... As it is today :eyebrows: Thought it about time I started another one of these since my very silly "I'm giving up on hifi and can live with a Denon micro system" thread that lasted all of three months

Current system is Sony CDP-X303ES > Sony TA-F770ES > Monitor Audio Silver S5... Wired up with a mixture of Fisual & Van Damme cables.

I know the TV is simply ghastly, it would be out on its ear if I didn't enjoy retro [well 90's] gaming so much. The system itself is all very unfussy & does the job musically which is all that matters... No vinyl to faff with here ! I've never been a huge fan of most MA speakers and have been guilty in the past of dismissing them without even listening but managed to get these NOS for £50 so thought I'd give them a go and they haven't left the system since... really much better than expected.

Currently stretching the legs of the little TA-FA30ES I received from Tony this morning, its a nice little amp but compared to the 770 its audibly rolled off at frequency extreme's & has a very warm & cosy presentation in stark contrast to the 770's [lack of] character imparted on the sound.

Crummy pictures I know but it turns out Sony make far better hifi than point & shoot camera's which are shite :D

303ES Paul. I've taken a peek inside & there is huge potential for improvement :eyebrows: but I'm just enjoying it "as is" for the time being. Due to move house in 6 weeks & I'll have a proper workshop three times the size of what I have now so I'm saving all of my projects until then.

Could easily add an additional toroidal transformer to supply the analogue output stage, replace the six 25p opamps with some decent one's, class a bias them & remove those horrible electrolytic coupling caps for starters...

Sounds like you're gonna have a nice project on your hands there :)

I have fond memories of my 339ES which I had prior to the CDI and used to compete with £1k plus machines, which is impressive as it was only about £400 new :)

WHAT :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

I was only telling George recently... A couple of years back when I still had a full fat vinyl rig it was wearing a bit thin anyway but I purchased an "audiophile" 180g pressing I'd wanted for ages, cost me £40 I think... Anyway, the very first play I slipped whilst queuing and left a massive scratch running from the very first second of play to the very last ! :steam: I was very annoyed but didn't do an Andre and smash it all up :D

T'was the straw that broke the camels back, that was the day I gave up on vinyl replay... How sad :(

Ikea "Corras" - They don't make them any more but when they did they were available in either beech or maple veneer... Originally designed as bedside tables but by happy coincidence they are the perfect size for hifi separates & have an adjustable shelf :D Can often be found on eBay for £10-£20.

What's the amp James? I love cleaning old gear. I have an old Cambridge Audio P40 that was in a really dire state and really only fit for the bin, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. Still in bits. Wish I'd taken a photo as it was when complete.

The pile consists of [left to right]

Tchaikovsky ~ Romeo & Juliet
Tchaikovsky ~ 1812 Overture
Mozart ~ Violin Concertos No. 1 & 4
The Legendary Big Bands
Elisabeth Schwarzkopf Sings Operetta...Waaay tooo German :nono:
An Evening At The Proms [1959]
Brahms ~ Concerto For Violin, Cello & Orchestra
The Great Louis Armstrong
Sid Phillips ~ Chicago And All That Jazz
John Denver ~ Poems, Prayers & Promises

The amp is a Sony TA-FA3ES. I discovered that the 3ES is a true ES design but the 30ES that came afterwards is a 920QS with fancy knobs on

I must admit I do have a soft spot for the TD150. I had three of them years ago. My first one was bought new and used with a Decca International arm and Decca London Blue. I though it sounded marvellous. The standard arm you have is actually a good match for the Shure cartridge.

The tonal characteristics of the V15 III are not that much different to the M75, you just get a bit more resolution and slightly better tracking.

Not sure what to make of it tbh

Damage is: snapped stylus, arm lift doesn't work, 1 foot missing, severe dings in the front of the plinth, strobe doesn't work & something's rattling inside when moved... AND I've just noticed its an X60 not X70 as advertised

At least it wasnt anything really nice though eh ? I've discovered the origin of the rattling... The whole chassis is some sort of cast resin like Sony use as the base of some ES gear [Gibraltar chassis] this has moulded posts with threaded holes for the bottom panel & two have snapped off - Shows you how well it was packed

On a more positive note, I've also received a DVP-S7700 which was packed beautifully by someone that obviously cared  that man ! And what a corker it is too... I had one years back but never really appreciated how good it was or indeed how well built they are. Motorised front panel ala B&O, dual laser optics, Separate digital/analogue power supplies, R-Core analogue supply transformer, analogue output stage looks to be lifted directly from the XA-30ES, glass epoxy circuit boards, Elna Silmic capacitors, copper plated chassis, honeycomb gibraltar base, OFC power cable oh and "high carbon content cast iron feet." ... Can we say attention to detail ? Yes, I think we can.

