Hi guys (and girls of course) Here it is at long last ! - The place to showcase your beloved Techie in all it's glory. News is spreading fast, just how awesome this, the most popular of direct drive turntables can sound with a few carefully thought out and designed upgrade modifications, with it's superb quartz locked direct drive system remaining at the heart. So without further ado I'll kick us off - Let the Gallery begin !!!

I've had a couple and upgraded them successfully and they sound pretty good. But I'm not going that route again. I'd have to spend a fortune to find the limits of the Techie, so I use other TTs now and get beautiful results.

+1. It might not be quite how I would have skinned the cat, but I have few doubts that's a record player I could listen to and enjoy. Must get to hear that cartridge sometime.

Looks like you have a 'tower of power' there Rob, filled with Japan's finest!
I'm sure the phono stage in your monster Technics is no slouch, but have you tried a decent external stage with it?
I'm wondering if the Spendors might be a tad too 'polite' for you, but I could be wrong - have you demo'd a pair?

Thanks Marco / Ron, If you ever have the deck specs to edit in and add that would be great. I'm sure that's a rather nice Origin Live Arm I see ? :eyebrows: and whats the cart ? plus there's a nice isolation platform of some sort - tell us more, I and others love seeing the different approaches others take on their upgrade journey - It's interesting stuf ;)

Firstly, thanks muchly Marco for posting the piccy of my Tekko, much appreciated, secondly Robbie to answer your questions: The arm is an Audio Origami rewired and damped Linn Ekos Mk1. The counter weight is a special I got from Linn many year ago to balance out a Koetsu on my then LP12. Extra ebony subweight by speedy Steve from my design to help balance out heavier cartridges such as the Koestsu. The cartridge in residence at the mo is an AT33EV which I'm giving a work out before it is moth balled as a backup. Koetsu Black ESCo reworking to be installed. I don't know if it has been noticed but the cartridge wires look as if they have been crossed over, this was done in haste as I had to pick up the wife, her sister and mother from the coach station and clear up before hand. The channel polarity (left/right) is correct however and I won't bother changing until the KB goes back on.
The platter is a MN ali/copper with Oyaide BR12 rubber mat (slightly dished by about 1mm and on top of that is an Origin live thin mat. The best sound I can get after juggling with at first an Achromat, SDS, plus numerous over permutations too lengthy to go into. The bearing is MN secured to a MN bearing base plate which in turn has been fixed to the chassis by bolts and and gasket sealant.
After experimenting with Isonoe feet, sorbothane I settled for Origin Live feet (now referred to as Vantage Audio feet) all placed on a Townshend Audio spring belows platform, a sort of sprung TT, which in turn sits on a Mark Baker original Ultra TT stand. The chassis has been vibration and sound proofed with special pads.
On the power supply side I started with the TS standard, then HE models (I liked this one) and now use the TS T-01 shunt psu which really is an end game for me.
Internally, I have removed all unwanted items such as the strobe itself, target light and pitch control.
The deck itself is rock steady on pitch and is perfect for my diet of music which is acoustic instrument jazz, small and big band stuff, classical, flamenco guitar, blues and vocals.
I was drawn to the Teckie some four years ago by reading an article in HFW by Stuart Wenhem followed by articles by David Price so I bought the deck brand spanking new in a sealed box (so I'm the only owner) and it started life as my second deck in the home office. The LP12 did the premium job, now it is the other way around... don't get me wrong the LP12 (mine is modded...can't help myself ) is superb as now and again I like a bit of a different system to enjoy.
Sorry for the length of this but it is in fact a short tale of my journey with Lulu my Techie , and what is now my final deck.
Cheers
Ron:piano:

Martin you or whoever does it? (you I presume as I don't know any vinyl fans who let someone else clean their turntable) has the most proficient dust elimination system I have
ever seen . the Pictures aren't to shabby either, very nice indeed
Paul
Thanks, Paul. Dust is as big a problem for me as for anyone else. I tend to let it accumulate then get the duster out and have a big go at it. Flash macro photography is remorseless in showing up the stuff, unfortunately.

