..........piece of hi-fi gear without seeing what it looks like?

An advert needs a photo!!
Why, oh why do people place adverts for expensive and not so expensive equipment with no photographs?
I'm always amazed that people think it's too much bother to put a good picture of an item in an advert to give it the best possible chance of a sale.

It really isn't difficult to equip yourself with an account to a photo hosting website - honest, it really is simple!
We even have a member who has kindly offered to do it (http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?28171-I-m-happy-to-post-piccies-of-your-item-s-into-your-sales-thread) all for you!!!!!

Or, if you are a numpty like me, you can just add an attachment. I just don't seem to be able to get my stuff in Flickr to load properly although others seem to manage OK.

Talking of which, how do you delete old attachments?? I have some going back ages that are unlikely to be looked at again and I'm sure they are taking up valuable space.

Well then, daftee, don't use flickr! ;)

As far as I'm concerned, the de rigueur choices should be Imageshack or Photobucket - both of which are excellent (piss-easy to use), and from which I've never had a problem viewing the images hosted there.

Chris, I fully share your sentiments (and frustration). The simple answer to your question is sheer bloody laziness!!

Some folk will try and get away with the minimum effort possible to make a sale. The ones that get me most, though, are those who post in their ads something along the lines of: 'Pics available for those interested'. Fooking muppetry of the highest order! :mental:

Just maybe more folk would be interested if pics were supplied automatically in the first place?? Of course, what the lazy-arsed seller actually means is 'I can't really be bothered with the effort of posting pictures, but if you twist my arm, then I might consider it...'

Bugger that - get yer arse in gear, lift up that camera and take some fooking photos!!

As far as AoS and I are concerned, ALL ADVERTS placed in the classifieds section should automatically be accompanied by a picture of the item for sale, and preferably the actual item, owned by the seller, and not some generic image of it, stolen from the Web.

So.... If any member spots an ad here posted without a pic, then feel free to shove this smiley in their face:

:worthless:

Hopefully, they'll get the message!!

Marco.

What should I do, post all my bank details and PIN numbers on a respectable type .ru forum and let you take whatever the mystery item is worth?

It's bloody annoying and pretty stupid if they want to make a sale. BTW the relevant smiley appears to have disappeared from the inbuilt list.

Yup, I'm happy to provide this service for those who struggle to post up pics or those who would rather not sign up with a photo hosting site. Please remember to provide a link to your sales thread when you PM me. I will provide you with an email address so you can attach your pics to an email and send them on to me. Only send photos you have taken yourself please, I will not post up commercial shots of equipment for legal reasons. Most importantly, don't forget to inform me when your item has sold, again providing a link to your thread, so that I can delete your photos from my PhotoBucket account otherwise they just sit there taking up space... Thanks :)

Seems like I could be on my own here

With most of the kit for sale you can get pics anywhere
So, for example I want to sell my Naim 82. It looks like any Naim 82
My pictures will almost certainly be worse than the ones you can easily see on the interweb

Marco
11-11-2013, 09:55
...but it won't show any light scratches or scrapes/scuffs, which your kit *may* have, compared with someone else's same Naim equipment, pictured on the Web, or vice versa.

Some people (count me in) are fussy about that, and in knowing that what they're looking at a picture of is *identical* to what they've bought, and will be getting, when it arrives.

Marco.

so put both up..web shot and your own...No one in their right mind is going to buy multi hundred/thousand pounds worth of kit without seeing the item...pictures sell your items... Learn how to do it...it's not rocket science..

+1 :)

I want to see the item I am buying rather than a stock photo, plus I would prefer it if there are several views of the item concerned covering as many angles as possible. For me this is most important re: speakers as a multitude of sins can be hidden from view. It's not a matter of mistrust per se as members selling their items on AoS generally supply excellent descriptions of any flaws if present, but one mans minor blemish might be a deal breaker for another ;)

I sort of got that when I was taking pics of my PPP.

I definitely have it now

I don't agree, Mike. You need to show your own photos and they need to be obviously yours. Don't use stock photos, it arouses instant suspicions.

The Grand Wazoo

It's very simple - if you want to sell something for the best price, as quickly as possible, then provide as much information about what you are selling as you can - including stating what might seem to be the bleedin' obvious! Don't assume everyone knows what you are selling - don't assume any prior knowledge whatsoever. That way it's clear to every single person who reads it. Some folks buy stuff they never knew they needed until tempted with it!

Photos from every angle, quotes from reviewers that people will trust, specs.....every little helps.
Giving links to stuff elsewhere is a distraction - people want to see it all there in front of them without having to go poking around the internet. Links should only be there in support of what the advert says.

It should be obvious (as well as a matter of ethical integrity), that the description of all items for sale and their accompanying photographs, placed on AoS should be as honest and as accurate as possible. AoS members are not fools and ought not be distracted by 'estate agent' descriptions - leave that for the suckers on eBay.

I couldn't agree more:).

However, I have tried following the instructions for embedding images and on every occasion, its been a great big fail.:steam:. I know I'm doing something wrong, I just can't figure what it is. My comment about Flickr was really about the recent redesign of the layout and access - its rubbish now but all my stuff is there and I can't face moving it elsewhere. This new and improved stuff makes me mad. My MacPro arrived yesterday and once all was transferred (a doddle of course:eyebrows:) I opened iTunes..........oh bugger they've new and improved that as well:(

Can't remember any kit I was interested in having any blemishes.
Perhaps I'm too naive to expect all kit would be in close to perfect condition or at least as stated

The thing to remember about Flickr is you don't want all the embed code. When you copy it you get, for instance, this:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/martinwtaylor/10427215903/" title="ASC Picture Panel by martinwtaylor, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2867/10427215903_b578959aec_b.jpg" width="1024" height="684" alt="ASC Picture Panel"></a>

All you need is this bit (igmore the leading apostrophe to stop vBulletin from linking it):

Put it inside IMG tags and you're done!

Thanks Martin
Makes it so easy having a "how to" spiel and I assume this applies at least roughly to images brought in from other places.
I often lose the will with so much of this tech
I found Flickr to be slow and clunky, not used it for a long time

Gordon Steadman

The problem seems to be what I get as a link. When my photostream comes up, if I right click on a pic, I am only offered 'copy link' that makes sense. If i open the pic itself, I get no options when right clicking!!

I know its not a Mac thing as Al amongst others manages perfectly well - this means its me!!

MartinT
12-11-2013, 09:57
Gordon - you open an image and click on the box with an arrow coming out of it. Then select embed code and it gives you the code to copy with Ctrl-C.

EDIT: Ah, I've just seen that you were right-clicking. That's not going to work in Flickr, you definitely need to ask it to give you the embed code. Do that, use my post above to extract just the bit you need, and you're laughing!

Photobucket makes it really easy, all you need to do is once the image is uploaded is pick from a list of four types of link.

'Image' being one of them, as soon as you've clicked on the text, it auto-copies it, so then all you need to do is paste it in the text box heres a Pete's your auntie, easy!

Hi Alan

They are room treatment panels, disguised as pictures. I have used two suppliers for my nice panels:
ASC (Acoustic Sciences Corp) in the USA - PicturePanels (http://www.acousticsciences.com/picturepanel)
GIK in the UK - ArtPanels (http://gikacoustics.co.uk/product/gik-artpanel-acoustic-panels/)

Both highly recommended, GIK are cheaper and no import duty.
