encapsulated toroidal or SMPS to supply a voltage regulator

After deciding to abandon battery power for a couple of DIY phonostages and moving to regulated supplies I am after some advice to what provides a better DC supply, an encapsulated toroidal transformer or an SMPS as in an off the self unit.
