My local BS only closes for about 4 weeks , open 11 months of the year :D Deep joy ;)

The ground has high sand content and drains very well , it can rain heavy the day before and on Sunday its open and dry under foot

Lol - I get that... Up here, though, everyone is still snoozing at 6am, so it's pointless going to a boot sale at that time. The best one here is held in a massive field, and so like I said, if you arrived at 6am, the only 'customers' there at that time would be sheep! :D

So when you arrive at your local booty at 6am, it's already a hive of activity?

Lol! I just need my sleep - always have done. I need the same amount of sleep now as I did when I was a teenager. My first post to Al here, at 9.30am was not long after I had gotten up, having gone to bed last night at 10pm....

I'm also a *very* deep sleeper (slept through our burglar alarm going off once), so even when I (eventually) wake up, it takes me a good hour or so after that to fully 'come alive' (usually after having drunk a large mug of strong cappuccino)!! :eyebrows:

At 3.18am, you'd need a tazer gun to awaken me (maybe)!!!

And no, I'm NOT a 'morning person' either... I hate cheery fookers, who are full of beans first thing in the morning, (as grumpy and bleary-eyed I try to come into focus with the world)!! :D

Marco (sleep rocks).

Macca
23-02-2014, 10:10
I'm the same I need my 8 hours minimum. Seems to be seasonal dependant though, in the depths of winter 10 hours is more like it. In France in the olden days the peasants would hibernate during winter, only getting up for a bit of cheese and wine on occasion. And a slash as well, if they were anything like me that is.

Marco
23-02-2014, 10:18
Nah, I sleep right through. I'm not at the 'old man' stage yet of needing to get up in the wee small hours for a pish (unless I've had lots to drink the night before).

Have you tried Tena for men? :D

I do like a wee nap in the afternoon sometimes, though, especially if its one of those dark and rainy days, where it never gets light, or after a rather boozy lunch (this can also happen in the summer, when lying out in the garden, after scoffing some top scran and a bottle or so of Chianti)... :eyebrows:

I had to look up Tena - and you know what strangely enough I have never tried them...

I've generally always had lots to drink the night before hence the old man issue...when I had the cat he would always wake me up about 3am anyways for his middle of the night feed so I could kill two birds with one stone.

x2  l am getting to the point in my life where l actually look forward to going to bed.

Lol... It's not so much a case of looking forward to going to bed, just that around 10pm my eyes get heavy and I start to nod off, so when that happens, it's upstairs to bo-bos! For me, it's a natural process. If I want to stay up later than that, then I'll have a wee nap in the afternoon. I find that this really refreshes you :)

Consequently, I'm usually at my 'most awake' from about 3-8pm.

Marco.

Marco

I don't drink at all (or eat) before going to bed, except perhaps for having a glass of water, and especially if you mean alcohol. That's a total no-no :nono:

I like to stay healthy, and that means drinking plenty of (good) fluids, at the right times, eating well (at the right times), and most of all, getting plenty of sleep... That's what keeps you feeling (and looking) young!!

As for cats, we've got three of them, and they all sleep with us on the bed. They're quite happy sleeping there until we get up, which is when they are fed - and not before. If you get them used to eating at inappropriate times, you'll simply become a martyr to their whims!

Marco
23-02-2014, 11:51
I don't think I could handle working during the night, as it totally f*cks with your natural sleeping pattern.

I believe that Al also works at night? I suspect that that is no coincidence why his sleeping is so disturbed, especially his natural 'body clock', which consequently won't allow him to lie-in when he's not working ;)

I've seen it too with taxi drivers and other folks who work night shifts - they always look knackered! But, hey, you gotta do what ya gotta do........

Marco.

brian2957

I'd never done nightshift in my life Marco until I started this new job at the tender age of 52 :) and it totally does me in . You're right though ( I have to do 3 month stints ) it does come with the job I'm afraid.

