Am I imagining it???

My eldest iMac finally failed last week so I've transferred my music and installed the latest software on to my latest (late 2006) Intel iMac and unless I'm completely imagining it, the sound appears to be better.

So what's everyone's thoughts, am I just imagining or could there be a real improvement?

I've just replaced my old Vista Laptop with a new Lenovo running on Win 8.

The jump in performance is beyond my expectation.
It's almost like changing to a new amp/source.
A much better amp..of course.

You are imagining it.
I have a 2 yr old Mac Mini with music on an external HD and a brand new MBP with SSD, the same playback software is on both and same OSX.
I ripped a cd to both systems and I cannot hear any difference between either rip when played back through my dac.

Hi Tim, nope but the software on the newer Mac is the latest version whereas it was a couple of revisions out of date on the older Mac.

Yeah Alan that was my ultimate plan but then again I can't quite afford the 2k price tag for a new iMac :(

All my Macs sound different!! (er...all twelve) No, I lie, two of them sound the same - 2 G4 MacMinis. Apple seem to change the audio cards all the time. The best of all is the MacPro and that has an Intel 'hi definition' audio chip (whatever that means).

I tried Minis as a source for the main hi-fi but the sound was a bit dull so I have to live with a G5 tower next to the rack which sounds fine.

Are you listening to the analogue out of the mac itself? If so then its perfectly feasable that could sound different, as Gordon points out they'll have different analogue stages. If you have it on a dac and have the new machine on the same dac then I'd be inclined to suggest you're imagining it (however I would also add that as long as you're enjoying it and it's a change for the better then great!)

If you are using the internal soundcard then it's not really hifi, I am talking about digital out into a dac.
