Grab handles, rack mounting slots, VU meters, zillions of buttons and knobs, needlessly large and overly complex. I love it and I want one :)

You'll be need a rare 'SH9020' Peak meter unit.. I can't remember if Technics did a 19'' rack cabinet but i know Sansui did the 'GX5' unit..

I got enough meters already Andrew lol but a Techics RS-1500 /1700 reel to reel would be nice.I'll have to make do with my Tascam 34 tho :D

You can buy tall metal 19'' rack units that look like that from any studio supply. You can alternativly buy rack strips & hardware to fix into wooden cabinets..

Aha - very cool! I used to have one (and the SH-9020 meter unit) but sold them when i realised I'd only used them about half a dozen times in a year and they were taking up inordinate amounts of space.

The deck is quite good but has no metal tape compatibility (production stopped the year before metal cassettes were introduced) and it won't take high recording levels on Chrome due to the head construction - it distorts very quickly. The best results I had were from premium Normal tapes (I used TDK AR-X) although a NOS Ferrochrome BASF I found on eBay worked nicely, too.

Hi Adam
Thats true but metal tape playback is not a problem as bias and eq are the same as chrome. So far I have made recordings with TDK-SA and Memorex type 1 and playback has been excellent. Also as I type playing back a pink Floyd recording on TDK metal tape and sounding superb. The deck has just been fully serviced by an ex engineer.I'm over the moon with it.