I went on permanent nights once because it was quite a lot more money. Thought I would get used to it after a couple of weeks but months later I was still tired and zoned out all the time. like being on drugs but not good drugs. I mentioned it to a bloke who had been on nights for donkey's and he said 'oh yeah the first couple of years are the hardest'. I packed that lark in double quick after that. The other thing I hated about it was that when everyone is finishing you are just starting. Really hard in the summer when you have to walk past the pub on your way in and all the day workers are lolling in the beer garden enjoying a pint after knocking off.

That's it in a nutshell, and trust me, it ain't healthy....

Although I'm not a 'morning person', when I worked for other people, I always preferred when the job allowed me to start as early as possible, so in turn I could FINISH as early as possible. I used to love it in a few of the sales jobs I had where, as long as you hit your targets, you could virtually work your own hours, and often from home!

Consequently, I would knock my pan in and/or 'work smart', rather than hard (as they say 'in the trade'), whichever was more effective for a given situation, and hit my targets early, which would often mean starting work at 6am, but finishing at 3pm - and sometimes having an extra day off! That was a good feeling.

I used to hate it, though, when there were meetings on that occurred at night, and so meant that by the time they were finished, you weren't getting home until 7-8pm...

Nightmare... I don't think I could handle that.

No, I like to get what I need to do, done, ASAP, and then enjoy the rest of the day, where I'm free to relax! Nowadays, of course, working for myself and being semi-retired, relaxing occurs rather more frequently than working! :eyebrows:

As they say, you're a long time dead, so life is for living, not working yourself into an early grave......

Its our annual Festival of the Cornelles this weekend - cornelles are a triangular biscuit - and the whole town gets taken over with stalls selling who knows what. If you think the Brit boots are pishanto, you should try the French version.

Just three boxes of Lps in the whole place!! Most were total crap but there was one box hidden away under the table that revealed a few surprises. The Brandenburgs and Rodrigo are versions I haven't heard before and the Berlioz is still in its plastic wrap!! I had to pay €1 for the Bach and 50 centimes each for the others!!

I was only in town to get my sunday croissants but as I had to walk in to get them because of the parking restrictions, it was worth having a look round, normally I get tired of the tatt after a few stalls but I'm glad I looked.

PS...hard luck Allen

Good day for me, picked up this stack of vinyl for the princely sum of £20.20. Always a good day when you measure the amount of vinyl bought in inches!

12055

11 x Albums, 24 x 80's 12" Singles I'm sure many of which fall into the Pishanto category but as I was born in 79, I surely can't be judged on the musical taste I had whilst in Primary School . All sat atop the fully working Celestion 44's I picked up on Saturday for £111.00.

Also picked up this unknown item for £3.

12056

I don't have a clue what it is so some research required, but either way with a new faceplate a bargain steel enclosure!

Hi Darren,

It's what it says on the tin, in the late 70s some cassette decks had a timer facility. when you left then set when the mains came on they would start in record mode. Great if like me you wanted to hear the Peel show but was normally out gigging when it was on :) Don't know wht it would work with now but most just controlled the mains.

DarrenHW
13-04-2014, 17:54
Hi Paul,

Yes that is certainly what it seems, just gave it a google and found a rather informative you tube video, then plugged it in and had a play, it does seem to be functioning correctly. It would be very useful for cassette recording but my Technics RS-AV7 has a real time clock I have no need for that, it could also be used as you say time recordings, turn your system into an alarm clock, or set the sleep mode / off timer if say for example indulging in a bottle of red (other sleep inducing beverages are available) during late night listening.

Personally I think I'll use it just as a HiFi inspired clock, I do love the look of it :).

I spy Sonic Temple by The Cult.....play loud.

