View Full Version : FS Sugden C51 A51 and Tuner
Selling for a mate of mine, his Dad's old kit.
All work OK, especially now I've got proper mains cables sorted for each unit.
I was especially surprised at the quality of the pre amp and power amp.
Really surprised. Sounds rather good :)
The tuner functions, but sound quality probably reflects early 70's technology here.
Not in pristine condition...but average at best.
Would prefer collection from Nantwich, but could probably deliver if it aint too far or fits in with my work trips (I do get about a bit!)
Bargain at £200 - get yerself a chrimble present.
You can read all about the pre and amp here-

Nice. One of the finest sounding amplifiers of its day. I reckon that's a bargain at the price. Tempted myself.
I used to use this very same combination (bar the tuner). The power amplifier was a copy of the A21, built using the PCBs and components used by Sugden (I knew someone who knew Jim Sugden and was thus able to get the parts for me at cost), but in a case of my own. It was later upgraded to the A51 design. The power amp was used with a C51, before it was replaced with a Quad 33. The whole worked very well into Quad '57s - in fact I consider it one of the ideal partners for use with Quad ESLs.
The T51 tuner always received good reviews, so all in all, this is a bit of a bargain folks.

Someone snap this up. I have the pre-amp and the tuner. Always fancied completing the set but apparently six hi-fis is enough. I must admit that I like the tuner very much. Its a bit insensitive and needs a good strong signal but sounds very close the the FM4 - another bit of kit I won't let go in a hurry.
I have 5 amps as it is. ...would love it but I better not...must stop looking at it.
Guys.. I know , I know.
I nearly kept it all myself.
But same here.. Too many amps.
The guy that owns these also has a pair of quad speakers that these used to power (he's just lost the feet of the electrostatics!)
If these don't go quick.. I'll end up with a 4th system.
Not even an offer.. So just thought give it another shot before it goes to another place !

So tempted by these lovely old boxes but I purchased some monoblocks in the last few weeks and I might have a bit of trouble smuggling these in! I was expecting that someone would have put me out of my misery by now (and purchased them) so have a bump on me.
Thanks David. I'll be fair...you really would struggle to smuggle that big green box in.
Not exactly another anonymous black box.
Mind you, what about claiming your going all 60's retro chic?
C'mon...its only Shropshire, just down the road, I'll drop it off. :eyebrows::eyebrows:

Yes I know. The fact that it so near makes it even more tempting. I can hear them calling but I must resist..... Please someone buy them.
Somebody, PLEASE buy these - they are excellent value for money.
I can't believe they haven't already been sold. I would buy them myself had I not been in possession of nine amplifiers already.
Go on - you won't be dissappointed! :)
I would but need to offload my audioromy first.....
Sold- many thanks to Marco and the forum.

Great news to hear they have sold. I hope they went to a good home. At least I can relax now :)

+1! :)
Yeah , thanks chaps.
A very nice forum member in the midlands made me an offer and being full of the Christmas spirit I accepted. Another version is that my wife threatened all sorts of reprisals if I didn't start making space in the basement before the kids got back for Christmas.
Anyway someone got new toys for chrimble and a real bargain. What really amazed me is how not dated the sugden amp sounded especially for something 40 odd years old. Just goes to show.
