Whats your oldest item of hifi still in regular use ?

Just curious

Weel.... I've got valves from the 1940s inside my amps, the first stereo cartridge from 1958 (Shure M3D). Plus the design of my Ortofon SPU dates from 1959, and I have loudspeakers from 1967, as well as a CD player from 1987.

Tricky as I'm not sure how old my Rogers LS4a's are. I think they were current from about 1984 to 1989 or so but I can't be sure.

Still, I think my Kenwood KR950B receiver hails from 1982 or 1983 so that would be older in any case.

Not sure its 'hi fi' but we still use a Ferguson 3324 radiogram in our den. Unsure of the exact age but its definitely pre 1970. Radio is fine but we only play 78s on it. Bass extension and soundstage are a tad limited :eyebrows:

Scott 350B tuner from 1962/3. One of the first multiplexing stereo designs. Glorious sound - coloured, but glorious.

Either RCA 211 tubes date stamped 1942 or Amperex 211s from the 50s. Usually the Amperex's TBH. Rarely some GEs.

My ADC 10E Mk.II cartridge dates back to the late sixties. Still working perfectly and sounding remarkable.

Next My 1978 Tannoys I suppose, and my VTL Deluxe pre-amp and Meridian 206 are knocking on a bit.

Oh and I forgot my Pioneer PL-61 TT from around 1968.

Speakers - Tannoy 15" MG's circa 1968
Cartridge - G800 - circa 1969 to mid 70's I think.

1980's - 90's:
CD player Teac P-700 + Dac D-700 - circa 1989 to 1994
Pre-amp - late 90's early 2000's

2000's:
Amp - 2008 but being upgraded by a very nice chap in the Valleys - 2013

hmm, i guess the oldest item would be my LP12 but I don't regularly use that so next up would probably be my CD player a 1992 (21 years scary!) Naim CDI.

Hi Joe,

I totally agree, whilst I predominantly use my Squeezebox / Caiman combo these days, the CDI is still such a nice and easy to listen to player… for decent Hifi sessions I always use the CDI :)

Come to think of it my next oldest Hifi item is my recently acquired Mission Cyrus I Mk II integrated amplifer which I purchased from Datawireless a few months ago and it is going as strong as ever :)

I have a bsr pa amp from 1932, for dance halls, 4 watts from a pp3/250 valve
Also i have a early permanent magnet speaker from 1934 that looks surprisingly modern,
Most of the valves i use daily are from the early 30's

Wouldn't mind to see a pic of the amp and the valves. :)

I can only agree.. The CDI was one of my all time fave cdp's... I liked the sound much better than the MF X-Ray for example and the Naim CD3.5. The CDI is ripe for some tweak-a-roonie's too :)

Yeah I have heard that, but to be honest I am not sure it needs to be tweaked, its such a good machine stock!

If it aint broke... :)

I think the recommended tweaks are on the power side only. The TDA1541S1 dac is sublime so nothing to do there.

In regular use at home, Leak Streofetic from the 70s and the MGs in the Lockwoods are early 70s too. In the edit suite I have been using a pair of Spendor BC1s for vocal balancing.

Another Leak - must be a government issue.

The Stereo 20 date stamp says 1961. I'm not sure what age the ESLs are but getting on a bit too no doubt.

My ears are 66 years old.

I think that this one dates from 1908.

Very moving, listening to cylinders and 78's recorded by people long gone now...

I currently have the Quad II's from 1962, Garrard auto decks from a similar period, 1972 Beogram 3000/SP12, the Crowns and Spendors from around 1974 and many cartridges (Shure and ADC) from the early 70's - oh, and late 60's Wharfedale Denton W20's :)

As a fan of 'chunky' cartridges, Chris, I just LURVE the look of that fat-assed bad boy!! One day, however, I'd like you to describe (in relative detail) the difference in sound/musical presentation between your 'Vinyl 1' and 'Vinyl 2' set-ups.... Although I suspect that I can guess which I'd prefer ;)

I also have another 301 plus Decca FFSS, Quad 22, Quad AM2 and pair of Quad IIs in a walnut cabinet that pre-dates this but it's been in storage for a while and 'not in regular use' so not sure if it counts!

Quite the contrary Justin , especially when the amplifiers damping factor ( which can be raised to infinity ) is fine tuned to ones speaker of choice , whilst utilizing mil spec 7581A OPV's and American NOS 6SN7/6SL7's .