Roger that! Only had chance to listen to Pearl Jam (which came from the same seller) and it played without fault, can't agrue with that for less than £1 each! It was the first album I've listened to on the Celestion 44's and I'm a very happy boy! I notice from your sig that you have 66's and a Quad 44/405 combo, I plan on hunting down a Quad 44/405 would you say they are good partners?

johnB
14-04-2014, 07:56
Hi Darren

Yes the 66s work well with the Quad 44/405. The amps have been great servants to me for over 20 years.
Whilst I was having the power-amp recapped etc ( it's 41 years old!) I subbed in a CA850 with a Croft Micro basic pre-amp for phono stage which has the benefit of a remote control......so when I get a free weekend I thought I'd try to conclude which I like best.
Good luck with the 66s....looks like you live in same town as Marco who also runs a pair.

Cheers
john

Hi Tim,

Yes, it was after hearing Marco's 66's that I started chasing 44's as 66's are out of my budget at the moment. I have been interested in the Quad 405 for a while now as it seems like a real second hand bargain even after the cost of servicing. The CA850 seems to be quite popular on here but they seem pretty rare second hand and the new 851A is something like £1200:eek:. It is a good looking amp though, but that really is lowest on my priority list. My current plan is to start off with the Quad 44 and then build a First Watt B1 with (I'm sure much to everyone's horror) a remote volume pot :sofa:. I'm sure I'll be dubbed a heretic (or worse) but as far as I'm concerned music is all about enjoyment and relaxation and getting up and down all night to adjust the volume detracts from my enjoyment and relaxation. If I can just drop on a 405 at a carboot that will be a very good Sunday morning indeed!

Cheers,

nat8808
19-04-2014, 01:40
Nothing wrong with a remote volume control! Just depends how it's done - If you still want to keep your pre-amp as pure as possible, get a cheap remove control car and turn it into a remote via a rubber band around the volume knob.

Not boot sale but charity shop, Cambridge A1 SE Mk3, Cambridge CD4 and a pair of Gale Gold limited edition mini monitors all for 40 squids with 2x 2mtrs of 'orrible Gale speaker cable and a wet string inter connect thrown in  No HF on one channel proved to be one on the bi-wiring jumpers being loose, all now perfect. Hooked up with Black Rhodium twist and Van den Hul D300 inter connects it all sounds fine. :). The speakes have a chamber for mass loading, I may give this a go later.

Not quite boot sale, in fact this was rescued from being thrown in the skip at the local tip.
It's a Pioneer SA-540 integrated amp, in perfect working order. OK not the best sq, but ripe for improvement, particularly the phono stage.

Lastly some mint condition Carl Zeiss Jena binoculars 10 x 50 with a mint condition case , The old couple were just putting them on the table as I walked past , One look and I gave them the asking price , The lady said they purchased them new in 1966 and thinks they cost nearly £100 pounds then  seem rather pricy for 1966 but who am I to disagree , she also said they only used them for the annual holidays and stopped taking them about 30 years ago as neither of them wanted to carry them around all day , they were then retired into a draw at home , They are very sharp and clear in use , When I am next in the valeeys I can keep an eye on Marco and the sheep

Not bad hauls I guess.... although you could also buy these things from ebay at the same or cheaper prices.. I guess it's all about being there with your car in the first place.

They are indeed Rigonda and look to be the speakers that came originally with the Bolshoi radiogram.

Vey nice three way speakers that benefit greatly from a bit of wadding inside (not too much, mind...) and a re-wire. Be VERY carefully with the volume control when you play them, though, as the amplifier in the matching radiogram was only 4W per channel and they can't take much power.

Go on, ask me how I know...:(

No, I've never worked for Lasky's - my exposure to Rigonda came when I acquired a pair of the Symphony radiogram's loudspeakers at university and was impressed with them (until my 60wpc amp blew one of the bass drivers, anyway!). I have then duly dabbled with the Symphony radiogram, the Party Time record players and the Marksman Unit Audio system, and still have a Bolshoi radiogram in storage which is all fettled and will be up for sale once I put it all back together.

The one unit I've never seen, though, is a Victoria, which was a later transistorised radiogram featuring a decent transcription turntable with MM cartridge - as you probably know, all the units I've listed have a rather basic deck with a ceramic cartridge.

