I am being used at the moment as a "guinea pig" to evaluate a brand new interconnect cable. It is in prototype form at the moment and the final version promises to be much better than what I have here. Bring it on!!!! Even so, the cable I currently have is way up there with the very best of them and this is someone who has played with a good few high end cables in my time and NONE have come close to what I am listening to as I type this brief ditty.

Unfortunately it has no name yet so I can only refer to it as "Cable X" or somesuch in the meantime :eyebrows:

I don't even have an inkling over cost, not even a ballpark figure. Given how much I am impressed by what I am hearing I intend to be first in the queue when that has been decided. It really is a game-changing design for sure and to be 100% truthful and honest here, I cannot believe how much my old, obsolete and dare I say it "humble" system in the signature below has been improved by this bloomin cable and I realise just how much I am sticking my neck out in saying that

Yes indeed Dave, our very own MCRU no less.

It's not the first "mystery" cable he has sent me to evaluate - the last one was not very pleasing to say the least :( I have no idea why he has picked me to do this, maybe I have golden ears, or my time in the trade enables me to sort wheat from the chaff, or I just say it like it is - I wasn't too complimentary about a couple I have listened to and no surprise they haven't appeared as regular products on his website.

This latest one is a doozy, trust me on this and I would advise you to form an orderly queue cos it's a real belter! Nor is it just another forum hype sort of product that will fizzle out in a couple of weeks/months time.

I am not talking about some minor or marginal changes here and at long last I think we should shove it in front of the "I cant hear a difference with cables" brigade and we can legitimately call them deaf if this cable doesn't penetrate their grey matter as it has mine.

Here is my honest appraisal of these "mystery" interconnects:

I will say this is one of the hardest appraisals I have ever had to do, not that I have not been impressed by what these mystery cables offer in sound quality terms, more the sheer inadequacy of the English language in expressing what I am hearing and not falling into using the same all too often used superlatives that have little meaning now due to their over usage, therefore I will leave all the gilding off and use language more familiar.

CONSTRUCTION
All I have is a rather nondescript pair of black shrouded interconnects with what feels like a plaited multi-conductor construction. I have been given no indication as to what materials have been used.

SOUND
All too often I will be impressed initially by a cable on first hearing and then once the initial euphoria has waned, I then begin to find weaknesses that were not immediately apparent at first hearing. It is for that reason that I prefer to wait at least a whole day BEFORE any opnions are formulated.

So, how do they stack up? Firstly, I will deal with the bass registers. I cannot detect any bass overhang with them at all. Bass certainly is fullsome and very powerful with superb definition and timbre. In most other cables I have heard regarding bass performance, it is without exception traded off in other areas like treble or midrange, or worse still, swamps, muddies and overwhelms the other frequency bands. Not so at all with this cable; the bass is almost "detached" (in a positive way) from the other frequencies, so any bass line is easy to follow as a seperate entity if one so wishes, without ever disturbing or imposing itself elsewhere in the audible spectrum. Whatever CD I played I could easily follow the bass lines without bloom or smearing - even the favourite tracks I have heard many thousands of times before over the years. I have just listened to Focus' "Anonymus II" and it has completely blown me away with the clarity, dynamics a sheer raw energy this track contains, which all too often even high end systems manage to turn into a mushy cacophany. Pink Floyd's "Wall" album has within the title track a tambourine well back in the mix that most systems allow it to fade in and out, especially when the dynamics get hectic, but this cable allows you to hear that tambourine so clearly and consistently right the way through no matter what else is going on in the music. Get the LP/CD out now and listen out for that tambourine in the background! So just for one moment I will add the typical cliche about hearing so, so, so, so much more from very familiar recordings I have owned for close on 40 years and more, played on some esoteric systems too. From a mere cable? Yep, no doubt whatsoever, it has 'upgraded' my own humble system by no small margin and that really is hard for people to swallow I will readily concede, but true it certainly is.

Likewise, the midband and treble registers operate within their own distinct "pockets" within the sound envelope. Treble is so "clean" and truthful with no ringing or splashiness, ambience details are conveyed so crisply and accurately it's uncanny to say the least. Imaging construction is deep from front-to-back, tall top to bottom and way out beyond the speakers. A struck cymbal sounds exactly like a struck cymbal SHOULD do, full of energy and vibrancy, anyone can clearly hear wooden drumstick against metal, a struck triangle sounds so exquisite it makes you feel like rewinding again and again to simply enjoy that delicious sound! Live recorded music is live in every sense of the word with venue ambience and reverb stunningly recreated and it is shocking to hear that an audience actually SOUNDS like an audience instead of sounding like a frying pan cooking bacon rashers. This is further enhanced by the lack of any background noise, which I think is THE hardest parameter to achieve in a cable design with any pretensions to being high end.