I thought you were downsizing your collection at one point, how wrong I was.

Downsizing ? Moi ? :D

I'm a serial boxswapper... But on a budget, which makes it quite interesting ! I'm honestly at the point now where I can't recall everything I've had so sometimes I'll buy something to play with only to re-remember it

Generally works out fine, when you change kit often enough you need to revisit some stuff as the synergy could have been off first time 'round

What BlacK Arts did you engage in to discover this? Can it be done with a 725?

Not sure on the 725... Try the 7700 one which is: Player in standby, press title, clear, power in that order on the remote & you'll be presented with the service menu which has options for auto laser calibration, laser ageing, all functions test etc etc...

If that doesn't work I'll look up the 725 service manual.

Spent a couple of hours messing around with that Sony turntable today... Repaired the dodgy arm lift, cleaned all the switches & glued the snapped off screw bits. Its all now fully working & playing as I type this only problem is that missing foot the seller denies all knowledge of

I've had a thought though, will a Techy 1200 foot fit ? They look to be the same design [lump of rubber with some threaded bar through the middle]

Hmm...

Mr Kipling
27-02-2014, 21:49
Thanks James. Tried that but it didn't work. The screen did briefly display "Diag Start" and went blank. Tried various alternatives but none worked.

You wouldn't have a Technics SL-P550 manual? Wondered if the motor drive ic was the same as the SL-P1200. Not sure if it's a AN8039S. If I go and look I'll lose this page. Thanks.

Sorry, only just spotted this. Try it with your video out set to composite, thats the only way it works on the 7700... I forgot to mention that

Mr Kipling

Got it!

God it's seen some stick: CD/409 DVD/1039

What's the mechanical aging for? Had a go at re-setting cd and dvd with the auto adjust.

The IC for the 1200 is a AN8290S. There's a cheap 550 faulty and I wondered if it might share the same motor drive chip. I've ordered the control IC but it hasn't arrived yet after a week.

istari_knight
01-03-2014, 14:50
Mecha aging allows a sort of auto repeat mode for testing purposes... Not something I've done much of.

Your IC may yet arrive, it recently took ages for some spare parts to reach me in the post [arrived yesterday, purchased on the 7th!] RM are struggling at the moment it would seem.

Mr Kipling
02-03-2014, 00:26
I thought mechanical aging might compensate for wear. I had the draw opening for 30 cycles and nothing seemed to be happening, and so existed.

The IC came yesterday. Waiting for some caps to come. Hope the fault is with the regulator board.

Hmm, I dunno... Its not a feature I've ever used but its always described as an "auto repeat mode" - Probably by other's who are just guessing having also never used it

Systematic replacement of every component is all you can do for the Techy I suppose ? You'll find the fault eventually... Hopefully :goodluck:

Looking at the schematics there are some very obvious performance slugs built in, probably to better compliment budget TT & speakers of the time but with a few simple modifications It would be very easy to bring out the performance its truly capable of.... If it stays long enough I'll try a couple out.

All I can say Geoff, is we obviously have very different taste ! I would agree in reverse, the AR4's being an alright budget model & the DM4's being wonderful :ner:

From last nights listening sesh I found the DM4's to have superior midrange & treble but low frequencies were non existent whereas the R50's thunder it out... Its amazing how quickly one gets used to hearing bass as a low frequency boom boom "noise" but when listening to the R50's you can hear each individual note, each pluck of the bass guitar strings... Sounds obvious yet is completely absent from many, many speakers that are otherwise good.

Overall the jury's still out, I'm not bowled over by the R50's by any stretch but they do have some very addictive qualities which warrant further listening ;) I suspect results will differ with alternate amplification.

It couldn't be more different... No effortless quality, no incisive bass slam, no analytically detailed treble. It does however provide a window into recordings that I honestly had forgotten could exist within a "hifi" system.