So what's the Bolshoi/budgie story, then?

Oh well Adam I don't think you missed out :) part of my job at JVC was teaching Lasky's staff what all the JVC innovations did to help them sell it. This normally meant me travelling to some god forsaken city oop north and talking to a room full of glaze eyed salesmen who just wanted to get to the beer and sandwiches

The budgie story goes that an old lady bought from Lasky's said Rigonda radiogram and placed her pet budgie's cage on top. She goes out and the bird kicks over it's water which runs into the Bolshoi, causes a short and the inevitable fire. The Budgie having been duly toasted, the lady wrote to Lasky's to ask what they were going to do about it. The late Dave Potts, who some on here may remember as the sales office manager at JVC and who was to customer relations what Harold Shipman was to elderly care, had a miniature wreath 2 inches across made and sent it off to her.

Out of all the gear that came from JVC and that I ever had a chance to play with, only three still stick in my mind as desirable. I can't remember the model numbers any more unfortunately. Never bought JVC stuff, even though their head office was just ten minutes walking from my place. I worked for the Lasky's service department by the way, so I knew a bit more about what and which brands to avoid.

Can't think of many I'd be interested in...

The charity shops in the North West of England and in Wales are full of vinyl, and we have nice fresh, pollution-free air, few traffic problems, non-ridiculously inflated living costs, and beautiful countryside, too! ;)

Marco.

I guess that's ok if you like driving a 10s of miles to do anything and have a nice hobby to keep you entertained at home (as we all do!) ! Fresh air would be nice but I do like London and all the millions of varied things going on, the potential social life (nice to have it there if you decide to use it!) - I even enjoy going on public transport and like big buildings.. Just a few too many people looking in the same vinyl racks, especially at the weekend.

Trouble is Stan, Lasky's didn't take any of the high end stuff that JVC made except for a few bits for the flag ship store in Tottenham Court Road where they also had things like a JBL Paragon horn system. Whereas our budget stuff like the JAS11G amp, KD10 cdeck etc were good for the money, the mid range was good but not that special. When you got up to the real flagship stuff, like the QL10 TT, Zero range speakers, p3030/t3030/m3030 amps and tuners and the top cassette decks it was damn fine stuff, the KD-A8 was the first to use metal cassette tape, add tothat the auto self biasing and it was a cut above the rest. :) I have fond memories of running the dealer showroom as part of my "empire" at Priestly Way, these people paid me toplay with HiFik all day

Its in very good condition ( apart from the fine layer of boot sale dust ) , Was a bit apprehensive as to it working when I returned home

Popped in 4 new batteries and it works , motor drive , internal meter , Battery compartment clean as a whistle , lens clear and clean

Will see it I can get a new light seal kit for it

Result for £5 including a rather beaten up leather bag ( that must have kept it protected )

I intend to put a roll of film in it and see what happens :)

Rather please with the purchase :)

What about a DAC? That is both analogue and digital. I think the rule should be that you cannot photograph it at all, you have to draw it with crayons.

Update on these - under the standard layer of car boot sale dust, the cassette deck is immaculate (even the belts were fine) and it just needed a spot of lubrication on the bracket that engages fast forward or rewind as this initially didn't. The tuner is equally healthy (although was filthy and needed harder scrubbing) and has a superb mechanically-based preset system giving 5 on FM and 5 on LW that I could play with for hours!

Will try and do some listening tonight and snap a picture or two.

Great day at the carboot for me yesterday, primarily went to sell and moved on a large amount of pishanto (some of which has featured on previous posts in this thread) so I have some space in the hallway to fill up with more carboot finds!

Had a quick walk around in between selling and stumbled across these, not mint but in pretty good condition:

Couldn't believe my luck, I've been after a pair of these to use as a centre speaker since borrowing Marco's a few months ago. Hooked one up last night and it completes the Celestion family very nicely (Celestion Ditton 44's both front and rear). Only had time for a few test pieces and watched the very disappointing 47 Ronin but initial impressions are very positive. Now time to sell my existing Q Acoustics package and invest in a new sub!

