You can tell Christmas is rapidly approaching by all the appalling rubbish commercials on the box.
If they're not trying so generously to lend you Christmas present buying money at 2000% interest, they're pressuring kids into browbeating their parents into buying the latest plastic piece of junk for a mere £79.95 or whatever. Then there are the supermarkets all trying their best to foist their ludicrously overpriced seasonal food products at you from every angle.
And, what about the charities for this that and just about every supposed 'worthy' cause? All laying on thick with the pathos and bad taste sentimentality and even having the barefaced cheek to nominate the amount you should give them. I hate them with a vengance, it's just moneygrabbing deceit! Only a tiny proportion of donations actually goes to the cause.
You just do not see intelligent or clever commercials these days. Target the dimwit, undiscerning masses, probably being the order of the day.
(in case you are wondering, I definitely am a grumpy old git)
I,m so Grumpy as I have not watched commercial telly for 20+ years , and in that time the demise of the beeb has driven me :mental:
You just do not see intelligent or clever commercials these days.
That's because nobody intelligent or creative is making commercials these days. A low grade GCSE in Media Studies and they're in.
Even worse than that is how thick are the people who commission this shit and pay the money? Makes you wonder
Try Sky+ (or similar recording device) then when you have to watch telly (Breaking Bad, occasional movie or the Footy) fast forward through the commercials...job done.
Watch on catch up or on demand, no commercials
Having given up watching broadcast TV at home in July, I can honestly say my life is much the better for it. I now listen to music, read and watch films or DVD box set series - just started Breaking Bad and will do The Wire after that. You can keep broadcast TV thankyou :ner:
Can't remember the last time I saw a TV ad. iPlayer and DVDs for me.

How many creative agencies have you visited to discover this Frank?
I spent 20 years as a director in film and TV, including commercials. There are masses of very bright people in the industry, many of them like me with degrees from good universities. And there are plenty of very bright people who don't have degrees, but the idea that you can walk into a decent advertising agency with a low grade GCSE is totally laughable - it is extremely competitive to get a foot in the door.
All the best creatives can write clever scripts but often 'clever' is not required by the client who are paying the money and it really depends on who the target audience are. Sometimes, you can talk them round to another way of approaching an ad, sometimes you can't ...
I think Frank was exaggerating for effect but it doesn't matter as according to this thread no-one is watching them anyway. I know I don't. I tape everything on the virgin box them I can fast-forward through the pap. I really cannot bear to watch the commercials, they hurt my brain.

You think you have problems!! You should see some of the French stuff.
Fortunately I don't have to suffer it much as we don't have a TV ourselves. Our French neighbours have the set on 24 hours a day it seems and its sub USA shit.
I think the March of the Proles is well on the way now. Lowest common denominator is becoming the norm.
We are all doomed - DOOMED i tell ya.

I was being flippant Julian, because the adverts I see are downright crass and if that is the perception that I get, it has failed in marketing terms.
No matter how creative or talented the advert creators are, at the end of the day it is the client who determines what goes into the can. I really do wonder though what goes through their minds when they give the blessing to the final version that gets transmitted.
does anyone actually buy anything following and ad?
I pretty much know what I want and am capable of finding it without the assistance of the ad men
Ask anyone you like and they will say that advertising doesn't have any effect on them. Curious, that, isn't it?
I think I recall reading that a 30 second slot in the middle of Coronation Street was a million quid.
I have noticed that whilst most men can't abide the ads and have to change channel when they come on, most women are happy to sit there and watch them.

Not necessarily - maybe you aren't the target audience in which case it doesn't matter what you think of them. The ad has only failed if it hasn't driven sales within that specific audience.

Indeed, but by the time they get the final version of the ad, so much money will have been spent on research, pre-production and production, it will not be in anyone's interest to point out to the client that the ad is crap. It will take a very brave client to turn round and say they want something completely different, but it does happen - once the ad gets to that stage there is only so much you can do to tweak or alter it ...
So what ads and films have you been responsible for, Julian? Anything famous?

Anyone remember the Martini "Beautiful people" advert that lost over £20 million (in old money - considerably more in today's) in lost sales?

IMO the clever part is exactly about how 'dumb' to make them.
I think tv advertising works best when you're not really watching it, it kind of relies on the fact that television is a very effective sedative. People gather together in a warm dark place to relax around it advertisers are paying for access to suggestable minds (darkness, proximity and a diluted sense of self are classical propaganda tools - television is like a stay at home rally!)
More often than not TV advertising is trying to instill in the viewer an emotional response, not a rational response, they need you to see the product on the shelf and feel unreasonably warm / fuzzy / desirous of it; when you're wide awake and in full critical mind most ads (indeed most television) is facille, patronising nonsense, it requires folk to succomb to its hypnotic charms to work.
One of my favourite books which I reccomend over and over is 'The Hidden Persuaders' by Vance Packard it's a look at the birth of psychology and research based marketing (focus groups, perception / depth testing etc) and much of it remains true today. Packard identifies 8 'hidden needs' (which sort of sit alongside Maslow's Hierachy) and which to this day can be seen working in pretty much all marketing and advertising.
On another note though has no one seen the one with the kids delivering the line 'mummy won't let us watch wrestling on the telly, but she seems quite good at it with daddy' (!) not sure of the product and I only saw it once (recently) I'd love to know the story of how, who and why that made it to air!