I haven't stopped sitting here listening since it arrived. Put simply, I'm captivated ! [for the first time in a long old while.]

Yup , understand what you mean . I was at Garys ( gazjam ) gaff today listening to his system which comprises of a modified Michell Gyrodek , a very large valve amp and a pair of Edingdales . It was a total pleasure listening to LPs which I had 30 years ago . If it wasn't for the cost of going down the vynil road again I would give it serious consideration .

I do intend to disconnect those tasteless blue LED's though

Yeah… And replace them with ones that cycle from red to green.

Much better.

That sounds brilliant James. Shirley and I are listening to vinyl at the moment through my valve creations and its is wonderful.

Cant beat it can you ?

Is it just me or have valve prices gone up "a little" since '05 ? :stalks: Talking £50 for an EL84 quad now, even 6P14P's are pushing £40 ! Oh well, still worth it :D

As has been happening rather a lot recently I can't tear myself away from listening... "Oh just one more album" :D

The EL84's seem to come into their own during low level late night sessions...

I've heard a couple of Yarlands. Very tasty indeed. IMHO they are an easy way into analogue sound - whether or not you are playing LPs. I would have bought one except it did not have enough inputs.

They are slightly more expensive than the equivalent "Music Angel" or "Aria" branded one's & while they do look very similar, I can confirm build quality is far higher on the Yarland models [and the transformer is 230v not 220v !] More inputs could be added, if you're DIY inclined ? You could do away with the relay switching & fit a simple 5 way / 3 pole selector.

I've just "rolled" in some ex-Soviet 6N3P-EV's but the magical balance that was so right has vanished... It suddenly sounds like your average cheap transistor amp now  back in with the GE 5670's and ahhh thats more like it !

First chance I've had to listen since doing the above mod - Bigger improvement than I ever expected... To be honest I wasnt sure if there even would be an improvement

lots more low level detail in the bass and what can only be described as "presence".

So what's the mod! just the inductor?

istari_knight
31-08-2014, 16:16
Yarp :)

Replaced the stock ferrite-core inductor in series with the bass driver with a chunky monkey air-core. 3.3uF Ansar caps are on order for the HF section ;)

Here they are in stock form:

Depending on application I suppose, but I'm not aware that ferrite cored inductors would necessarily be inferior.

istari_knight
31-08-2014, 16:56
Thats why I didn't expect much in the way of improvements... Especially at my low listening levels, there was never a risk of the ferrite-cores reaching saturation. Still, they have made a rather large difference so I'm not complaining :)

I'm always wary of expectation bias when changing components like this but you'd have to be mutt 'an jeff not to hear these improvements.

The R852s took a bit of getting used to in my system but now they're really starting to sing . They really work well with oak cones supporting them. How are you getting on with the Rega EL8s James . They were what I used before the R852s .

Marco.

Its a "Denon AVC-A11XVA" Marco. Supposed to be quite respectable in 2 channel stereo too which is essential [obviously] but I'll be the judge of that :D Its got an interesting couple of features such as built in room eq function which requires a mic to be plugged in & then it automatically sets levels & EQ for a flat response, and also 3 independent "zones" which can be configured to bi-amp / tri-amp the front stereo pair.

Fantastically fun & sprightly Brian, as Rega do so well but the R852's are in another league IMO. The Rega's are very forgiving of ancillary components which may give them the edge in budget setups whereas the MA's just keep getting better as you improve the rest of the system.

Thats what I've found anyhow :)

Took delivery of the Denon beast this morning... I know I've been spoilt with dinky little valve amps lately but wow this mutha is huge, makes the old 770ES seem petite !

Sounds very nice too. Just running in stereo mode ATM & it sounds just like all decent mid range Denon stereo amps I've had/heard previously, refined/smooth/detailed. Maybe a touch too smooth for some it could almost be described as creamy :D

Sadly not, that was nice ! No this is their penultimate surround sound amp that rrp'd at £2.5K, sounding rather good thus far & the built in DAC / internet radio are pretty cool too.

Yes Shane, in my last post it goes: Brio-R, Elex-R & Apollo-R.

Apparently one of the designers [Terry B] is rather fond of the old Leak Stereo 20 hence the many "EL84" / "better with valves" references.