In occasional use:

Radford STA 15 III valve power amplifier (mid '60s)

Ferrograph 632 reel-reel tape machine (mid '60s)

Nagra IV-s reel-reel tape machine (mid to late '60s)

Decca ffss Super pick-up arm (mid '60s)

SME 3012 Mk. II pick-up arm (mid '60s)

Various cartridges: ADC 25, ADC 10E Mk.II (late '60s), AKG P8ES (late '70s), EMT XSD and TSD (mid '70s), various Decca designs (mid '70s) as well as the Ortofon SPU (whose design goes back to 1956) and SL15E (Mk. I and Mk.II) (so around the mid to late '60s)

EMT 930st record deck (from the serial number, mine dates from 1966, though the design goes back to ~ 1960) and two more Thorens TD124/II turntables (so again mid '60s).

No longer used, but kept as an objet d'art, a Quad AM1 AM tuner (late '50s).

My oldest will be my Sony TTS8000 with Technics EPA100 arm ( '78 or something like that?) BUT they're not really in the system yet..

A pair of Harbeth HL Monitors.

They may be one of the earliest pairs still working, as the Serial Numbers are 228 A & B. The cabinets are in excellent condition.

I've had my td 124mkii, Ortofon SPU, Audio Technica 1503mkiii arm and Allison 3 speakers for over 30 years, still sounding great, although the SPU needs re-tipping again.
Lots of you still using old kit and still getting pleasure from it, many a good tune.......eh!

As a reward for acting as an executor for my parents-in-law, my wife who was the main beneficiary of their wills gave me a 1930s HMV oak cased gramophone (model 103) which they had left her and a considerable number of old 78s. This was on the basis that I liked "old sh*t". I still own it, and have played it, but have promised it to a friend in Texas who collects these things. Does that count:)?

My Spendor SP2/1 speakers. They were built at the end of the 80's when Spendor still made great speakers. I remember how transparent sounding they were especially with valves. I still use them today and although they dont sound like a modern "audiophile" speaker they still have the ability to sound magical with the right acoustic material.

No. I bought a G99,SME 3009 and V15 fitted to a Howland West plinth back in 1965/66 and used that for some years. I then took a fancy to the Transcriptor Reference Hydraulic and gave the G99/SME/V15 to my Brother who lovingly tended it for a number of years until he went digital with a Teac all-in-one. So, I got the G99/SME/V15 back around 8 years ago and it has resided in my 'museum' since then.

The one you sold me is still waiting for a refurb and the SME arm is currently residing on a TD124.

I'm so glad I kept this and I do regret selling so much of my well loved gear from the past. I have replaced most of it with E-Bay purchases but it hasn't quite got the sentimental attachment. Still nice to have though.

I've been a 'hoarder' for years! Eight arms, a dozen or so cartridges, four decks, seven tuners, two CD players, two cassette players, two reel-reel tape machines, seven preamps, eight power amps, - but only two pairs of speakers!

i don't know what's older here - garrard 301 or ortofon SL15. both playing wonderfully, not surprising for the deck but i don't get how a 50 years old pickup can sound so glorious. it seems they don't make them like that anymore...

Inclined to agree - I still have a couple of Ortofon SL15Es, one of which is at least 40 years old.

Nothing i'm using is REALLY old but I guess my Klipsch Heresys date from the 80's and their original design goes back the the late 1950's. My Pioneer DVD 717 is from the 90's. The Audio Note Oto goes back to the 90's too. The only things i have up-to-date are the cables

Nothing really old but I doubt i could better it with todays offerings without spending a small fortune.... so i'm happy... :thumbsup:

I say an old Voight horn speaker a few years ago in the corner of a basement ballroom (in Fulwood, Sheffield - expensive side of town!). The owners of the house didnt even know what it was. I would have loved to get that working for them.

I have a pair of Quad II amplifiers in regular use. The older of the two was bought by a family member in the late 1950's from Shorts of London for the grand price of £27 17/6d !

I bought a second Quad II second-hand in 1974 to make a stereo pair at a cost of £21.00. From the serial number I suspect it was built in the late 1960's.

I wonder what Peter Walker had any idea that these things would be changing hands for £1,000 plus for a pair on the Devil's own internet auction site sixty years after he designed them?

I still use on old '70s amp in the workshop, wait for it, an

ALBANY HOUSE AM-108. Never heard of it? That's probably a good thing, but I'm going to subject you all to the pictures.

Acquired from a work colleague (he gave it to me) about 10 years ago. It had a couple of faults, a blown output transistor and an open circuit resistor in the preamp section.
It has a 4ch/2ch switch but I have removed the quasi 4 channel Din speaker sockets and put some 4mm binding posts on the back.

It even does MM :eyebrows:

just replaced my pioneer a400 with a nad 3120 c1980ish.
never heard anything nadish before and was much impressed with the above....totally different to the pioneer.
I guess some would think the swap a step back but my modest system now sounds more balanced.
the nad cost me 40 quid and has a button missing....anyone got a spare, nowt on fleabay!!!

p.s. the a400 is on sale....on the very forum.
