I just fitted a magnetic bearing that Vic supplied to the Salvation. Its the latest upgrade to the TT
Its about a 15min job
First thing to notice is the quick start up, its up to speed in the time it takes to blink.
Initially I played Gene Ammons Boss Tenor The last 3 tracks are well recorded. First thing I notice is the whack of the drums, boy you can really feel them in the body. The sax seems to have more body too. I am also catching snare drums better too.
Next up is some Al Dimeola His notes comes flying out the fret board its like I got Al and his rhythm section in my room
I am so happy with this upgrade its taken my vinyl to another level.
I think most people would find this kind of resolution a bit overwhelming but I love it

A good thing keeps getting better. I know I want a Salvation to go alongside my Techy. It's just a matter of time, I suppose.

I'm pleased you concur John and I wasn't imagining the big lift in dynamics and resolution! It's quite shocking really, I didn't believe there was scope for such an improvement.

There a few in the states
Vic always tinkering
Its a simple engineering solution that when you hear it just makes sense

Yes totally agree Clive I am noticing more detail in the treble but the best bit is the attack

I first developed a magnetic bearing for my deck six years ago and have continued to refine the system since - it comes as no surprise to me that performance is improved.

Agree a good deck is always being refined

:stalks: Clive, what's up with that platter!? I have not seen that on Vic's site before. I guess I need to go see what else he's been up to.

Vic might not like the idea; but, I've been intrigued by the possibility of pairing the Teres Versus motor with the Salvation.

The Salvation rim motor idea originally came from the Verus motor. I heard the 2 side by side I would recommend you go for Vic motor He tackled a few issues like reliability and issues with the O ring the Verus has and the platter is now designed for this set up (no o ring issues)
I let Clive explain details to the platter

Haha, yes it's the latest platter. It's a little more dead sounding, in a good way.

The Versus is ok but my feeling is that I could hear the motor being controlled, also Vic's worked out the drive system rather better than Teres did IMO. Trying to get all the parts working together in harmony is a delicate balancing act. The lack of servo or other type of active speed control sounds better with the Salvation with 9kg platter, low friction bearing and rim drive just seem to come together. Some drag was tried and it helped in some areas but it caused more hassle in other areas. Like a I say, it's a balancing act. BTW with the magnetic bearing my platter takes 5m 10s to come to a stop from 33rpm.

The Salvation has to be one of the most interesting current turntables ,seems great value as well,
that new platter looks very nice got any more pics Clive,

Hi Paul,

No more pics yet, I hope to do some in the next few days. My room is dark so I need to move the deck to get some decent photos.

I'm taken a quick couple of pics....nothing special. I'm trying out a cheap photo tent which is too small for the deck.

that looks very nice Clive , is that a separate mat? with the support spikes,
How is it compared to the old platter and have you ever heard the acrylic platter?
cheers Paul

John

The support spikes are bounded it s based on the reso mat without the mat, seems to give more solidity

Hi Paul.

As John says, the spikes/pillars are attached directly to the platter. A thin smear of silicone is all that's needed.

How the current platter compares to the original clear acrylic platter is hard to say, it's been ages since I've heard the original platter. I remember the 14 inch aluminium platter being better than the acrylic though I must say the acrylic was very nifty and the deck had a very small footprint with it. In between the 12 inch acrylic and 14 inch aluminium platters were some tests with Acetal (Delrin) mats and even a full Acetal platter. The various Acetal combinations all had the same sonic signature in that they all boosted or smeared frequencies mainly in the female vocal range. I should add that the 14 inch platter benefits the drive system giving good gearing and the latest platters are made to a much higher tolerance than the original acrylic ones, this is of course important for such a rim drive deck.

It looks purposeful although there is something about it that reminds me of a bacon slicer!

I see what you mean though the bacon slicer has a pivoted arm so you'll only get accurately sliced bacon at two points across the slice.

The bacon slicer offers a direct drive mechanism - which translates to better acoustics and has better bearings. :D:D:D

Clive -

That is a very nice platter you have on that turntable. The question that is on everyones mind is that can it be used on a Technics SL1200MK2, and how does it compare to the Mike New Aluminum/Copper Platter?
And can you add the Disco Dot Strobes that everyone has come to love on the Technics Turntables?

:eyebrows::eyebrows::eyebrows::eyebrows::eyebrows:

Happy New Years everyone!!!

Its not possible to use the platter for the 1210

Well.....I reckon Salvation's rim drive is a good alternative to resulting is a different texture of bacon, might be better or worse :)

The bearings - would a bacon slicer with a magnetic main bearing and air bearing on the arm work better? Could be!

As John says, the platter is only intended for the rim drive Salvation, it's 14 inches at the base and it would need a lot of mods to fit any other TT.

thanks for the pics Clive a very nice set up , how is life with the Terminator compared to a pivoted arm , I have very little experience with parallel trackers

Ouch, that sounds painful.

Life with a // tracker is easy, actually easier than with a pivot. The issue is that you need to recalibrate your skills to set it up and use it. The latest tweek results in easy wire dressing, this was the only real hassle in the past.
