New Job in the New Year

Hi Guys

Well, after a bit of a stress filled year I have just handed in my notice to work and accepted a position with a new company.
I very nearly accepted a position with a company in Chelmsford earlier in the year.
The position was great but the move and relocation were just not right. Not an easy position to turn down as it was going back to the Semiconductor industry that I loved.

My new job starts in the New Year, January 6th with Air Products, it is a local position.
Air Products have nearly completed the building of their Advanced Gasification Energy from Waste plant, it uses an Oxygen Plasma to burn the waste.
It is a brand new plant for me to play with, we also get to commission the site too, which I am massively looking forward to.
Then maintain it afterwards. So I am sorry to leave my current job, but the pull of this new position is just too great.

I have added a photo of me at work in my current (only just) job.
I am standing in front of an Open Tap hole on a Blast Furnace, still one of the biggest in Europe.
I have just been working on the Tap Hole Drill which is drilling out the open tap hole, it worked as it should too, which was a complete surprise to me.
Something I will not be doing too many more times.

Cheers for your kind comments, looking forward to my new start.
I do have a few more shifts to do yet.

Quite a dangerous place to be, where I am stood (The cast house floor)
The previous day I was passing through the area when they had a 'Wild Tap Hole, never seen anything quite so spectacular.
Think of a massive fireworks sparkler, but made of molten Iron
Molten Iron spitting out the tap hole and reaching about 30m high and a similar distance out over.
Didn't hang about long, you could follow me by the Brown streak I left behind myself.

Didn't spot that one earlier, though it will be first thing I look at whenever I go onto the Cast House Floor from now on.

Eee bah gum Andy, that pic brings back memories for me - my first job was as a Junior Operative (don't ask ;) ) around the blast furnaces at Renishaw Iron Co. - now long gone and replaced by a housing estate - if only the house owners knew half of what lies under their houses :stalks: . I saw quite a few runaway tap holes and even put the odd shovelful of ganister in the gun ready for the next use but only for the experience, the guys were a rough and ready lot but would not let me get too involved. Thedy drank fantastic amounts of tea I remember and guess who did a lot of walking between furnace cabin and geyser :rolleyes: .
I quickly got a job in the works laboratory and it all went downhill from there ;) .
IIRC drilling out the fresh taphole could get quite 'interesting' as well.
All the best for your new job - quite a pleasant change from round a blast furnace I would expect :) .

I can't imagine what it was like and I have no wish to experience anything like it !

It is quite an impressive sight to see, as there is no instant fix to a Wild Tap Hole.
I am no expert on the process side but it requires a steady nerve and time to vent furnace pressure and run the Tap Hole Drill back through open Tap Hole.
Quite a sight, one I will in all probability never see again.

I think one your better decisions in life was to go and work in the Labs
Working on the Cast House Floor is a hard job and all credit to the guys who work there too.
I am fortunate that I tend to only have short visits to the area and can escape fairly quickly after the job is fixed (well usually anyway)

The plant known as TV1 takes 350,000 tons of waste (which would normally be sent to land fill) and converts it to electrical energy of about 50mW.
There is a by product which is tapped out of the base of the gasification vessel which is used by the construction industry.

Sounds like we should have more of them

From what I know this is the first of it's kind.
A second plant is due to be built as the first is completed.
All the waste, Domestic, Business and Commercial comes from local sources, so good for the area.
Really looking forward to being involved with this plant, the people and company.
I am turning out to be a advert for Air Products here, but can't wait to start.
