There's a new Ortofon super cart on the block... dedicated to the opera singer Anna Netrebko.

Nude Ortofon Replicant 100 tip, boron cantilever, very similar compliance to my Spu Royal N, which has the same diamond cut too - the Royal N cantilever is lowly gold plated aluminium! The GM Royal II is boron I think...
Anna has a higher trackability;)

The Anna price - £4,999.99! Oh well - it's looks nice and would fit my Fidelity Research massy headshell a treat - but, dream on Steve...

It'll have a different sound, for sure, compared with the SPU Royal GM MKII that you should be buying instead.... ;)

In general, (Cadenza range and 2M Black aside), I find Ortofon's 'normal' cartridges, especially the top models, rather too 'hi-fi sounding'. They're probably very 'accurate', though.

If you want a 'modern' version of the SPU, (direct mounting and all), why not go for the Ortofon Xpression?

I sulked for a week when Henley Designs finally asked for their review sample back. :(

Yeah, Adam, good shout... I'd love to hear the Xpression, as it ticks right boxes for me. It's one of the few modern cartridges that would tempt me away from my SPU :)

How would you describe its inherent sonic signature and way of music-making?

At some point, however, I intend to invest in one of these chaps, as I heard one at one of the Whittlebury shows, on a T/T I know quite well, and it blew me away (the dynamics and sheer 'attack' were incredible)....

It's funny really as it's one of those cartridges that would be easy to dismiss with a quick listen as it appears to have no initial "wow" factor. The more you listen, though, you realise it really is utterly beguiling, with an even-handedness that simply seems to add no particular character to the music. I was incredibly impressed by its sheer clarity, openness and sweetness.

I read something similar in a review about the Ortofon Jubilee being even handed almost laid back and how suddenly when a part or instrument / section played it would remind you of how good it was.

Neo magnet in the xpression. Not usually a fan either in cartridges or speakers.

The current Ortofon SPUs also use neodymium magnets:http://www.audiorevelation.com/cre/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=166&products_id=1202
