Cd player on peanuts

What recommendations have you all got for a cd player on a budget of a £100 or less?

Sounds OK, slightly noisy drive and flimsy CD tray but less than half price and free delivery.

Very surprised at the sound of the Philips CD608 I got from eBay France for €19!!!! Very lightweight, I reckon the transformer must be made of plastic, everything else is.

However, through the Musical Fidelity A100, it sounds terrific, clear treble with a good firm tuneful bass. A model that 99.99% would pass by I'm sure. Its the first time I've seen a CD player check to see what size the disc is. They didn't have CD singles when I was buying new stuff!!

I find it very enjoyable and at that sort of price, worth a punt just to check it out!!

Yes indeed but I have a sneaking suspicion that it might end up a little over £100:eyebrows:

There are lots of choices out there.. I've been pleasantly surprised by a very old Marantz 54 which is from the first/second generation of CD players, is solid as a rock and sounds pretty sweet. Mine was found/thown out, but can be had pretty cheap if you like retro CD operation with a count-the-LEDs-to-work-out-which-track-it-is display. A top of the line Sony 552 from the same era can be had that cheap too (if it's working now, it probably will for some time yet).

Probably the more modern bargains though are some of the late 90s Marantz's like CD63 or CD67. Cd4000 too and the studio machines PDM320/321. Those last two, if bought on ebay as an auction and low start can be the best value for money, the 321 with balanced output too - see them go for £40 - £65 - just ignore the buy it nows which price them at £125+ cos they rarely sell.

My PDM320 was about £10 because the draw wouldn't close fully due to a slack pulley belt, hence cd wasn't clamped properly, hence laser wouldn't read the CD, hence the seller (as so many do!) thought the laser was dead.. A ten min fix with a 50p belt and it sounds great.

And if you don't mind the looks many big brand, that are now considered old tech, DVD players sound good too and can be had for peanuts (if not given away, literally).

In a charity shop nearby there's a Technics SLP222A and an interesting Sony CDP 791, the latter is interesting in the sense that this 791 is identical to the X-111ES but they brand them differently here in the UK.

If you are lucky, you may just about get a Pioneer PD-S505 Precision for £100. That's the one with the Tom Evans mods. I've got two of these and they sound as musical as my Meridian players and they are an absolute bargain at the money they go for. They make a great CD transport too.
