America is having a bad time with extreme winter conditions. Despite our forecasters saying it won't come here, there is definitely a tendency for bad weather in the US to arrive here about ten days later. Be prepared! I'm going to get extra shopping (and fuel) in this week. Bottled water should be considered too, as if we get anything approaching the temperatures in America the water mains will freeze. Thanks Mr weather expert there is sod all chance of a big freeze - US continental climate is rather different from us being close to the Atlantic. Forecasting technology has improved somewhat since Mr Fish in 1987.

Pah, bunch of softies! The place I come from is in the Guinness Book of Records as the coldest in the UK, - 27.6c. That was quite chilly. It's regularly minus 15 to 20 in the wintertime up there.

It is highly unlikely that we will get the sub-arctic temperatures that the eastern US states are currently experiencing because as the weather system travels across the Atlantic it will absorb heat from the the warm currents which emanate from the Caribbean. It may be very wet and windy though, but we should be used to that by now... ;)

I don't say it will happen, but I certainly think it could. I've seen it before, occasions of America having dreadful weather around this time of year and regardless of forecasters saying we wouldn't get it, a while later we did. Not to such extremes perhaps, but certainly very wintry.

I agree Geoff, it can and has happened in the past, for example in the winter of 2010, but unlike then the jetstream has not looped down over the Northeast Atlantic which is what is needed to bring the Arctic air down over Europe and thus carry the cold and heavy snow with it. Instead the jetstream is currently sitting in a deep loop over the mid-eastern United States hence why they are suffering record low temperatures. Just call me Tomasz Schafernaker... :D