I reckon its the time of year Ali, long dark nights an' all. I am glad I don't have to suffer TV commercials anymore and the comments here have gone a long way to affirming I really don't want to indulge in broadcast TV anymore. Mind you, I never watched ads anyway, I recorded everything and only watched TV when I fancied it and hit the >> button when they came on.
Can't you record stuff Geoff or just start watching commercial shows 15 minutes after they start as I used to, if you want to see them the same night. You could sneak in one side of an LP first and then watch the programme sans ads after that?

Best plan is to record the programmes you want to watch, and listen to music while you’re doing that, then later fast-forward the adverts - simples! :)
I’m somewhat partial to a sautéed penguin.
Marco.
Best to record everything you want to watch. That way not only can you wind through the adverts but you can also wind through the first 3 minutes of the show that is the stock bit where they tell you what the show is about, and is the same every week, then the next 3 minutes where they show you what is going to happen this week. Not watched an advert in years.

The adverts - oh no, please no more adverts. Do the makers of ads really think that the whole population are stupid? In our household we record what we think we might like and like you, fast forward through ads.
If you ask anyone if they are influenced by advertising they will say no. But it is a multi-billion dollar industry. So someone is wrong.
I actually think avoiding the ads makes you even more susceptible when you do see one. Last week I inadvertently caught an ad for a Dyson space heater thing and immediately logged on to Amazon to buy one. Fortunately it was ludicrously expensive and I managed to stay my hand but it was a close call.

Ah, but do you remember when the resolution went from 405 to 625 lines?
Yes, that was when BBC2 came on line (pun) in 64 I think, and colour came later. Our tv had a series of metal plates that were used to select the freq area. our old set had 625 and 405, with the clunky knob to turn and select the channels. It was a Bush or Murphy (same company) actually it might have been a GEC; it was a long time ago :eyebrows:. Got a colour when it came out a few years later; also a Bush. I was by then repairing them for the co-op (saturday job then full time).

I think its because men dont complain about it but women are obsessed with getting 1 up hence the proliferation of women driving huge people carriers and 4x4s.....ill get into trouble for that doh
For me the ads that are most ridiculous, cheesy and cringeworthy, are those for women's cosmetics… For some reason, the style of these ads has remained rather dated and virtually the same for years, with no attempt whatsoever to be clever or apply any form of lateral thinking!
There’s one at the moment for an ‘age-defying' cream, or some such nonsense, which says something along the lines of ‘Women check themselves in the mirror many times a day to see what’s changed’ - aye, hopefully they’ll still see two eyes, a nose and a mouth!!! :D
Fucking pish of the highest order… Even Del laughed at my comment when she seen the ad.
Thank goodness, she’s not ‘high maintenance’ like a lot of other women are! Couldn’t be doing with that bollocks. She looks after herself, for sure, and always looks nice, but isn’t obsessive in that sense, nor does she plaster herself everyday with make-up - probably one of the reasons why she looks about 15 years younger than she is! ;)
Marco.
Furniture store ads. Always shows people (almost always a woman) relaxing on their stylish couch as though they have found an eternal bliss that is simply not attainable without purchasing new furniture. The reality is it costs £2000 to buy (RRP £4000! but they are having a 'limited time sale'), £100 to make and will fall apart less than in two years. And you have to wait 6-8 weeks for delivery because they are damned if they are going to make one before you've bought it. But don't worry you can have nought percent APR for two years (terms and conditions apply).

And why do they always advertise enormous sofas that would dominate the average-sized living room?
I hated the bastid with a passion, so it failed in Marketing terms :steam:
For you, perhaps (I hated him too, btw), however for others you’d be surprised. Because he was *so* annoying, you might be shocked at how much the subliminal message of the ad (and brand name) 'sinks in' as a result - and that’s what successful marketing is all about.
Remember that other idiot who used to advertise double glazing and say: ‘Ya buy one, ya get one free - I say ya buy one, ya get one free!’ He was in the same category. I think I hated him more, but you can see how both are instantly memorable because they were designed to get on your tits, and that’s subliminal marketing at its best.
Macca touched on it earlier, too, with the Dyson thing, although it plays on the sheer usefulness/unique features of the product and the brand’s existing credibility/aspirational status.
The success story though is the Compare The Market Meerkats who the public adore apparently and spawned the word "simples" which a lot of us now use regularly, from the same people who claim never to watch adverts ;)
Now that’s much more preferable, and really clever. However, they’ve gone for the ‘cute angle’, which is just as effective in a different way!

Disagree - it is/was a pathetic and feeble "schoolboy howler", and not a clever play on words. I hate it as much as I hate it for introducing the now fashionable terminator: "simples" (sic) :steam:
Lol - well, that just personal taste. I quite like it, and as someone who’s worked intensively in sales and marketing, would certainly have been proud to have invented it :)

But the word "simples" in isolation doesn't convey anything.
That’s doesn’t matter. How many people have copied it? *That* is the key to success in marketing. It’s not necessarily supposed to make sense.

It's well known fact that in the Seventies you had no chance with a bird if you couldn't swim. Especially not with a little cockney raver like her - which was the ideal to strive to at the time. Probabaly why anytime went to the baths they were packed. One pool for a community of fifty thousand it was like the Gangees during Divali. It's a wonder anyone learned to swim. Now there are these fitness centres everywhere, they all have pools but you look in they are almost empty.