Hi 'REXTON', Your Techie has undergone what can only be described as 'extensive' upgrading and modifications - Extensive !!. You clearly want to take it as far as you can / no compromise and you can. Along with Marco and Martin, I'm quite envious that you have been able to do that as I'd go as far as I'd like to if I could, so good on you. A part of me really wants to do the Paul Hynes reg mods, pcb and SR7 etc - That would be the cherry on top, who knows one day hopefully! Bless up !

Looking good, Kevin! I bet it sounds fab :)
Have you tried adjusting VTA 'on the fly', whilst a record is playing, and fine-tuning the results by ear? For me, that's the biggest boon with the stock Technics arm, and of course the FX-1200...
Enjoy! :gig:
Marco.
Yep, done that.
It's sounding rather splendid.
Glad it's worked out well for you. I thought you'd like it! More people should be using this arm on the Techy. It deserves to be as successful as the Jelco (albeit at a higher price) :)
Marco.
How much is a Jelco, with armboard, mounting collar and a decent tonearm cable?
I bet the price difference isn't huge.
From the looks point of view, I can understand why people don't want to spend the cash on it, but from a performance perspective it's great.
I tend to buy with my ears when shopping for Hifi. Sure, I'll read reviews but the final decision comes down to what sounds good (unless the Mrs is with me, then it's what sounds good, looks wife friendly, and what matches the soft furnishings).

More might have done if I had received one to evaluate and review, as discussed. However, someone flounced off first.
Lol..... Whatever way you cut it, the Funky one definitely deserves wider recognition.
Marco.
It's a shame I don't live closer as I could bring my deck round for one of you to drop your platter on for a listen. It does not have a fancy PSU or the regulator mods, but you would get a flavour for the sound (and I would hear what the platter does).

the sa-750d on mine cost £500 new with armboard and cable. would be another £50ish for a collar. (mine is fine without, though i'll probably get one at somepoint)

would you really take that borg like arm off your pride and joy to fit a potentially inferior arm dude?
couldn't be arsed personally! :)

JELCO ARM £385-£450
ARMBOARD £40-£90
COLLAR £45
CABLE £30-£2000
I personally think the Jelco can take on and beat arms costing 2-3 times more (in my experience anyway)
Don't forget there is a new limited edition Jelco with silver wiring on the way (shameless plug but it's essential news for Techy owners)

You'll never know if it's inferior, or superior, unless you try one.
It's not difficult to change an arm.
Oh I think the Dynavector is in a different class, but it's immaterial now.
I don't doubt the Dynavector is better, but just how much better is it?
Would I be prepared to pay the difference for the increase in performance? As it probably costs more than my entire system, I very much doubt it.
I'm very much after value for money with my purchases, and I think the Fx-1200 has given me that.
Sure, I don't have the ultimate sound, but I enjoy what I have. After a new platter and cartridge, that will probably do for a while.
I'm not advocating the Dynavector for everyone, Kevin! Sure, it's an expensive arm, although beautifully made, and the law of diminishing returns applies. In my case, I had wanted one for the best part of thirty years so it was wonderful to finally take delivery of one direct from Tokyo production. It's a superb sounding arm (to my ears, much better than an SME V, for instance) but isn't for everyone. I still believe I'm the only person in the world to have mounted one on a Technics SL-1210.
So yours is the deck on the Sound HiFi page?
I think it looks superb, but can only ponder what it sounds like.
One day, if I am lucky enough I may be in a position to purchase an arm of the same quality.
At the moment, life has other priorities for my hard earned cash.
Some reviews I have read say that the FXR is better than a SME IV or V, but I think reviews are very subjective.
How this translates to the FX-1200 is another question. The main thing is that the FX-1200 has given me an insight into the higher end, and I am happy with my purchase.
The detail extracted from the vinyl is definitely a step up, and with the AT150MLX I get a really natural sound from my system. I am at the point now of wondering if I need to improve my amplification, cables or speakers to get more from it.
I usually listen on headphones late at night, and I am happy with this element.
However, when the wife is out I use my main speakers.
Yes, it also appears on MCRU's pages.
Knowing Arthur's expertise, and although I haven't heard the FXR, I would expect it to perform well as he has a good handle on low resonance designs.

