Im not that old mid 40's but over the last four/five years i find i am totally useless in everything i do, i used to be a superb Cabinet makers years ago, these days i'll most times muck a job up, make it too small, chip the wood im working with etc, it generally ends up in the bin...

I was cleaning the turntable the other day & accidently caught the Style tip not paying attention, within seconds i snap & put my fist through the arm, bent it in half  This pretty much is the same with anything i do these days.. Is it an age thing where you hit a certain age where things don't matter so much etc etc?

I don't want to get to the stage where i won't do anything in the house anymore, buy run of the mill cheap tack items for easyness sake, that would not be me..A a side note I'm totally totally intollerant of people & their views but that's an ingrained thing & don't think that has anything to do with it.. :eyebrows:

I've always been cack-handed. If anything, I'm less likely to break things these days as i'm more aware of my ineptitude and thus more careful. If I want cabinets making, I pay someone to make them for me!

The excersize of the thread is to ask if anyone is simular to me in around four/ five years ive gone from a very handy perfectionist to someone that does not care about anything nor has any patience with anything..

Nah then Conan ;) ,
IMHO for someone of your youth (I'm over 70 so am allowed to say that  ) to lose all that hard earned skill in such a short time must be worrying and I wouldn't think it's totally to be expected. I would expect it to be a bit like riding a bike, once you've got the skill you don't lose it. Seems it goes with a much shorter fuse as well, again not to be expected - all this IMO and I'm no medic but I do have some experience of mild depression. Have you thought about having a chat with your GP or maybe even the works doctor if they still exist?
If there is an underlying problem it ain't likely to get better by ignoring it - perhaps time to admit that you are too close to the problem to be looking at it realistically?
Just trying to help, not 'teach Grandma ....
Take care,
Dave.

Yes,I know that one too well...and Ive also realised that because Ive travelled and been around a lot, been rich, been poor, been happy, been sad, been high and been depressed,in the great scale of things, nothing really matters that much.No matter what problems we have, there is always someone that would just LOVE to be us!!!and Ive also become a hoarder!!...as far as patience is concerned, realising that the older we get,the less time we have left,so its easy to be impatient as time becomes important.

I will say this, the thoughtfulness and generosity you have lavished on your disabled friend speaks volumes to me, try extending that to other people.

Some people can be complete twats straight off the bat but they are a rare breed. In general what most of us want is to be understood and perhaps receive a little empathy when we are feeling low. Keeping the world at arms length doesn't work, it will stay right where it's put. There aren't many people I know who would go out of their way to be kind to someone who is being anti-social, so consequently a chicken and egg situation develops wherefore the person being anti-social ends up blaming their predicament on the world at large, which can, given time, lead to further withdrawal and feelings of inadequacy. This is an unacceptable situation for such people so often this leads to bouts of extreme anger. Meanwhile an estranged world stares nonchalantly back from a distance which just adds fuel to the fire. I live by this mantra: Treat others how you would wish to be treated. Also, nostalgia is a wonderful thing but in extremis it can totally f**k you up.

p.s. Tolerance is such an ugly word, it is also a double-edged sword...

I used to do a lot of things, (DIY - Car Mechanics etc) some I succeeded at, some I f*cked up badly, but it was fun trying. Forward about 40 years and I now only do something if I know I will have the right tools and enough knowledge and time. I find that when I do stuff for my son I am much more focused and concerned about doing a good job, than if I am doing it for myself, consequently it normally goes ok. As I get older I get more intolerant. Most people talk BS, love the sound of their own voice and so full of themselves that they ignore the body language screaming at them "you are boring me to death - piss off". I find that I can only do conversations in "sound bites" so if I am giving you short sharp answers, don't keep crapping on as though it is the most interesting thing I am likely to have ever heard!

O yes but that is more obsessive with me than you can ever believe,Dave. Nearly 7 weeks ive been sat here fuming like a bull because i cannot get hold of a 1960's Teak side board :steam:

It's is of the upmost importance for me to kit my surroundings out with lagit 1960's artifacts.. When money is short his fuels my fire even more.. I am more than happy to throw High quality sound reproduction for the sake of a 1960's piece of Audio, it's the looks & quality over sound with me.. Strange from some to comes to terms with but that's how it is..

I reckon you lot are just 'male menopausal'! ;)

Not to mention that most of you are probably quite a bit younger than me. I don't do as much as I used to, but I don't cock things up.

This I think is a regression to what you perceive as possibly "happier times" , which you now look back at with rose tinted glasses and has become your current security blanket which keeps the modern world at bay. I know someone who is fixated with the 1950s era even though they are far too young to experience that period for themselves. Maybe the absence of modern trappings like plastic or colour televisions and the general throwaway consumerism we suffer from today may play a part too. Cars were a doddle to fix, you could easily fill the tank for a fiver and get change, you could walk down any high street and night and emerge at the other end unscathed. Back then there was no chipboard that fell apart when it got wet, or was a pig to put a screw into, it was mostly SOLID wood or at least substantial plywood with a decent veneer on. Life was simpler, people actually SPOKE to you.

I am guilty of that to a degree looking back to the 70's when dancing came naturally with no effort, pulling birds was easy and getting laid was a lot more frequent

Maybe you have been apprenticed into the Grumpy Old Git Club :ner:

It seems to me that smashing your tone arm because you accidentally caught the stylus is an over reaction and could be seen as caring too much rather than too little. Age can give you a better perspective on things, you've probably noticed that things that appeared important when you were, say, seven now seem totally trivial. Maybe if you reach 60 you'll laugh at this incident