SUMMARY
Make no mistake, this cable is certainly no "tone control" whereby you could use it to correct shortfalls or inadequacies in your hi-fi system. It does not have good bass at the expense of a muted or stinging treble, or vice versa. Top to bottom it excels in all areas of the audible spectrum.

Given that there are countless cables available to spend your hard-earned on, where in the great scheme of things would this cable rank amongst the herd? I have had through my hands over the years some cables costing many hundreds of pounds per metre and I cannot think of a single one gone before that had the performance this cable has. Sure, some had bass or treble performance to die for, but SOMEWHERE there was a trade-off, nor can I think of a single one that could match the eerie background silence this cable has and as for picking out the finest minutae in recordings and painting aural pictures in the air, none come even close. The one area where it does get it's backside slapped hard is the appearance. I quizzed David Brook about that and he tells me what I have here is only a prototype with inexpensive plugs fitted and the production version will get top end Furutechs. That addition would make this cable legendary I reckon.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion then, in my opinion this cable effectively re-writes interconnect cable design in a radical way and the industry leaders should begin perspiring now. It does not act as a notch filter or tone control, it offers no hindrance to what a hi-fi system is actually capable of, it has no sonic signature of it's own to worry about and ends the search for "synergy" because there are no peaks or troughs to synergise with. I will finally say that I don't intend to persuade anyone else to put their hand in their pocket to purchase one on my say-so alone, as I will be doing that myself - no matter what the final price tag is. For more information I would suggest you contact David at MCRU.

When word gets out just how good these cables really are, then kindly remember you heard it here first.

I sent 2 of these interconnects out, one to Frank and another to a local audiophile chap in Shipley, luckily what I heard when I plugged them in is the same as what Frank and Andy heard,
early days yet but the design of the cable has been patented and I had to sign a NDA with the "inventor" of the cable design who lives in Huddersfield and who I met quite by chance.

Yes "inventor" because it is just that, a completely new design that will blow your socks off, any way, enough for now and form an orderly queue please because you will be amazed.

I can honestly say that no other cable EVER has got me this fired up about it's performance. Yes I have heard a huge number that had some great attributes but all had some form of shortcoming (subtle admittedly), yet I can't find any at all with this cable - it excels in all areas.

How much does your system cost? How much would a better component cost to make a sizeable upgrade to the sound? If you went from a £1000 amp to a £3000 amp it wouldn't even come close from the performance uplift gained. From a CABLE?????? In that context it is a bargain - even though I don't know it's projected cost.

I did say above that I really am sticking my neck out with such bold and radical statements, but made it I have, so I repeat:

As Oscar Wilde said: "The cynic knows the price of everything and the value of nothing."

I expect these cables to be expensive, very expensive; if their construction is patented they will have to be custom made. Nothing available from conventional cable manufacturers. They might even be hand made - and that's expensive!

As to their value - well, I'll wait and see what you all say after you have bought them and tried them out in your system. :eyebrows:

Everything is of course relative Dave and your jump from what you had before to what you have now with the RFC cable is not to be dismissed and have no wish to demean your choice.

My long years in the cable business means I probably have a far more discerning ear when it comes to wanky wires but even so I will hold my hands up and say that there is a point at which it is utterly unaffordable for me too and that threshold is quite low these days. I too may have to pass on them due to cost, BUT, the sound I am listening right now as I type this is truly unforgettable and NO cable will have that same stunning realism, dynamics and clarity that this "Cable X" has. So I have this torture going on in my mind currently that if I do pass because the price set is beyond my means, then I will find it hard going back to what I have in my current cables stash which isn't cheap by any means. I really hope I don't have to, but then again we may all be jumping to incorrect assumptions that the price will have more zeros that the Starship Enterprise's odometer

NOTHING in hi-fi is quantifiable, so unless you personally have spent around £2k on upgrading a single component in your system, then of course my statement could be construed as "meaningless". It isn't to me because I have done that many times and the law of diminishing returns quickly jumps into the equation. In THAT context if this blessed cable WERE to cost £2k, then yes it is a bargain because I suggest this cable doesn't play by the diminishing returns laws, whereas other cables with lofty price tags I have bought and sold, do.