We can't all be pro woodworkers, thats a great effort. These decks look so much better without all that DJ paraphernalia stuck all over the top.
Well done.
Nicely done Keiron, what kind of finish have you put on the wood?
looks like oil or wax. gives a nice sheen rather than a gloss whatever it is.
One of the cooler looking 1200s around!
What veneer / polish have you used?
Good effort, Keiron. It's been a while since I ran an SME III - can't say I've ever seen one on a Technics. Looks nice.

Thanks for the kind words. It's a dark walnut (not as dark as I'd hoped) and finished in Danish oil. It's a tad patchy to be honest - I'll give it another 'scrub' at some point to even the finish out.
It actually still incorporates the original plinth. I simply bolted 4 pieces of MDF around the edge and filled the gaps. It still uses the same rubber chassis.
It has a Paul Hynes external PSU (it came like that when I bought it).
The change is purely cosmetic. Sticking these bits on has made absolutely no difference to the sound. But admittedly you could probably take it away and replace it with a Steepletone and I wouldn't hear the difference, so cloth-like are my ears :)

And finally I got my hands on a 1210mk5G :) My good friend had this, and has excactly the same upgrades as my 1210mk2. Mike New Bearing was the last upgrade that we did last week. He wanted a Rega P9. Can you belive that:ner:
The mk5G looks so much better than the mk2, too. The future upgrades would be Mike New ETP Platter and maybe change the arm. But I will keep it as it is for some time now. It's been upgraded from scratch the last 6 months:
- Isonoe feet.
- Achromat 1200 Funkplatter
- Rek-O-Kut record weight
- KAB rewired Cardas arm.
- KAB Fluid Damper
- KAB pcb card
- Cardas Litz phono wire
- Mains Cables R us PSU with regulator
- Sumiko HS-12
- Denon DL-103
- Isokinect 103 Stabilizer
- 22 gram aux weight
- Mike New Bearing
And I must say. With the DL-103 it sounds just great!!!

Different LP! How much did the platter set you back? Also, I am curious about the weight of the platter. In the meantime We have to play 'spot the difference' while you play 'hear the difference!'
I picked the Mk.1 platter up second hand for 50% cost of a new one. (£300).
Any difference is subtle, but there is a difference. IMHO, tThe biggest upgrade that you can do on a Technics is the arm.

Thanks, it doesn't look too bad considering I bought the deck itself in 1990!! I only had the stock arm before so I'm afraid I can't help with your question, but given just how much better than stock it sounds now, I'd bet it's a worthwhile improvement over the KAB too. However, I also took the opportunity to fit a Furutech ag-12 tonearm cable, and I haven't heard a rewired stock arm to compare. But having thought stock set up with the aid of the technics overhang gauge sounded pretty damn good, the improvement with the Jelco has surprised me :)

I think it"s the best cartridge I've heard. The sound is very life like with fantastic dynamics. The highs are great and the bass is deep and tight. Rally punchy bass. Especially drums and gitars is very very real. And the voices. All from female voices to male voice like Leonard Cohen is so dynamic and live. It"s really like having a singer in my living room.
The only cartridge I'll upgrade to is a better London Decca:) And I think it is perfect together with my modified 1210M5G.

Chris - How are you finding the cartridge combo regarding suface noise and ticks/clicks?
The majority of my collection is pre-used so this is an important element for me.
I found the Goldring 1042 MM for instance to be poor in this regard and seemed to highlight every defect.
A Denon 301 II LOMC is the oposite and seems to ignor all but the worst faults.
I am using a Transfi-Audio "Terminator" linear tracking Arm. Vic the designer uses London Decca. I am also looking at a Croft Pre/phono and Glen Croft is also supposed to be a fan of London Decca. So that combination of Cartridge/Arm/Phono might be something special depending on the cartridges ability to play less than perfect vinyl.

