I have just fitted an Audio Origami modified RB251 to my SL1200. I have read about the synergy issues of a Rega arm with a Techie, but not having the budget to buy an SME V right now (other priorities), I thought I would give it a go when a good deal came up on an ex-demo arm. It blows my stock Techie arm out of the water. The deck is more musical, has faster, punchier bass and fantastic sound staging. The treble is more defined at the higher frequencies.
However, there is a minor problem....
It came with a 165g counterweight, and my Nagaoka MP-150 weighs in at a hefty 6.5.
Obviously this means that the tonearm spends most of it time pointing skywards. Being impatient, I have added 9g of mass (washers) to the headshell to set the stylus load to 1.6g.
As this is a bit Heath Robinson, I need to replace the 165g counterweight with a lighter version. I am guessing that a 100g counterweight would be the one to go for?
I have dropped J7 @ Audio Origami a mail, so I am sure I will get some feedback pretty soon, but I have a question.
Will a tungsten weight make any difference? Shoild I go for a low slung, or concentric type weight? Do they make a difference to the sound, or is it just more marketing hype?
As I already have the AO stub, I don't fancy swapping it out for a Michell Technoweight, unless it will make a massive difference!