Pricing has not been finalized yet, I sent the cables to Frank because I trust his judgment having
had various cables rejected by him in the past as not being good enough! The treatment he is
receiving is not fair really as he has only reported what he is hearing, as stated earlier the cable
is a totally new design which I came across purely by accident, it is a ground breaker but
enough of that for now, all I can say is wait until it is launched and try it for yourselves. It won't
be cheap but it certainly will not be stratospheric. :)

I fail to see why you should want it to be open to discussion or indeed have it open to objection when the post is simply about my opinion about this mystery cable I was sent to evaluate. In any other situation I could have easily compared it to X, Y, Z cables already on the market and perhaps owned by some of the good forum members here to set some sort of benchmark for comparison. You then only had to accept that A) My hearing acuity is such that I can discern what is a good, bad or indifferent cable and B) That in my opinion based upon what I am actually hearing that I rate it very highly and finally, C) That I have owned and listened to some very expensive cables that would enabled me to rank it amongst the herd, so my judgement is that it excels wat above those that I have heard. So from that point of view I simply HAD to let the world know that I had in my possession a cable that needs to be taken notice of because it is in my opinion rather special.

Your issue then is you are in the dark about it's likely cost (beyond my ken for the umpteenth time) and what it sounds like - or rather your view of it's sound. That will no doubt be revealed in due course when the cable is launched and at that point you should be able to hear it for yourself through a demo. David has already hinted above that:

"It won't be cheap but it certainly will not be stratospheric."

Frank. I think where you laid yourself open to criticism was describing this cable as a 'game changer'. I and others do regard cable differences to normally be rather small in comparison to upgrades in electronics and sources. Also though I don't doubt your sincerity this is about the effect in your particular set up presumably between your CD player and amp. The 'improvements' just may not be obtainable in another system especially one that majors on analogue rather than digital source.

Also given the history with products 'reviewed' by other 'buyers' from the supplier of the said cable there is an underlying degree of scepticism regarding any 'promotion' of said product outside of the trade section. Frank you do not have a track record in this area so I will take your enthusiasm as genuine, just don't expect a smooth ride when commenting here. I think the selling price to be important in the context of the cables relative performance in the market and would not be surprised that after adding designer plugs it will be fairly to very expensive.

I am saying to you all that this cable is far more than just subtle nuance/tonality changes that you are currently used to from cable changes.

David has sent me other products to evaluate blind and I was a tad harsh on those because I couldn't see a commercial product in them within a fiercely competitive marketplace, with new "revolutionary" products surfacing frequently now. Those other products have not seen the light of day.

You could of course argue that David has set me up as sort of patsy to gush florid volumes about this new mystery wanky wire into a pre-launch hype generation exercise. Without the experience I have, I could have done that easily for the other products evaluated, but I haven't and you will have to accept my word that those other products have sunk without trace because of my honesty. David isn't alone in sending out evaluation products to unsuspecting "guinea pigs" for their opinions - I myself did it when running Krystal Kables. And please don't pre-judge any "naivety" of mine because I have been in and out of the trade for more years than I care to remember..

Back to this cable then, when it arrived I was almost expecting yet another so-so product in the package with all the usual compromises in sound quality from origins unknown to me. I didn't know (and still don't) what the construction materials are, where the source is, plus of course the price, so I had no expectations of any kind. My attitude at the time was "Aw, do I have to do this?" and was inclined to leave it in the box, but when I plumbed it in, from the first note it just shone immediately. If only you could have been there at that moment, then you just might understand where this "game changer" statement originates from. And yes, I have tried the cable in a valve setup and a TEAC all-in-one with similar results.

Well, these aforesaid cables have been returned to MCRU and by heck I miss them :wah:

Now this is what is puzzling me:-:scratch::scratch::scratch::scratch:

I tipped the wink about the Belkin interconnects, how great they sounded and everyone rushed to buy them and praise upon praise was heaped on them. Delighted with them. Good old Frank. Never told anyone to buy them.

I put you onto the TQ speaker cables too and again a good number of you whizzed out and sploshed your hard earned on them - in fact you all overtook me and bought the top of the range models and thrilled to do so. Delighted with them. Good old Frank. Never told anyone to buy them.

I tip you the wink again that these interconnects are the best I have ever heard bar none and . . . . . derision, scepticism, my honesty is questioned, I am almost accused of being an MCRU stoolie, dumb questions about price I cannot answer and a couple of not so nice comments I will do best by not even mentioning.

Well, these aforesaid cables have been returned to MCRU and by heck I miss them :wah:

Now this is what is puzzling me:-:scratch::scratch::scratch::scratch:

Yes I went out and got myself a TQ dealership based on your say so and still have those belkin wires lying around somewhere (although I did put eichmanns on the ends which transforms them)

Meeting the inventor of the cable tomorrow so will report back afterwards, Andrew, what can Yannis offer as you don't know what these cables are made from and if Yannis's cables were that good you would have them already surely?

A bargain is defined by the expectations and performance versus the price. As an example my sparky is here currently wiring the furukawa cable for a 2nd dedicated mains spur, I consider the cable a bargain even if I had to pay £100 per metre for it because of what it sounds like.