Hi Ken.
I don´t have that many cartridges to compare the Decca to, but compared to the Ortofon 2M Black it´s about the same. And I didn´t find the 2M Black too bothered by clicks. Compared to the Denon DL-103R, the Denon is better, but also not as extended in the treble as the London and the 2M Black. I have never heard the old Deccas and haven´t really heard alot of cartridges at all. I have only had 7 cartridges in a year. Well, that might be many in one year, but those are the only ones I´ve had:)
The London Decca Super Gold compared to the 2M Black is very close in sound quality, I think. The 2M Black is a little brighter (not much) and a little more forward. The 2M Black has the singer a little closer to the microphone and the Decca has a deeper soundstage. The Decca is more dynamic and the bass is also a little deeper. The 2M Black´s bass is maybe a little tighter, but I could be mistaking because of the deeper bass from the Super Gold.

Nice Adam, I like the smooth graphite finish - cool. How would you describe the presentation of the Quintet red ?
Very very good looking:eyebrows: I almost bought the same tonearm. What do you think of it?
Thanks. I'll let you know what I think of the tonearm next week. I'll also let you know why I am delaying my response. It's all good though ;-)
How would you describe the presentation of the Quintet red ?
Well this was my first Low Output moving coil so I may not be able to being completely objective. I'd used the ortofon MC range in the 90's but for the last few years stuck to moving magnet. I'm a big fan of the AT95E even though it costs about as much as a mars bar!
I'm ultra fussy about maintaining the neutrality of my system and if I ever get a whiff that an upgrade / downgrade is having a tonal effect I'm very careful about keeping it in place and often either revert the change completely or tweak something else to counter!
-
I listen to many styles between Miles Davis and Mastodon and for me the quintet nails it. Considering it's relatively low price I am amazed.
It sounded amazing brand new but after about a week it was singing. In terms of IGD it performs about 90% as well as the AT95E but in fairness the Audio Technica is hard to beat in that respect. The quintet is still stellar on 9 out 10 records.
So to summarise - NEUTRAL with more detail retrieval than anything I've used before. Sorry I can't be any more descriptive than that.
I'm curious to see how long it lasts given that I play vinyl daily. If it lasts a year I may step up to the blue or bronze next year!

Firstly. thanks to DSJR for posting this pic for me... its difficult to teach an old carthorse to hurdled fences at the National but I can do things like mental maths without the aid of a calculator .
Very observant of you Andre, it is indeed a Mk1 Ekos which J7/AO has worked on for me, Kondo silver wiring, slight internal damping etc. I bought the Isokenetic c/wt to use on my Jelco 750D but out of curiosity thought I would see if it could work with my Ekos. It did, much to my surprise, and I liked the result, plus I like to be different from the herd. There is a catch with the c/wt when used on a Linn arm and that it weighs in a 170g thus a lighter pickup cartridge needs balancing out at its end and secondly it needs some pillar height so as not to foul the arm collar. I'm okay because you can see my platter is tall. I prefer this arm combo to my Jelco, both were mounted on my Techy (not at the same time) but my AO/Ekos is my preference arm choice. Also, notice that the centre of gravity is now lower and the c/wt is closer to the pivot. Armboard is a Speedy Steve's Mpingo African hardwood, also have an ebony for my Jelco.

Very nice 😉
Nice one, Ron. It's the exact same counterweight balance as is fitted to my Ortofon RS-212D tonearm. Both items are made by Jelco. Interesting that it fits your Ekos, which could suggest that it too was produced by the Jelco factory, despite being touted by Linn as a Glasgow-built product....
I'm sure your Techy sounds fab (and I like how you've modded it in your own way - respect). Would love to hear it sometime!

