F--k me , I just woke up and felt like my leg had been amputated

The pain in my left calf muscle was unbelievable :steam:

The muscle was solid like an iron bar , and do you think I could do anything with it

Must have lasted 6 - 7 minutes

Hope it was a one off glitch , not looking forward too it again :nono::nono::nono::nono::nono:

Now I am wide awake , so may as well listen to some toons :)

This is a well known malady that affects pishanto aficionados. You are totally effed. No known cure. It's overs kadovers. Giving up on pishanto is always recommended but nobody ever does so that has never been tested. It's like advising an alcoholic to stop drinking. Amputation has been tried but the symptoms will spread to other limbs. It is time to say Goodbye, Arrivederci, Adios Amigo, Sayonara, Au Revoir, Totsiens. There is only one thing left to do - put a list of your gear in your sig so that your memory can live on in the systems of of others.

Had this since I was a kid. Fell out of bed once the pain was so bad, parents watching tv below were quite surprised. Calf massage from my dad was quite useful as I was quite useless.
Don't get it so much now I am so glad to say.
Last big time was after I'd been knocked off my bike and I was strapped, immobile to a board in A&E.
Confused the nurses when I started shouting and screaming.
Bananas may help with potassium. Must try a banana .....

I suggest that Al should look for the book "Kama Sutra for dummies". Should get those stiff muscles back in shape again.

Hot topic in our house at the moment.

The wife has been getting cramps everywhere about her person and at any time of the day or night :( Been going on for upwards of three years now and understandably she is getting mighty fed up with the condition.

Been eating bananas by the box-load and no difference. The doc then prescribed Quinine tablets - no difference. Advised her to up her salt intake - no difference. The doc has now put her on Vitamin D and Calcium tablets and guess what? No difference :steam:

Spent hours searching the net for some sort of answer and am finding that it's the same old answers recycled over and over and over again by people that don't really know what they are talking about or they simply don't know what the answer is. It is assumed that cramps are suffered by people doing sports like running or football and it takes forever wading through that lot to get to cramps that are not sports induced.

I might plug her into the mains each night and see if I can get a feed-in tariff back from all the energy and bad language

Surely if your leg had been amputated there would be no feeling in it?

I've cut my cramps back a lot.
Could be the stretching and yoga I do. Has she tried gentle stretching and/or yoga ?

Yes, cramp in the calf muscles can be excruciating. I've had it so badly on a couple of occasions that it tore the muscle!

Would that work when she gets cramp in her eyebrows? She gets them everywhere you could imagine not just the major muscles like the calfs or thighs. The best I can do for her when it's really bad is to apply a hot water bottle to the affected area which does seem to ease the symptoms slightly.

Poor girl really does suffer with it and as far as I know there is no real known and understood cause or for that matter a cure either.

Quinine is supposed to be good for treating leg cramps http://www.patient.co.uk/medicine/Quinine.htm

If you don't fancy taking tablets I'm not sure how much G&T would have the same effect, perhaps you'd have to get legless :)

Ooh that's grim.
Still there might be an answer somewhere.
I do get cramps in other places, but they are fairly 'obvious' cramp places, neck, arms, thighs.

Maybe it's not cramps
Yes, looks like cramps, feels like them etc but....
The other half is currently being investigated for the umpteenth time for ME (CFS)
Except it now seems at least part, maybe all of the problem is down to problems in her spine.
Medical science, IMO is only a few steps ahead of us lot and sometimes they honestly don't know.
Not a dig at medical science as I'd have been dead a few times without them, but sometimes you can see them scrabbling, or even saying they honestly don't know what the problem is let alone what the answer is

I feel for you Al. Last year I had a case of cramp in my calf that lasted a lot longer than 6-7 minutes. It subsided eventually, but the area was 'traumatised' for months afterwards.

No-one knows what actually causes cramp. A lack of salt is said to be one cause, though unless you spend a lot of time in hot countries and loose salt through sweating, most people have more than enough salt in their diet.

With me, cramp in the leg muscles can occur in the autumn and winter months, particularly if I stretch first thing when I wake up. I have to conciously avoid the temptation and 'wriggle about' a bit before stretching. If I do feel cramp starting in my leg, I find reaching down and bending my foot upwards usually stops the cramping immediately. You see this being done on sports players: footballers and rugby players, followed by a leg massage. This latter presumably warms the area, hence Frank's experience with appling a hot water bottle to the affected area.

I wouldn't use quinine or eat masses of bananas (anyway it's only the pink flesh bananas that have a lot of potassium, and too much potassium is also bad for you); Quinine has a detrimental effect on ones vision: airline pilots are not allowed to drink anything containing quinine two hours befor they fly as their vision will not be 20-20.

Can I suggest magnesium-B particularly and possibly multivitamins Al .
I have a bad diet where I am working which may have caused it, but I am a forgetful sod when it comes to meals anyway... I have had these excruciating spasms for several months, and only by standing, stretching, trying to walk, would it loosen off, sometimes to return within minutes of getting back to bed in the wee small hours.
Been on the Mag-B and Seven Seas multis for about 10 days and so far no recurrence, much to my relief...

My stepfather suffers with cramps all the time after years of plastering, often waking up in the night with crippling cramps. He swears by drinking lots of tonic water [no gin :eyebrows:]... The only thing that helps him apparently ! ... Could be worth a try ?

New Era
Mag Phos tabs.
Have them at the ready cause they are instant results.
Used to use them when I was weight lifting as I got cramp regularly while asleep.
They work!

Al,

THIS IS THE SORT OF CONDITION I GET PAID TO TREAT

Firstly rather than pissing around taking Mg & Fe you need to go to your GP's and ask for a blood test, we need to be looking for if you are deficient in any areas of your blood physiology. Secondly it could be mechanical dysfunction of your deep flexor muscles (either gastrocnemius or Tibialis Posterior), go onto the net and look for specific stretching and strengthening exercises for these muscles. Finally when was the last time you got your bloodpressure and cholesterol checked? If you need any more help send me a PM.