We don't know if it's going to be a bargain though yet, Frank. :)

I can't wait to find out what witchcraft these IC's are. I've no doubt they are great as you have always (as been said) directed us a lot of great products Frank.

Thanks for that Joe :)

David is not revealing what figure he has in mind for these cables so all we can for now do is take his hint:

" . . . . it won't be cheap but it won't be stratospheric either"

Andrew, what can Yannis offer as you don't know what these cables are made from and if Yannis's cables were that good you would have them already surely?

This made me laugh out loud, where do you want me to start. Firstly I trust Yannis, my main system is completely decked out with his IC and tonearm cables, they ousted nordost stuff that cost thousands. Secondly, you can talk to Yannis and he can tailor specific characteristics of the cable to meet the demands of your system. As an example, he's interested in the exact model of my valve amp and the distance that they sit away from each other so he can get the capacitance (sic before I'm corrected) correct. He also talks himself out of money, he recommended several cables today which were considerably cheaper than what he could have sold me. Thirdly, you get technical explanation of what he's trying to achieve with the cable design. Fourthly you get excellent value for money. Fifth you don't get him using excessive techniques to flog cables at every oppotunity. The list could go on.

I'd like to see this patent. TBH once it's filed there is absolutely nothing stopping anyone copying the design at a knock down price. Good luck with that one.

If you have the money go for it, doubt you do though as I know how much the tooling and development costs were, if any one wants to copy someone elses design it may be possible but cheaper, don't make me laugh (which you do frequently)

Whoa there boy.

You say how excellent the Yannis products are and presumably that is because you have tried and experienced them yourself? Yes? So that is fine in your book, yet you readily denigrate others who have tried other products not by Yannis.

This section of the forum is called "Strokes of Genius" and it's purpose I believe is to let other AoS members know about their own experiences with products they deem to be excellent in either sound quality or value. Yes?

If you look closely in this section of the forum there are OTHER well respected people not just me that are equally enthusiastic about other products sourced from MCRU, so where do you get this absurd notion that there is "shilling" going on? Or are you saying that all these glowing testimonials are entirely fabricated to benefit MCRU?

If there is one thing I cannot abide it's dual standards.

I have no problem with this so as they are kept in the traders section. What happened hear is a clasisic case of generating a load of hype about a new product within a different forum area, clearly bypassing the rules of me forum. I'm pig sick of seeing The mcru sign everywhere.

I think David should consider this type of feedback from members very carefully. The bit in bold (over-promotion), I'm sorry, David, is an old story. You really must learn to rein in the overbearing salesmanship or unfortunately, mate, I will have to take some preventative action.

I've largely stayed out of this discussion, but have kept an eye on things from the sidelines, and regardless of how good these cables are, I too dislike threads like this (nothing at all against you Frank) where a 'lollipop is dangled in front of the kids', as it were, creating excitement, before the kids know if they can afford to take a lick...

Instead of exciting me about the product, it turns me off (as I dislike the hype, whether intentional or not), so therefore the whole exercise is counterproductive, especially now as other members are expressing their concerns, both in public and in private.

So, David, until you can spit out how much these cables are going to cost, I suggest that we leave this discussion as it is for now and update it when you are in a position to supply a price for the cables concerned, unless that is Frank has got anything more he wants to add?

Marco.

I really can understand the concerns of the folks on AoS who possibly accept that A) I am hearing what I hear with these cables and B) Have no motives for saying that they are superb when in fact to quote Marco, that it might only be "manufactured hype" to which I would be deeply offended. Yes of course there is benefits to MCRU from my appraisal, but I felt that was far outweighed by what I heard and what I believe is of benefit to those who like me want a cable that gives more than just subtle nuance, detail or tonality changes for what can be a considerable outlay elsewhere amongst it's rivals - which I have extensive experience of. I stand by that statement by virtue of the fact that I have written similar testimonials for the likes of Belkin, TQ and a few others besides over the years, which have directly benefited AoS members.

I hear all your concerns too about the projected/anticipated costs this cable might have, so can you all then imagine that being the person that HAS heard these cables first hand and the performance they provide, also has no clue whatsoever of what that cost might be? I will quote again Marco above by saying that I have licked the bloody lollipop and don't know if I can even afford to buy the flippin' stick it sits on

Marco
28-11-2013, 16:54
No problem, Frank. I'm fully aware that your thoughts on these cables are genuine and that your part in proceedings is simply that of an intrigued enthusiast. I also have little doubt that your findings are accurate, as I trust your ears in these matters.

However, I know that you can also see where I'm coming from. Therefore, until a price is provided by David for these cables, would you mind if we locked the thread, in order to prevent any further 'hype'?

Rest assured that the thread will be re-opened once a price has been given for these cables, whereupon the whole discussion will become more relevant for everyone :)