Nice one, Ron. It's the exact same counterweight balance as is fitted onto my Ortofon RS-212D tonearm. Both items are made by Jelco.
I thought it was at first but dismissed that, drawing a blank just thinking maybe it was a bespoke counterbalance weight.. like you i doubted it would fit the 'Ekos'.. very interesting..
Aye Ron i got out my way to be different anorl.. :eyebrows:
I believe Jelco made all the Ittoks and I also think the very first Ittok-esque arm was a short-lived Jelco (designed by Ito-San?) that Linn may have bought the rights to. [edit] A VERY long time ago and this arm's roots may be partly buried as is the real LP12 direct ancestry
I also seem to remember Linn saying that the last Ittok LVIII's were the same as the first Ekos arms (colour aside). If this is true, then how come the all but doubling of the price from LVIII to Ekos? Many early Ekos arms suffered glued-up bearings too and Linn replaced these for a while, but charged a small fortune thereafter (I don't know if Ron's arm had iffy bearings, but glad it's been breathed on by someone who knows them intimately).
Back in the dark ages, we sold Ittoks to go on all sorts of decks from the Systemdek and Logic 101, but also the Luxman PD-300 (IIRC) and even a Thorens 160 and Axis... No reason at all why an Ekos shouldn't be used with a Techie if the arm-board is carefully selected.
The interesting thing though, Dave, is that doesn't it have 'Made in Scotland' written on the Ekos arm-base? I seem to remember that it does... If so, one would have to cast some doubt over that, as the last time I looked Japan wasn't in Scotland... :hmm:
Marco.

Aye Ron i got out my way to be different anorl.. :eyebrows:
I was also surprised that the c/wt would fit on the Ekos arm wand but it slips on without too much play allowing movement back and forwards and being low slung it can be moved sideways but the knurled wheel at the top is gently pinched after the arm has been balanced. This is alot easier than Linn's own c/wt. Once the Iso is correctly and vertically secured, grub screw gently nips security of weight, there is no likelyhood of it drifting, unlike say the Jelco's c/wt. The Ekos is the arm I have lived with for along time so I know its strengths and weaknesses well. I like the fact that cartridge tracking weight can be dialled in (always and independently check with a stylus balance gauge) as well as anti skate. All this makes life easy. On my particular specimen both tracking and anti skate are more or less spot on and confirmed by using ones lug holes for the final okay. It was sure luck and not design that this combo worked for me as I was fully expecting it to be a 'don't go there' exprience... just goes to show that sometimes experimenting is a good thing and to go against what is taken in the gospels of HiFi
I don't discuss my system much on here, not because I don't luv ya all brudders and sisters, but I use 30 year old classic Naim gear (there are those out there who go apoplectic at the mere mention of the N brand) which I have slowly tweaked, see oak feet for starters, came about because I got pissed off with the supplied rubber feet going flat and split with age so on a whim replaced with RA oak cones, no more probs with feet and they sounded better too.
I have recently changed caps (to Kendeil) and regulators in my pre-amp psu and the pre-amp itself has new 'made in the USA' boards which I'm breaking in. I'm very enthusiastic about these changes I have made. Also, contrary to Naim's own dictum, I use non-naim interconnects, UK made and not expensive... I'm becoming a rebel, vote for me on 7th May!

Dave, I sent my arm to Johnny Neilsen/Ao who checked everything out and did the mods for me and gave all a clean bill of health... You may remember I bought this arm off a mutual friend (Paul) in Luton when he switched to a V5?
I think Linn never gave due credit to the likes of Jelco for their work on badged Linn arms, same goes for non-accreditation of Tom Fletcher for the Naim Aro I would say, they did borrow one from Tom and told him a uni-pivot wouldn't work, lurvelly innit!
A hardwood arm board on a Techy is mandatory for a Linn arm, I also use one inconjunction with a neoprene 1mm gasket twix arm plate and chassis. The Linn arms were designed to go with LP12's own composite lossy armboard after all.