Darren,

The 15XR's work very well with a few simple tweeks. The XO is a doddle to rebuild and adding a little extra dampening improves the base no end. I'd also replace the crappy binding posts. An internal rewire with something a bit thicker than the crap that's in them also helps no end.

Hi Andy,

Thanks for the info, I do intend on modding these in the future when I start working on the 44's, there's a thread on DIYAudio where a guy has replaced the ABR with another Mid/Bass which is certainly interesting. Having two speakers and only using one will also be very helpful in gauging what different the mods make, I do have some questions but to avoid drifting this thread too far I'll start a new thread on the 15 XR's when I have the time to start working on them.

So far I am very happy with them, they're a significant improvement over the Q Acoustics centre they've replaced (which before joining AoS I simply would not have believed possible out of sheer ignorance), they bring so much more focus to the front end (Left, Right & Centre) not to mention the increased drive by running the receiver at a lower crossover point.

Cheers,

I don't have any plans for after I pass on, seems a bit pointless to me making plans for when I am no longer in existence. The here and now is what matters and if buying a stupid record makes me enjoy the here and now a bit more then I am going to buy a stupid record. I suppose I could just keep the money instead and swim around in it like Scrooge McDuck. Not a bad idea, actually...

Why do people endlessly keep buying LP's ? I will not buy another album now ever, I have no need to apart from being a totally & utterly boring tedious & expensive exercize, far from the pleasure people seem to make it out to be.

However instead of buying an album to store away & never play just for the sake of owning it, i got a better idea why not store the money away just for the sake of owning it.. I would rather have a stash of dosh than a stash of records that im never gonna play or at least once in a blue moon.

So then what you got planned for all your pointless LP's collections when you pass on. Your Kids won't be interested, they will probably sell them on anyway. A Total & utter waste of money that's what, infact it is a prime example of dead money imho..

I got shut of a hell of a lot of surplus Records & Hi-Fi which i realised was dead money.

However people generally have other motives like bragging about big collections.

;)

What happens if you have a whole pile of money and then get bored with it?

That's a very nice find.

Incidentally, my wife and I will be staying with relatives next Saturday night within spitting distance of the big car boot sale on the A3 near Guildford. Clearly I shall have to battle through the hangover that is pretty much guaranteed on Sunday morning, in order to visit it!

Hi John

When I said it works all I did was power it up press FF / FR and play , until its cleaned and service I don't want to risk damaging anything so have not had a listen yet

Will do in the future when its ready ;)

Always a gamble buying used gear especially from a booty sale.If you are no good with electronic leave well alone it's not worth it no matter how tempted you are. At the end of the days clobber this old will always need service.. Never liked those 600 series. The Silver/Purple 400's are my fav.

I know mate its always a gamble but i thought for a £1 it was worth a go but am slowly learning and just have to get round that the stuff i have is fine & more then capable of a fine sound :) its a shame but no point in it staying although in nice nick i would rather someone not touch it that knows even less then me..

Don't bin the Armstrong, Dan - it's a nice unit!

Went to the big A3 car boot sale today - no hifi worth getting excited over but I did buy a box of 50 or so singles for £3. It was the copy of Kylie's "I should be so lucky" and the four Shakin' Stevens records that swung it....

I've got the Queen album on CD but it sounds so much better on vinyl. Plus it included Bohemian Rhapsody/These are the days of our lives on 45. £5.
The second one I bought as much for an historical record (aahhh...awful pun) as anything. In glorious mono for £2.

Mint copies of Queen II go for excess for £50 so thats a good deal i have my copy but has a slight warp but plays fine and agree it sound better on vinyl like for instance the other day i played one vision on CD and was a bit pants played it on vinyl and the scale and depth of the drums is more precise being a drummer myself i pick these things up if their not right. also LOVE QUEEN did you watch the days of our lifes on BBC4 last night most excellent.
