Question regarding turntable distance from preamp

Hi guys, I would really appreciate some advice from anyone that has some knowledge/opinion on this?

Due to layout of our living room and the other half(!) I need to position my turntable approx 7 meters from the pre amp. Will having a 7meter interconnect between preamp be a problem?

My set up is:
Project Debut Turntable
Meridian 603 preamp
Radford st15 power amp
celestion ditton 15xr speakers

A 7m long interconnect between TT and preamp doesn't sound ideal to me. Why does it have to be so long?

I would use a phono head amo at the turntable and run 7m from that to a line in on the preamp if you have to run 7m. You will need a 7m earth as well as shielded ic's

I would put the preamp close to the TT and run a 7m pair of phono leads from the preamp to the STA15. The signal from your cartridge is minute compared to the output from your preamp. Hence you will lose less quality with a long run from pre-power.

I always had my set-up under the stairs and run long speaker cables, but now that I've finish decorating the living room, I've move my amplifier to the living room and run long interconnecting cables (9mts) between the phonostage and amplifier.

Long interconnecting cables may be quite expensive unless you are willing to make a set.

You have a choice of screen or coax cable.

Screen cable usually has a high capacitance 100-250pf/mtr.
Coax cable usually has a low capacitance 35-90pf/mtr.

I've always used Belden 1478 coax cable with a stranded core which had little or no impact on the sound (for me anyway).
As I've now run out and no longer available unless you want a 1000mtrs, I had to find alternative coax which had a similar specification and found this at Maplins.

Hello Paul,

Since you list no other source than the TT, there are only two options available (both of which have been suggested):

(1) Move the preamp close to the TT and run long interconnects between the preamp and the power amp;

(2) Use a phonostage with the TT and run long interconnects back to the line input of your preamp (e.g. the tuner input). There are several excellent phonostages available, some of which are relatively inexpensive (e.g. the NAD model). I believe Project themselves make a phonostage, though I'm not sure of the cost.

You don't say what cartridge you are using. Is it a moving coil or a fixed coil type?

Hi Barry why the tuner input or does it not matter which input you use on the amp/preamp?

Reason I ask is because I have a phono stage going into a line input (aux) of my integrated and also have a tuner.

It was an "eg", an example of a line input. All the line inputs are the same, just designated differently - tuner, tape, CD, Line etc. You can use any of them and in your case, carry on as you have done.