I am informed by someone who knows about such things ;) that the Ittok was designed by Fidelity Research; and it may have been built by a division of Denon. Look at the Ittok's construction and design elements and you will see its parentage quite clearly.
Regarding your other points regarding the Ittok and Ekos, Johnnie at Audio Origami would be the man to confirm if there's truth in what you say.

Impeccable taste as anticipated by me! How do you think about the copper/ally MN platter? I think there are not many of them around since the Funk MkI and MN ETP received rave reviews by AOS members. I personally dislike "plastic" platters and also think that the high mass of the metal platter is beneficial to the sound. The only fly in the ointment is a slight tendency of the platter to ring when tapped (and of course when playing music!). I suspect al ot of enthusiasm for the ETP an Funk is the better damping of said platters.
Do you think the Oyaide rubber mat helps here? I'm using a Boston mat 1 (graphite) but the ringing is still there.
Anyway good to hear (read) from you again.
Michael
PS.: The chrome bumper Naim amps were their best and most involving, I fondly remember the goosebumps I got when listening to music reproduced through a Nait1!

Thanks Keiron,
It just came down to 'synergy' with amps and speakers (active).
I have a Sondek (amongst others) but it is now bettered by the Technics.
After much swapping of arms, carts, bearings etc etc I finally have the Technics in a pretty awesome place sonically and to be honest I'm not sad to leave the Sondek behind!

Yes, it's from Jelco's 'high-end division', the same as my Ortofon RS-212D. Lovely arm, Darren. I applaud your lateral thinking in buying something different from the boring 'usual suspects' from SME, Rega, etc.
Enjoy!

Very tidy! Is that a leather mat? I really like that white. It makes a good contrast - far better than the faux silver.

Yes, it's a leather mat. Made by someone who was on the Wam and ebay (Mr Colmondley Warner? I can't trace him any more). I have openly admited in the past that I can't hear differences between mats...but these look nice and seem to keep static in check!
It's actually less white than it looks in the picture - more of a cream in reality. I have to say, whereas the pics of my wood version were flattering, these pics don't do it justice! Everything is gleaming new and I have to say i'm very happy.
The cart isn't run in yet and I've only listened to a few LPs but so far, so good.

I can only repeat what's been said, yes it was easy :) I was guided through the electronics of it by Qwin on another thread. In an ideal world, I'd have liked to have changed the start/stop/33/45 push buttons for something more traditional and tactile, but I was wisely advised here that it's not as straightforward as I had hoped.
Ah, so Qwinny's work was your reference point? No worries. It's something that I also want to have done later on, as it tidies up the aesthetics of the T/T, as well as removing some unnecessary 'gubbins', which I guess can't do any harm :)

You can always unplug the cue lamp and the pitch fader (altough you'd need a jumper to do this) to see if it sonically makes any difference, if not, plug them back in again. Altough I must admit the Mk5 is too blingy for my liking.

Yup, if I was going to do it, I'd have a complete new paint job done - maybe a plain piano black... Although I hate bling, I quite like a 'sheen' on the finish of T/T plinths, which is one of the reasons why I chose the MK5G :)

Did that, dude, and couldn't hear any difference. The exercise would mainly be about removing stuff that wasn't necessary, and 'tidying up' the top plate.
Interesting that you find the MK5G blingy. I don't at all, and I hate bling! Perhaps it's because there's no shiny gold bits, which is what I hate the most!

ok, if you can't hear a difference that's fair enough. I just think the top plate looks too fussy with all those extra buttons and I don't like the "cool" blue LEDs, I'm afraid I like the old school green and red, that's just my personal taste.
I agree about the top-plate being too 'fussy', but then I feel that way about all SL-1200/1210s, even the MKIIs. I find the finish on the matt black top-plate of those a bit drab (and I think blue lights on black look more striking than green), but hey, like you say, it's a personal taste thing :)

It's about time that we had some new mods to play around with. I think the only thing I'd change on mine now would be the platter mat, I'd like to try something like what you have, otherwise I'm happy with everything else.
Lol - new mods to play with? Nah, I'm quite happy to forget tweaking now and just enjoy the music! My Techy is at the stage of 'job done'. I suspect you're more of a 'tinkerer' than I am :eyebrows:
I thoroughly recommend the Nagaoka glass mat, if you can find one - just ekes out more music and sounds more natural than any other mat I've used.

