I'll be happy if it means that no longer will anyone be able to avoid taxing or indeed insuring their vehicle.
they went out of fashion here last year, we no longer have to display, but are advised to keep the receipt in the glove box of the car.
Since the vehicle licence, MOT and insurance are all held centrally it was but a step further to eliminate the tax disc. Unfortunately, the man in the street will no longer be able to tell if a vehicle is taxed.
I have read somewhere that along with doing away with the paper disc it will also be possible to pay by monthly direct debit. I am all for that :)

And you would be correct Frank. Paying monthly via direct debit will put paid to those frantic, last minute trips to the post office for a new disc ;)

As I also understand it, anyone who buys a 6 month tax disc gets stuffed with a surcharge already for that, so they plan to reduce that charge for DD payments

I think it's a 5% surcharge.
I pay my fuel bills by DD because they give me a surcharge, otherwise I would pay quarterly. Don't see the point of paying any more than you have to. Also the reason why I pay for the TV licence as a single payment.

The (road fund licence) tax disc is an anachronism anyway and should have been done away with years ago. If our tightwad government sees fit to take money off us supposedly for letting us use the roads we already pay the councils and highways agency to upkeep for us, then surely it should just be tacked onto the exorbitant levy already charged on our fuel. Simple, it becomes self levelling, the most use pays the most tax!

Indeed, but don't think for a minute that any of us enjoy a long commute to work. We are driven to living further away from where the work is to afford anything decent, the penalty being years off our lives in traffic jams and high car running costs.
Anyone that thinks any taxation said to be levied for a specific purpose goes towards that purpose is deluding themselves. All taxation goes into one big pot marked "Budget approximation" or "how much we can get away with spending on things we think are important" New things get added to this requirement each year as the politicians repay their various paymasters and they spend the minimum on public welfare and well being that they can get away with without provoking a riot. Each year they get nearer and nearer to provoking that riot.
Don't forget that Income Tax was originally imposed to fund our war effort against some nation or other but when the war was won the tax stayed in place and we accept it as inevitable. If it was only used for it's original purpose we would all be a lot better of and many more of us would still be alive and in one piece - what a thought!!

Its not been a 'Road Fund Licence' for many years Geoff, VED or Vehicle Excise Duty has been used for general taxation since 1938!

totally agree my people carrier is £475 per year and its only a 2.2 diesel, just a penny on fuel would cover it so i'm told

That is not a workable solution for several reasons..
1. Due to aims of reducing pollution less tax is paid on cleaner engines. No tax if your daft enough to buy an electric car. Little encouragement to retire old polluting vehicles.
2. More tax, more you travel puts additional burden on workers who have to travel long distance so reducing their income and hence spending in the economy. Also raise transport costs and price of goods.
3, The other alternative of Toll roads will mean everyone will jam up other roads trying to avoid them and cause a wave of protests.
