I'd just like to say I've had the 306, 606, and now the 909. In terms of volume, not much difference between them - just a little more weight to the sound from the 606 and 909.
I'd say the 606 mk II would be a better choice than the first version, but the 909 was my choice because it's newer and wouldn't need recapping for some time.
I'm currently selling a recapped 306 and will say that it compares very favourably.

hi
yeah i've seen your 306 and i really like its looks but wondered about it in terms of power. though they're high efficient, i realized that the altecs 15" need some power to really blossom.

The 306 puts out 50w at 8 ohms, 70w at 4ohms.
I've just seen the specs for your speakers and would say you need more power than either the 606 or 909.

I used to have a Bryston 4BST, which is in a different league to Quad, and if I were you I'd be looking at something like that to power them - 300w into 8ohms and used by a lot of pro recording studios. I had a pair of ATC SCM 20's which are quite fussy and found they only started to sing when driven with a high power amp like the Bryston. Expensive, but they come with a 20 year warranty !

hmmm, interesting. funny as some say i won't need so much power and others the exact contrary
a bryston3 was a possible lead, as there was one unit for sale in my area, then people started to say: you need the much better ST version, others said the 4ST and here we jumped well over 1K amps...
