Very, very nice, I like Akai tape stuff used them at different times for location recordings and even in a couple of studios. Such is my love of analogue tape I still always have an old Ferrograph degaussing tool, an edit block an razor blade in my tool kit. Canford Audio still do quality splicing tape, thank god! Enjoy your new kit. :)

Now the Ferrograph I'm jealous of ;) About a thousand years ago (well it seem like it) I recorded a demo for Alex Raeburn the then 16 year old daughter of Christopher Raeburn the Decca classical producer, (at the time he was head of opera for Decca). His second wife was a concert pianist and they had the most exquisite music room in the house in Hampstead. I recorded Alex singing "Suicide is painless" the theme from the film MASH. She sang it while accompanying herself on acoustic guitar. I had all sorts of clever ideas about how to do it and in the end decided KISS and used a coincident paid of JVC m-510 electret condensers straight into the Series Seven, then moved the mics back till I got the natural reverb of the room. It was a great recording, really sweet sound, I still play it today on occasion. She got a part in a revival of the musical Hair that was being done in Germany if I recall correctly. Is yours the 15ips version?

I've got an identical one! Sounds great.... only reel (sic) problem is the way they used pressure pads to keep the tape against the heads!
My Revox/Studer PR99 (last version whichever Mk that was) beats it though....

Al,
Try thourough cleaning of the whole tape path and de guasing the tape heads & Guides could get rid of your Hiss
If not then check tape head alignment and calibrtaion, you will need an MRL reference tape and a tone generator or set of test tones for that though.

Yes, the P99 is a much better machine than the A77 or B77, though any true Studer model (such as the B62) will beat it.

Indeed an earlier Series 7 I had fell foul of the sticky idlers... as did a NEAL cassette deck!

I believe the PR99 was sold under both the Revox and Studer brand names at different times and shares much of the B77's innards.... A actually have a Studer B62 as well but prefer the PR99!
