Speaker level

Lots of speakers come with adjustable spikes, my question is does it really matter if they're not level, does it affect their performance?

Mine look like they'd be a real pita to adjust but would if its a huge faux pas not to have them level.

I spent an age leveling my speakers and nearly threw them out the window in the process. I wanted to avoid any unwanted vibrations that may affect preformance.

Now they are nice, level and rock steady...:)

I don't suppose it matters if they are a few mm out as long as they dont rock about.

Depends on the speaker i am using, my Duevel, Chario and KEF i have level. The AE i have the spikes higher at the front, so slight slope. Same with my Musical Technology speakers. Dave hit the nail on the head with making sure they don't rock about.

Yes level first so they don't rock about with a couple of coins under the front spikes to give them the tiniest bit of tilt.

Dunno why but it works for me.

Yes precisely, if I put my hand on top of them there is no wobble.

Hi Martin,

I have found my Epos to sound quite different if they are not level and I mean within a few millimetres, not sure whether is to do with them being stand mounts... but come to think of it my previous speakers (Linn Nexus) never sufferred the same problem and they stand mounts too :scratch:

I could always tell if my missus had moved my ES14's even a few mills very sensitive to level and position I found .once you get them in the right spot wowee they are magical, so much more than the sum of their parts great speakers

Agreed Paul, I have them pointing out straight as an alternative to toed in like some people recommend and find that made soooo much difference to their overall presentation too.

Maybe it's because they are such great speakers, maybe that makes them more sensitive, I don't know!

my spikes are adustable and the speakers are eye level although i have not taken a bulb to them....probably helps that the floor is concrete and fairly level in its self.

How does one make sure one's head is in the right place each time we listen to our system? Does head positioning have to be within a couple of mills too?

Oh yeah! It's like hanging a picture isn't it? The content doesn't really change if the frame is a bit off kilter but it's distracting enough to upset your enjoyment.

I also think that one still needs to take in to account the basic engineering principals and make sure the speakers are securely and stably mounted, as any wobbles etc will hamper the energy transfer in to the air from the driver. Also worth considering (and perhaps experimenting with) coupling vs decoupling and at what stage of the speaker/stand/room component you do either.

I always position speakers in relation to the room their in not my head .