The problem with black is dust! In terms of appearance, my preference was for a black Jelco arm, but I just couldn't be done with dusting it every other day (I don't use a lid).
Yup, I agree. The best solution for me, which I do when I remember, is just place the lid on top, when the T/T is not in use, and then lift it off (rather than it being fixed to the hinges) when I want to use it.
Trouble is, 70% of the time I forget to do that!

Good to hear from you. Nice one, mate. I thought that might be the case, as the Techniboots would've been damping some resonances, present in the signal path, which now don't exist with the ETP in situ. Therefore, there's no point in damping what isn't there! ;)

Nothing spectacular to look at right now (apart from the Audiomods tonearm, which is currently back on my TecnoDec). Mods as shown (though not all visible):
Funk Firm Achromat 1200
Origin Live armboard
Audiomods Classic tonearm
Michell clamp
Isonoe feet (silver)
I went back to the TecnoDec because it sounds better than the Technics even with these mods. That said, I'm thinking of giving the Technics another whirl with some further mods, since setting the speed with the TecnoDec is kind of a PITA (involves unscrewing the power supply and making an adjustment inside of it while the damned thing is plugged in, kind of unnerving, and doesn't stay put over time). I was all ready to finally buy an Applied Fidelity bearing until I discovered today that Jim Howard passed away last week after a struggle with cancer. I may try the KAB power mods first if I can't find a more budget-friendly bearing option.
Before any of that, though, I'm going to tinker more with the armboard. The mounting hardware that came with the Origin Live armboard provided no stability, and I ended up bending a couple of the provided washers since they were a bit too small and I couldn't get any rigidity without audible rattling. I asked them about the puny hardware, and they said it was necessary for best sound quality results. That lack of reliable stability drives me nuts, though. I have a sheet of Herbie's thin grungebuster that I'm going to try using as a gasket between the armboard and deck, and possibly as extra washers between the armboard/deck and bulkier mounting hardware seen in this photo. It might be better, it might be worse, or it might make no difference at all, leaving me with other issues needing to be addressed to try to get the sound a little closer to the TecnoDec without speed uncertainty. Anyone else done something special with the armboard mounting hardware?
Oh yeah, and I do have a large metal washer as a spacer between armboard and arm base so that I can use the finger VTA lock (I tended to over-tighten the shorter lock when using a hex wrench), though this puts the arm high enough that no VTA adjustment is actually needed.
Hi there Packgrog (strange given name!;))
I was wondering if there are differences between the arm board for the Audio Mods or any other Rega Based arm?
I have an SL-1210 MkII with the Origin Live armboard and an Audio Origami RB-250.
My problem with this combo is that it may be a bit too firmly attached to the Techy chassis? They are attached like in a vice!
I am still not convinced on the Techy and very much prefer either my OrbeSE or vintage Linn Sondek LP-12's
Keep us posted!

I believe that Jeff from Audiomods uses SoundSupports armboards, or at least seems to prefer them. It uses the standard Rega mounting distance even though the effective arm length is slightly different (simply means that Rega protractors don't work for it). I went for the OL board because I wanted to use a shim to allow me to use the finger VTA lock, and the SoundSupports boards, while less expensive, don't have as much room for shims. Probably should have just gotten a flat plate with the Rega mounting hole, but this was also more just an experiment. If I commit to just the Technics, I'll get the arm modded for the Technics-specific micrometer & integrated armboard. I'm just not at the point yet where I feel confident that the Technics will sound good enough to make a permanent change to my precious tonearm. :P
As far as the "firmly attached" issue, that's part of what I'm hoping to address with the grungebuster gasket experiment, which I'll hopefully find time to attempt this weekend. Perhaps it will be too much damping, I don't know. Can't hurt to try.

