mind. I would want to keep the stock feet, but slightly hidden behind the plinth which would imply that the bottom plate would be about
one or two centimeters before the actual bottom of it.

I really do like the look of both solutions from KAB and Inspire but unlike you, bothered most about the design, what bothers me is the price!

I appreciate there is good craftsmanship, but for example, looking at the Inspire design, there are just 5 pieces of wood joined together. All for a whopping £287 (plus postage). :eek:

I agree with you. The price is ridiculous. That's about 350 € without shipping. You can get the one or other decent vintage direct drive for that price. The KAB one is priced more moderately but you have the shipping cost from the US and customs to add and then it's not worth the hassle.

i have an inspire plinth on my techy. it's very nice, but i'd agree overpriced! (mine was part of a turntable i bought, never got it seperately)

however, there's no way i could make one, even if it is technically 5 pieces of wood, as i'm useless at DIY :)

It does look classy.

I'd imagine any competent joiner could make one, or indeed anyone with even the most modest DIY skills.

All you would need is to get the measurements of some kind soul who has already got one (mentioning no names!), source some wood from a local suppliers and they should be able to cut it for you (there are only 4 mitres and a couple of notches at the back, and a MDF bottom), then glue it together with Evo stick and finish in whatever stain/oil/varnish tickles your fancy.

Or am I making it sound easier than it actually is?

(Just looked online, you can buy 2 metres of most of the popular hardwoods like American Oak, Cherry etc for about £40 delivered.)

the inspire has sorbothane pods inside so you take the feet off the techy and rest it on those. it also has cutouts for the hinges on the rear.

happy to take some measurements if anybody wants them :)

If it were me, and I wanted a plinth, I would make it as just a surround.
I would want to keep my Isonoes and Techniboots.

Surely the plinth makes it awkward to level the deck?

Depends on the feet you put on the plinth I guess. But it could do. It is, essentially, just a surround.
You could leave enough space for the feet in the plinth rather than the sorbet have pods of course. When supplied by inspire I don't think they come with feet under the plinth.

If I were getting one made, I would perhaps be tempted to jazz it up ever so slightly, maybe with some fluting (a la LP12 dare I say) or some nice dovetail jointing on the corners.

I have in fact tonight emailed a local cabinet maker of an idea of prices.

I got a guide price off a local cabinet maker. I sent him the images of the KAB and Inspire as an idea of what I want.

He says I could either supply him with drawings or even better, he suggests, I could take the turntable in. Depending on the choice of wood, to supply, make and finish would be £150 to £180.

Seems reasonable to me. Something to consider as a birthday present!