Interesting... Are those Vibro-Stop mats solid acrylic, or do they seem to be the hard foam consistency of the Achromat? In other words, is it kind of lightweight foamboard with bubble holes visible along the outer edge, or is it solid, heavier plastic-y material?

Hi Packgrog. The platters seem to be solid acrylic, they are pretty weighty.

Hey Keiron99,
Yes the platter has been sprayed black. It does make it look quite clean and minimal.

Hello.
My name is Miljen, and I would like to introduce my Technics.
It's basically 1210MK2, and I've bought it from previous owner with custom tonearm and tonearm base. The tonearm is vintage Micro Seiki MA701, with custom fixed aluminium headshell made on CNC machine based on the original MS headshell.
Tonearm has been rewired with Cardas wires, and there is no breakage in wires from cartridge to DIN connector. Previous owner turned off pitch and light. I don't like how it was painted, but I'll deal with it in next few months. Techie came with thick rubber mat, but I've bought Reso-mat in hope to achieve better sound. I've also ordered Origin live damping feet. I currently don't have money to buy new platter or bearing, but I think these few little thing will make sound better. When I bought the turntable, the seller sold with it an old MC cartridge Ortofon MC15 Super II. It was a good cartridge in it's days but it's really old so I've ordered Nagaoka MP110, since I didn't have enough money to by 200, not to mention 300 or 500. But I think that MP200 stylus could be attached to 110 body, so in the future it gives me reasonable upgrade possibility.
My phono preamp is ProJect PhonoBox II USB, and it really isn't good, especially with MC cartridge. Thinking of buying Schiit Mani, and use only MM cartridges. It seems really good for only 130$.
I am open to suggestions regarding upgrades, changes, etc ...

Thanks, I love my SL but have always liked the look of some of the classic turntables. So this was my inexpensive way of getting both in one turntable!

That sound support tonearm mount can be bettered. I used to have one then went to the solid copper version from Mike New which was a big upgrade and then finally ended up with a solid ebony mount from Speed Steve of Magma Audio, the detail retrieval went up a whole level. Well worth the dosh.
Thanks REXTON for the information I'll check it out.

+1 - The ebony armboard is excellent. Must be something to do with it being wood which in my experience tends not to add any 'unatural', 'metallic' or 'coloured / resonance flavour' to the sonics like some other materials can.
Quality item !

Kevin,
One last final tip. I'd ditch the granite. I've also messed around with more turntable stand than I care to remember. Mass is probably good for sprung decks like the LP12 but not so good for the 1210. Granite rings like a behatch IMHO. You could probably do better experimenting with bamboo. My personal favourite is bamboo chopping boards from IKEA although Dunhelm also do something similar, you'll also get more out of your deck if you mount the chopping board on spikes or ball bearings!

A
Hey Andrew
I have been in contact with Steve and will have an arm board coming soon.
When I had a vintage set up I had a walnut turntable surround and isolation platform made.
The isolation platform is 2"x15 1/2"x19 1/2" MDF with walnut veneer switching from the granite made a noticeable improvement

Great news. You can squeeze a little more out of your deck by putting some ebony footers under the isonoe feet. See post #364 https://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?9568-Me-and-the-1210-are-gunna-have-us-some-me-time/page8

I also approve of your choice of headshell. Those ATs are beautifully engineered:)
Marco.
Thanks Marco. It's taken with the ubiquitous iPhone.
It's a shame my AT33PTG/11 doesn't look right fitted to the AT headshell.

Had another fiddle with the SL1210. Litz wired and damped externally and internally the full tonearm. Love the sound better than my Jelco arm so its staying on for a bit. Got a nice guy in Scotland Neil at Technics Worx to make some tonearm base plates and they make all the difference as you can now use your own interconnects.
Anyway a few pics
